1. Culture Culture us a way of life. It is
the context within which
we exist, think, feel, and
relate to others. It is a
“glue” that binds a group
of people.
Culture holds a huge
to its people, this a group of
individual with specific ideas,
beliefs, and traditions. An
individual needs to know about
cultural differences, a specific
culture is different from the other.
An individual may view a culture
base on the culture she grew up
with, if a Filipina encounter an
American, she may notice the act
of being liberate but in American
culture being liberated is normal.
Awareness of cultural differences
is an essential attitude towards
second language acquisition, we
must have an open mind,
atmosphere of respect and
acceptance to achieve a better
environment to acquire and learn
the second language.

Different colors represents the cultural
differences. Raising arms, means
celebrating. The globe, means to the
world itself.
Different people from different culture
celebrating differences instead of
comparing and having competition
with regards to uniqueness.

2. Cultural Stereotypes As cultural milieu
shapes our world
view – in such way
that reality is
to be objectively
perceived through
our own cultural
pattern, and a
differing perception
is seen as false or
“strange” and is thus
oversimplified. A
close-minded view
such differences
often results in the
maintenance of
stereotype – an
oversimplification
and blanket
assumption.
As I have said, cultures are different from each other,
but failing to have an open mind, not accepting and
respecting those differences will lead to cultural
stereotypes. Each culture has uniqueness which obviously
makes them different from the other. For me, cultural
stereotypes and hasty generalization holds the same
meaning, generalizing a culture may it be with superiority
biased decision, and enough or sufficient critical thinking is
not present. Upon watching American series, I often notice
that an American girl and a Filipina with the same age is
different from one another, because they are from different
culture. In American movies or series, it is noticeable that
American is more free, independent, and liberated than
Filipinos, we have this inborn value of being conservative.
From those movies or encounters, we believe or
each other, all Filipinas are conservative and all Americans
are liberated, but what if a man met an American woman
whose conservative, he absorb the known generalization
and being so direct and clingy, that move may surprise or
offend the American woman. Therefore, aside from having
an open mind, pure acceptance, and respect, we should
careful or sensitive enough when dealing with other
from different culture.

not mean they are all the same.

3. Attitudes Like all aspects of the
development of
cognition and affect in
human beings, develop
early in childhood and
are the result of parents’
and peers’ attitudes, of
contact with people
are “different” in any
number of ways and of
interacting affective
factors in the human
experience.
For me, attitude is the reaction, response,
answers the question ‘how do we handle
things?’. Attitude can be change, enhance, and
improve, it also affects our motivation and
willingness to learn. As a college student, future
language teacher, I consider building and
enhancing my attitude towards improving or
progressing in this course as a main goal,
because motivation is the foundation towards
improvement, and having positive attitude and
clearer vision are considered ‘must have’ for a
student like me. Upon studying this course, I
have encountered a lot of good and bad times,
sometimes I am so eager to learn and do
but there are also times, that my motivation
deflated and I just want to stay put, settle for
less, and not progress at all. But I have realized,
especially in this time of pandemic, positive
attitude towards learning is a huge push to do
better and work hard even circumstances
not cooperate, we must face forward, push
yourself to try harder, and think that all the hard
work will pay off eventually.

4. Acculturation Acquisition or
creation of a new
identity is at the
heart of culture
learning.
Personally, I view acculturation as flexibility, being
able to learn and adapt another culture is a skill in which
you are dividing yourself, creating partitions to widen a
perception and learn deeper. Upon reading the chapter, I
remember a Filipino series, On the Wings of Love, it is
about a Filipina who have an American dream, she
to pursue her mother’s dream in San Francisco, U.S. A.
stages of acculturation are shown in the series, at first, she
is excited and happy, full of motivation and
encouragement. Then, one time, she is alone and
misses the Philippines and her father, the homesickness
kicked in. The stage three appeared when fellow Filipinos
help her to adjust and have a better way of living in the
states, little by little she recovered, she realized that she
must adapt with the changes, then eventually she got
to it, she improved and work hard than usual, means she
absorb and accept the other culture, she accepts that the
culture in the Philippines from the American culture. Like in
studying or learning a second language as you learn and
deal with their language at some point you will eventually
learn their culture, through adjustments and willingness to
learn, as the motivation increase, mastery of the second
language will increase too. As we learn the second
language, we must never neglect our native language, as
much as possible improve and promote them both.

5. Social distance Social distance refers to
the cognitive and affective
proximity of two cultures
that come into contact
within an individual.
I found it easy to
understand, it is about
creating boundaries between
the two cultures, the native
and target language culture. I
think it is essential, building
enough distance between
cultures would benefit the
second language learning, it
will help us to distinguish or
identify the differences that
will lead us in absorbing the
second language better
because you knew the
distinction between the two.

6. World Englishes Status of English in its
varieties.
It is known fact that English is
considered the international language of
communication. Personally, I consider
English as powerful language, mastering
this language will open doors for a lot of
jobs, I chose English as my major because
holds a lot of opportunities in which being
the international language is a huge factor.
There are a lot of places you can go
having trouble of communication,
you are, you will encounter a person who
know how to speak in English. You can
blend and adjust easily if you know how to
speak in English, you just need to know the
basics then you can communicate with
others just fine.

7. Language
Imperialism
Linguistic Imperialism or
“linguicism,” calls
attention to the potential
consequences of English
teaching worldwide
Eurocentric ideologies
are embedded in
instruction, having the
effect of legitimizing
colonial or establishment
power and resources,
and of reconstituting
“cultural inequalities
between English and
other languages”.
Before, when I was in Junior High
School, I always admire my teachers and
classmates who can speak in English fluently
because at that time I am having difficulties
in speaking in English, I am not fluent, slow
speaker, and not confident. I considered
English language as ideal, I always thought
that it would cool if I get to speak fluently as
well, I want to master it, to the point that I
feel inferiority towards my mother tongue,
which is not good at all, but as I grew older, I
realized that I my mother tongue, Tagalog is
an elegant language as well and I
that I enjoy writing poems in Tagalog.

8. Language Rights Endorsed the right of
all people to develop
and promote their
own languages and
offer children access
to education in their
own languages.
It is good to know that
people are willing to protect the
indigenous languages and willing
to promote and enhance these
treasures. In elementary level, it
great that teachers are teaching
the subject matter base on the
student’s first language or
tongue, I think it is a hard
adjustment but worth it, the
pupils get to know more about
their mother tongue.
