Introduction of Client
The growing coffee retail industry makes an average of $28 billion dollars in annual
revenue and consists of nearly 200,000 different businesses. One of these businesses, Scooter’s
Coffee, started two decades ago and is quickly growing in popularity (Pilon).
Scooter’s Coffee was founded in 1998 by Don and Linda Eckles in Bellevue, Nebraska.
The company is Midwest-based and specializes in espresso drinks and homemade pastries
(Scooter’s Coffee Honored). The overall goal for Scooter’s Coffee is to create high quality
products and serve its products as quick as possible while maintaining good customer service. ts
motto is “Amazing, People, Amazing Drinks...Amazingly Fast!” With 167 stores open in the
United States and 144 franchisee commitments to build new stores, Scooter’s Coffee is one of
the fastest-growing private companies in the nation (Scooter’s Coffee Facts).
Scooter’s Coffee is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, and is ranked as the fourth-best
coffee franchise on the Entrepreneur Magazine Top Food-Based Franchises list. It was ranked
based on its growth as a company, financial strength, and how well it satisfies customers. As the
years continue, Scooter’s Coffee hopes to continue being recognized for its hard work and
dedication to further grow the brand (Scooter’s Coffee...Top Food Franchises).
This campaign strategy plan is aimed for the Scooter’s location in Maryville, Missouri.
Scooter’s opened a store in Maryville on April 7, 2017. This building is located at 1305 South
Main Street and has a drive-thru as well as an indoor seating area (Scooter’s ..Maryville).

Campaign Goal
The campaign goal for our group is to
use social media to boost sales of Scooters
breakfast food to target it toward the college
audience. The more the audience is aware of this
food, the more likely people will pick Scooters
when considering purchasing breakfast.
Existing Content
Scooters current media content includes Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and
Linkedin. When looking at its content, Scooter’s provides consumers with up to date information
and engages with users in unique ways. Scooters top social media site is Facebook, but all of its
remaining social media platforms still have high traffic and each engage consumers in a variety
of ways.
When looking at Scooter’s Facebook, it
provides viewers with up to date information
on recent deals and/or news, along with
upcoming events. On Facebook the business
has over 100,000 people who like the page or
follow it.
2
Scooters’ Instagram has a variety of photos
featuring its products. The posts are
aesthetically pleasing and create variety for
viewers. As seen to the right, the business
uses Instagram trends including the video
feature. However, Scooters only has 13,000
followers which is a smaller following
compared to other mediums.
Scooters uses Twitter as well to reach its intended
target audience. Scooters has over 7,000 tweets and
over 11,000 followers. The screenshot to the left
shows its cover photo as a new product. This is a
good indication that Scooters helps keep consumers
engaged and up to date on recent products.
Pinterest is another form of social media that Scooters has. Although Scooters does not have
many items here, it is still a good medium to manipulate. Scooters boards cover topics relating to
its offerings which is a good way to reach as many people as possible.
3
Scooters also engages with consumers via
LinkedIn. It has over 4,000 followers.
Scooters provides readers with plenty of
information on its business by providing
them with external links. Scooters’
LinkedIn showcases its employees as well
by providing a list of them on the top right
of the page. LinkedIn is a great tool for
Scooters to use because potentially
anyone can become an owner of a
Scooter's. This is a great place to seek out
those who are looking to start their own
businesses.
Content Gaps
Scooters’ social media content does have some gaps, meaning that the some content on its social
media is weak. On social media, Scooter’s doesn't focus on breakfast food, or any food in
general. Its social media sites are also for the company as a whole, and none are targeted for
people’s local businesses. These gaps helped us target the direction in which to go with our
campaign. If breakfast foods were promoted on its social media sites, people would be aware of
these products and be more likely to purchase them. Our group also wants to use social media to
the company's advantage to boost sales in breakfast foods by targeting the college aged audience.
4
Competitors
Scooters has many competitors such as Starbucks, Einstein Bros Bagels, McDonalds, and
Hy-vee. Starbucks is a well-known coffee shop that has 37.32 million likes on Facebook (Huff).
Since Starbucks is targeting the same audience that we are for our Scooters Campaign, it is a
huge competitor. There are many Starbucks conveniently located on college campuses. This can
make it hard for Scooters to be recognized for its breakfast foods when students can just stay on
campus and have coffee and breakfast.
Einstein Bros Bagels, like Starbucks, is a competitor with Scooters because it targets the
college aged audience as well. Einsteins are also located on many campuses, and even airports.
These easy to access locations help people choose between Einstein and Scooters. The more that
people choose other convenient coffee and breakfast shops, the less they will think to choose
Scooters. This is why it is important that we focus a strong social media campaign targeting
breakfast food toward college students.
While McDonald's has taken a lot of heat in the past about its food not being healthy, it is
still a huge competitor in breakfast food. People are more likely to choose McDonalds because it
is familiar, cheap, and has a long historical background in the breakfast industry.
Core Strategy
Scooters needs to work on promoting its breakfast foods through social mediums in order
to increase sales. The core strategy of this campaign plan is to increase Scooter’s breakfast sales
by using an intellectual approach. By using this approach, the audience will know that breakfast
is necessary and hopefully, they will fill that need with Scooter’s breakfast food.
5
Themes and Messages
In order to increase breakfast sales and draw college students to the Maryville Scooter’s,
the business should focus on the following themes, which reflect why people need breakfast:
● Physical Health- Being healthy throughout life can be hard, especially with the hectic,
busy schedules of many. Skipping breakfast is not healthy; it helps energize the body at
the beginning of the day. Telling consumers that Scooter’s is a fast, easy, and healthy
option for breakfast will help get them in the door.
● Emotional Well-Being- Mornings are hard for many people. Getting up for work, having
last minute tasks to do, or just the stress of life can become overwhelming. Tell the
audience that breakfast is known to improve one’s mood and that meeting with friends
over breakfast can benefit their emotional well-being.
● Mental Benefits- Since this campaign is targeted at college-aged students, it is important
to recognize how eating breakfast can help one mentally. College students are often
studying or reading to prepare for exams. Let the audience know that eating breakfast can
benefit them personally.
Content Plan
This campaign will be focused on Scooter’s breakfast food and how it can benefit people
physically, emotionally, and mentally. The business will remind the consumers of their products
and how their lives can be positively impacted by including Scooter’s breakfast food in their
morning routine.

Sample Content
Below are the blog posts and sample social media posts for this campaign strategy plan.
The first three blog posts focus on Scooter’s breakfast items and how these items benefit the
overall physical health of a person.

Blog Post 1: 6 Ways Breakfast Improves Your Mood
Feeling down in the dumps? Look no further! Here are 6 surprising, but interesting ways
breakfast can improve your mood throughout the day.
1. Makes you feel energized- To be honest, mornings are hard! It is so easy to forget
about breakfast and rush off to school or work. But, as the day goes on, your
hunger will increase and your mood will worsen. Having breakfast filled with
protein, such as a Scooter’s breakfast sandwich, boosts your energy and makes
you feel ready for the day ahead.
2. Helps you feel full for longer- Many people think that skipping breakfast will help
them lose weight since they are missing a meal full of fat and calories. However, if
one skips breakfast, it is more likely that they will fill that hunger later with
unhealthy options (City News). Including protein and carbohydrates at the
beginning of the day will help you feel full for longer, and you will be able to avoid
unhealthy temptations later in the day.
3. It may restore your memory- Having to solve problems, whether it be at work or
school, can be difficult on an empty stomach. When I am hungry, it is easy to just
think about food constantly and not the task at hand. A common breakfast food,
berries, are full of anthocyanins, which can help boost your memory (Eat Right).
4. You feel less anxious and more calm-When I am feeling hungry, I begin tapping my
fingers on a desk or moving my heel up and down against the ground. If I do not
know when my next meal is coming, it makes me anxious and even more hungry.
Having a full stomach helps one feel calm and satisfied.
5. It helps you concentrate-It is known that people want more of what they cannot
have, also described as the principle of scarcity. Wanting and desiring food when it
is not available makes one want it even more. So, on an empty stomach, it is easy
to only think about food. But, if you eat breakfast at the start of the day, you will
tend to think about food less.
7
6. Makes you feel comfortable- Comfort foods are my favorite type of food. They
make you feel happy and satisfied on the inside. Having breakfast at the beginning
of the day makes you comfortable not only physically, but emotionally. Feeling
happy is important, especially at the beginning of the day. Multiple comfort foods
are offered at Scooter’s.

Blog Post 2: 4 Reasons to Meet Up for Breakfast
Having a routine and sticking to that routine can get boring and tiresome. Mix up
one of your mornings by meeting with a friend. You would be surprised to find the
numerous emotional benefits that come from sharing a meal with a friend. Trust me
when I say, you NEED an excuse to get out of the house.
1. Good conversation leads to a good day- Many mornings can be antisocial and
boring. It is easy to grab a quick snack and rush out the door. But, how much more
beneficial would it be to meet up with someone and share breakfast? According to
Greatest, being connected socially over a meal is shown to increase happiness
and help alleviate depression (Stay Happy and Healthy). Having this happiness at
the beginning of the day will impact the rest of the day positively.
2. Creates variety in your schedule- Being able to look forward to something is a
great feeling to have. Knowing that an irregular event is coming up creates a sense
of excitement and wonder in a person. Meeting up for breakfast creates a change
8
in your schedule and allows you to look forward to something you would not
normally do.
3. Less distractions- At home, many distractions can be present to hinder you from
fully enjoying breakfast. For college students, this could be schoolwork or
television. Having breakfast outside of your home creates an environment with
less distractions, allowing more quality time to be spent with the person across
from you.
4. It’s cheaper than lunch or dinner- Many people avoid eating out because it can be
more expensive than making a meal at home. However, breakfast can be cheaper
than most meals of the day. For example, Scooter’s has multiple breakfast items
that will not break the bank.

Blog Post 3: Scooters: Four foods that make healthy eating easy!
1. Bacon & Egg Breakfast Sandwich- Try this delicious sandwich that combines the
favorite breakfast items of bacon and eggs. Topped with gouda cheese and served
on a soft, hot ciabatta bun that melts in your mouth. Your taste buds will thank you
later.
2. Southwest Burrito- Fluffy eggs, potato, cheese, chorizo, black beans, corn and
tomatoes all combine in this wild combination! Who knew all these ingredients
would add up to be less than 350 calories? Yee-Haw!
3. Cranberry Orange Scone- Satisfy your sweet side with this cranberry filled scone,
topped with a tangy orange glaze. This unusual combination is surprisingly
scrumptious (and healthy too)!
4. Oatmeal- Savory, sweet, and an added crunch make this combination complete.
Our maple and brown sugar-flavored wholegrain rolled oats combine with dried
fruit and nuts to create a concoction you won’t forget. Start your day off right with
this healthy, energy-boosting breakfast.

Blog Post 1: Scientifically Proven: Breakfast is one of the most important meals!
Everyone needs good advice, so Scooters good advice of the day is, don't scoot by
breakfast! Why you ask? Because, it is scientifically proven that breakfast is one of the
most important meals of the day. Breakfast is good for mind, body, and spirit. Breakfast
is great for people of all ages, college students, older adults, and even babies. By having a
good breakfast your body's metabolism is jump started and more calories are burned
throughout the day. "Studies have found that although people who skip breakfast eat
slightly fewer calories during the day, they tend to have higher body mass index, or BMI,"
10
says Christy C. Tangney, PhD, a clinical dietitian at Rush University Medical Center
(Science Behind Breakfast). Some great breakfast choices to get your mind and body
pumping for the day are Scooter’s breakfast burritos, low calorie scones, or oatmeal that
is topped with berries and nuts. Don’t scoot by breakfast- hurry into your local Scooter’s
today!

Blog Post 3: How to Beat Mental Breakfast Excuses With Scooter’s
Beat those mental breakfast fasting excuses. Here at Scooters we get down to the core
of the problem. We are here to answer the question of “why are people not eating
12
breakfast as much as they should?”. Our team is familiar with the three most common
excuses provided by others(Breakfast Excuses). Now our team has solved them.

NO TIME: One of the most heard of excuses are people saying they are so busy in the
morning they don't have time to eat. To beat this excuse come on over to Scooter’s and
grab a quick and easy breakfast. Planning to come to Scooter’s the night before will take
away from some of the time of deciding what you are going to do for breakfast.

YOU'RE NOT HUNGRY: People complain that when they wake up they just aren't ready to
eat straight off the bat. To beat this excuse, start with lighter breakfast, such as a
blueberry muffin from Scooter’s, until your stomach gets use to the idea of eating in the
morning.

YOU'RE TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT: No one said that breakfast had to be all bad calories.
Try a delicious calorie conscious breakfast sandwich from Scooter’s, packed with the
right proteins and energies to jump start your day!

Hopefully these Scooter tips will help you start your day with some healthy breakfast!

Blog Post 1: Why You Should Wait to Eat Breakfast Until After You Workout
When it comes to working out, some may stay away from eating breakfast simply
because they feel it will make them cramp or they perform better on an empty stomach.
While some of those may be reliable, there is an easy fix to your thoughts. Everyone
should eat breakfast, whether that's because of working out or wanting to live a healthy
lifestyle; but, some may not know the benefits of eating breakfast after you workout. This
seems like common sense, but many will go straight to lunch or grab a snack instead of
eating breakfast. Your body still needs to recover after a workout and if you’re not giving
your body the proper nutrients, you can't expect your body to recover properly.
A study was done comparing two groups, one group eating breakfast before their
workout and the other eating after. The study found that the group that ate breakfast
before packed on more weight than the other (NY Times). This was because the group
that ate before exercising no longer responded well to insulin and weren’t pulling
sugar/glucose out of the bloodstream efficiently. Instead, they had begun storing extra
fat within and between muscle cells. The group who ate after exercise had almost no
weight gain and showed no signs of insulin resistance. They also burned the fat they were
taking in more efficiently since your body needs to recover it grabs hold of your food
intake instantly(NY Times). In conclusion, this study can now help those morning
exercisers sleep in just a little longer instead of worrying about getting that breakfast in
before your workout.

Blog Post 3: Lose Weight, Eat breakfast at Scooter’s!
At Scooters we want to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. This is why we offer more
than 6 healthy breakfast options under 400 calories. Breakfast is a key ingredient to
living a healthy lifestyle. Many people will skip over this important meal because of the
added on calories it can cause through your day, but by mid morning people are starving.
Here’s 3 reasons why your body needs breakfast.
1) It fuels your body: Breakfast not only begins your day of eating, but it starts your
metabolism. While you are sleeping you are fasting, so when you wake up you
must tell your body you're ready to start the day (Fit Day). Even adding a small
breakfast to your day will help kick start your metabolism and help you burn fat
faster.
2) It keeps you motivated: Your body needs to recover after your morning workout. If
you do not fuel it with proper nutrients you will not get past the first week of
exercising without feeling tired and unmotivated (Fit Day). Adding a good
nutrient-filled breakfast after you workout will keep you motivated through the
whole day. It will also give you the energy you need to replenish the energy you just
lost from working out. Who knows, it might even motivate you to ride your bike to
work or add in more activities in the day.
3) It provides a foundation: As discussed in point 1, you are fasting when you sleep.
Once you wake up it's both a new day and a new you, so in order to make use out
of your whole day, it is essential to add breakfast. Doing this will create a
foundation for the rest of the day. This foundation is key to living a healthy
lifestyle. If you choose to eat an unhealthy breakfast, you will start to create a habit
for the rest of the day(Fit Day). We already know fatty foods don't do a good job
keeping your body fueled and it will only leave you wanting more. Instead, choose
a healthy breakfast choice after your workouts in order to create a healthy
foundation for the rest of your day and life.
4) In conclusion, eating breakfast can help you start living a healthy lifestyle, but if
you want to begin to change your eating habits from bad to good, you should
choose healthier breakfast options to help kickstart your lifestyle change. So come
to Scooter’s, where we offer more than 6 breakfast options under 350 calories!

Facebook Post 2:
Measurement and Monitoring
If Scooter’s were to use this plan, it would need to measure the success of the goal at
hand: will Scooter’s sell more breakfast items? By talking about these breakfast items and the
intellectual benefits of breakfast on social media, we hope to see breakfast sales increase over
time. Keeping Scooter’s social media targeted toward our three themes (physical health,
emotional well-being, and mental benefits) will help gain the attention of our audience and
hopefully convince them to not scoot by breakfast by stopping in a local Scooter’s.The chart
below would compare breakfast sales and social media change over the course of four months.
Since our campaign used social media posts in Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, those are the
social media channels that would be tracked.

accounts, we would not know these exact numbers until the account was created.
The chart above can be used to track breakfast sales and reposts/retweets/shares over the
four months. We chose to do reposts/retweets/shares on the various social media channels
because we plan to have a giveaway which would feature a free breakfast sandwich for ten lucky
winners. Maryville Scooter’s would post on each social medium and say that if people follow
them and then repost/share/retweet that post, they would be entered in to win a free breakfast
sandwich. Hopefully, this giveaway would not only create more awareness of Scooter’s breakfast
food in the Maryville community, but it would increase breakfast sales over time. As time goes
on, hopefully the sales of breakfast food will increase because of this giveaway. Our group chose
to do our campaign during these months for specific reasons. First, according to NPR, a study
found that food intake tends to increase as the weather turns colder (Aubrey). In addition, we had
the campaign start early in the fall and end in December because of New Year’s. According to
WiseBread, many people make resolutions, such as saving money or wanting to cook within the
home, which results in them going out to eat less (Marcin). Lastly, since our target audience is
college students, more students would be active during these months as opposed to the summer
months.
18
We made another chart in addition to the one above in order to show when the sample
content we created would be posted. This chart will be for the first month of the campaign,
September.

In the table above, descriptions are given as to when a specific social media post should
be made known to the public. September is the time when the weather starts to cool and school
begins. Posting to social media at the start of the school year may attract new college students to
Scooter’s. In addition, posting about the mental, emotional, and physical benefits of a breakfast
at Scooter’s may help bring college freshman in who are stressed about their big life change.
There are less social media posts in the middle of the month because the first day of fall is at the
end of the month, and Scooter’s could use that to its advantage on social media. Specifically,
posting about the giveaway the day before Fall will hopefully attract people in to Scooter’s. Also
using the rest of our social media posts about the convenient, healthy options at Scooter’s will
bring college students in the door to embrace the start of Fall.
Customer Comments/Concerns
When dealing with customer comments and concerns on social media, the consumer’s
comments and questions should be answered as quick as possible. The response should only be
made with knowledgeable answers to the situation. Scooters can accomplish this by training their
employees with mock scenarios in advance. The responder’s tone should be courteous and come
across understanding and helpful to all. In addition, the answer should be made on the same
platform in which the question was proposed. The response should help to effectively solve the
problem and be available to help solve future problems. Automation replies are easy and useful;
but, they are something to be cautious of because they are not always reliable. Reassurance and
recovery are key in order to keep steady, helpful, and successful social media pages.
Social Media Policy
20
As far as a social media policy goes, Scooter’s needs to make sure to have a policy in
place early on. This policy should be addressed yearly because a policy could be broken at any
time. One thing is for sure- you need to make sure everyone understands exactly what the policy
is before they begin to work for you. This way, there is no room for confusion. Other people you
would want to inform about this policy besides staff members would be the CEO, HR, IT,
Marketing director, PR director and possibly a social media savvy lawyer. Make sure that you
are again keeping your policy well oiled throughout the years without letting it collect dust. A
good suggestion would even be to allow a lawyer to review this policy for any legal issues or
suggestions to further help you create a solid social media policy. Continue to communicate this
policy throughout the year by having meetings in place with the people we listed above to ensure
people are always on the same page. If Scooter’s starts with these suggestions, it will be on the
way to having a great social media policy in place. Having this policy will help the business take
the right steps and ensure the appropriate actions will be taken.
Summary
In conclusion, this campaign is meant for Scooter’s to utilize social media to promote its
healthy, convenient breakfast items. Each social media post should relate to the blog posts,
which represented three themes. These three themes (physical health, emotional well-being, and
mental benefits) are reasons why no one should scoot by breakfast.
The goal of this campaign is to increase the sales of Scooter’s breakfast food. Scooter’s
will try to reach this goal by focusing on our three themes, posting the social media content and
blogs, and measuring/monitoring the effectiveness of the campaign by breakfast sandwich
giveaways on various social mediums through reposts/shares/retweets.

Social media campaign strategy

  • 1. Social Media Campaign Strategy Taylor Johnson, Kristina Parker, Annastasia Tuttle September 17, 2017 Introduction of Client The growing coffee retail industry makes an average of $28 billion dollars in annual revenue and consists of nearly 200,000 different businesses. One of these businesses, Scooter’s Coffee, started two decades ago and is quickly growing in popularity (Pilon). Scooter’s Coffee was founded in 1998 by Don and Linda Eckles in Bellevue, Nebraska. The company is Midwest-based and specializes in espresso drinks and homemade pastries (Scooter’s Coffee Honored). The overall goal for Scooter’s Coffee is to create high quality products and serve its products as quick as possible while maintaining good customer service. ts motto is “Amazing, People, Amazing Drinks...Amazingly Fast!” With 167 stores open in the United States and 144 franchisee commitments to build new stores, Scooter’s Coffee is one of the fastest-growing private companies in the nation (Scooter’s Coffee Facts). Scooter’s Coffee is headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska, and is ranked as the fourth-best coffee franchise on the Entrepreneur Magazine Top Food-Based Franchises list. It was ranked based on its growth as a company, financial strength, and how well it satisfies customers. As the years continue, Scooter’s Coffee hopes to continue being recognized for its hard work and dedication to further grow the brand (Scooter’s Coffee...Top Food Franchises). This campaign strategy plan is aimed for the Scooter’s location in Maryville, Missouri. Scooter’s opened a store in Maryville on April 7, 2017. This building is located at 1305 South Main Street and has a drive-thru as well as an indoor seating area (Scooter’s ..Maryville). 1
  • 2. Campaign Goal The campaign goal for our group is to use social media to boost sales of Scooters breakfast food to target it toward the college audience. The more the audience is aware of this food, the more likely people will pick Scooters when considering purchasing breakfast. Existing Content Scooters current media content includes Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and Linkedin. When looking at its content, Scooter’s provides consumers with up to date information and engages with users in unique ways. Scooters top social media site is Facebook, but all of its remaining social media platforms still have high traffic and each engage consumers in a variety of ways. When looking at Scooter’s Facebook, it provides viewers with up to date information on recent deals and/or news, along with upcoming events. On Facebook the business has over 100,000 people who like the page or follow it. 2
  • 3. Scooters’ Instagram has a variety of photos featuring its products. The posts are aesthetically pleasing and create variety for viewers. As seen to the right, the business uses Instagram trends including the video feature. However, Scooters only has 13,000 followers which is a smaller following compared to other mediums. Scooters uses Twitter as well to reach its intended target audience. Scooters has over 7,000 tweets and over 11,000 followers. The screenshot to the left shows its cover photo as a new product. This is a good indication that Scooters helps keep consumers engaged and up to date on recent products. Pinterest is another form of social media that Scooters has. Although Scooters does not have many items here, it is still a good medium to manipulate. Scooters boards cover topics relating to its offerings which is a good way to reach as many people as possible. 3
  • 4. Scooters also engages with consumers via LinkedIn. It has over 4,000 followers. Scooters provides readers with plenty of information on its business by providing them with external links. Scooters’ LinkedIn showcases its employees as well by providing a list of them on the top right of the page. LinkedIn is a great tool for Scooters to use because potentially anyone can become an owner of a Scooter's. This is a great place to seek out those who are looking to start their own businesses. Content Gaps Scooters’ social media content does have some gaps, meaning that the some content on its social media is weak. On social media, Scooter’s doesn't focus on breakfast food, or any food in general. Its social media sites are also for the company as a whole, and none are targeted for people’s local businesses. These gaps helped us target the direction in which to go with our campaign. If breakfast foods were promoted on its social media sites, people would be aware of these products and be more likely to purchase them. Our group also wants to use social media to the company's advantage to boost sales in breakfast foods by targeting the college aged audience. 4
  • 5. Competitors Scooters has many competitors such as Starbucks, Einstein Bros Bagels, McDonalds, and Hy-vee. Starbucks is a well-known coffee shop that has 37.32 million likes on Facebook (Huff). Since Starbucks is targeting the same audience that we are for our Scooters Campaign, it is a huge competitor. There are many Starbucks conveniently located on college campuses. This can make it hard for Scooters to be recognized for its breakfast foods when students can just stay on campus and have coffee and breakfast. Einstein Bros Bagels, like Starbucks, is a competitor with Scooters because it targets the college aged audience as well. Einsteins are also located on many campuses, and even airports. These easy to access locations help people choose between Einstein and Scooters. The more that people choose other convenient coffee and breakfast shops, the less they will think to choose Scooters. This is why it is important that we focus a strong social media campaign targeting breakfast food toward college students. While McDonald's has taken a lot of heat in the past about its food not being healthy, it is still a huge competitor in breakfast food. People are more likely to choose McDonalds because it is familiar, cheap, and has a long historical background in the breakfast industry. Core Strategy Scooters needs to work on promoting its breakfast foods through social mediums in order to increase sales. The core strategy of this campaign plan is to increase Scooter’s breakfast sales by using an intellectual approach. By using this approach, the audience will know that breakfast is necessary and hopefully, they will fill that need with Scooter’s breakfast food. 5
  • 6. Themes and Messages In order to increase breakfast sales and draw college students to the Maryville Scooter’s, the business should focus on the following themes, which reflect why people need breakfast: ● Physical Health- Being healthy throughout life can be hard, especially with the hectic, busy schedules of many. Skipping breakfast is not healthy; it helps energize the body at the beginning of the day. Telling consumers that Scooter’s is a fast, easy, and healthy option for breakfast will help get them in the door. ● Emotional Well-Being- Mornings are hard for many people. Getting up for work, having last minute tasks to do, or just the stress of life can become overwhelming. Tell the audience that breakfast is known to improve one’s mood and that meeting with friends over breakfast can benefit their emotional well-being. ● Mental Benefits- Since this campaign is targeted at college-aged students, it is important to recognize how eating breakfast can help one mentally. College students are often studying or reading to prepare for exams. Let the audience know that eating breakfast can benefit them personally. Content Plan This campaign will be focused on Scooter’s breakfast food and how it can benefit people physically, emotionally, and mentally. The business will remind the consumers of their products and how their lives can be positively impacted by including Scooter’s breakfast food in their morning routine. 6
  • 7. Sample Content Below are the blog posts and sample social media posts for this campaign strategy plan. The first three blog posts focus on Scooter’s breakfast items and how these items benefit the overall physical health of a person. Taylor Johnson’s Blog Posts: Emotional Well-Being Blog Post 1: 6 Ways Breakfast Improves Your Mood Feeling down in the dumps? Look no further! Here are 6 surprising, but interesting ways  breakfast can improve your mood throughout the day.  1. Makes you feel energized- To be honest, mornings are hard! It is so easy to forget  about breakfast and rush off to school or work. But, as the day goes on, your  hunger will increase and your mood will worsen. Having breakfast filled with  protein, such as a Scooter’s breakfast sandwich, boosts your energy and makes  you feel ready for the day ahead.  2. Helps you feel full for longer- Many people think that skipping breakfast will help  them lose weight since they are missing a meal full of fat and calories. However, if  one skips breakfast, it is more likely that they will fill that hunger later with  unhealthy options (City News). Including protein and carbohydrates at the  beginning of the day will help you feel full for longer, and you will be able to avoid  unhealthy temptations later in the day.  3. It may restore your memory- Having to solve problems, whether it be at work or  school, can be difficult on an empty stomach. When I am hungry, it is easy to just  think about food constantly and not the task at hand. A common breakfast food,  berries, are full of anthocyanins, which can help boost your memory (Eat Right).  4. You feel less anxious and more calm-When I am feeling hungry, I begin tapping my  fingers on a desk or moving my heel up and down against the ground. If I do not  know when my next meal is coming, it makes me anxious and even more hungry.  Having a full stomach helps one feel calm and satisfied.  5. It helps you concentrate-It is known that people want more of what they cannot  have, also described as the principle of scarcity. Wanting and desiring food when it  is not available makes one want it even more. So, on an empty stomach, it is easy  to only think about food. But, if you eat breakfast at the start of the day, you will  tend to think about food less.  7
  • 8. 6. Makes you feel comfortable- Comfort foods are my favorite type of food. They  make you feel happy and satisfied on the inside. Having breakfast at the beginning  of the day makes you comfortable not only physically, but emotionally. Feeling  happy is important, especially at the beginning of the day. Multiple comfort foods  are offered at Scooter’s. Facebook Post: Blog Post 2: 4 Reasons to Meet Up for Breakfast Having a routine and sticking to that routine can get boring and tiresome. Mix up  one of your mornings by meeting with a friend. You would be surprised to find the  numerous emotional benefits that come from sharing a meal with a friend. Trust me  when I say, you NEED an excuse to get out of the house.   1. Good conversation leads to a good day- Many mornings can be antisocial and  boring. It is easy to grab a quick snack and rush out the door. But, how much more  beneficial would it be to meet up with someone and share breakfast? According to  Greatest, being connected socially over a meal is shown to increase happiness  and help alleviate depression (Stay Happy and Healthy). Having this happiness at  the beginning of the day will impact the rest of the day positively.   2. Creates variety in your schedule- Being able to look forward to something is a  great feeling to have. Knowing that an irregular event is coming up creates a sense  of excitement and wonder in a person. Meeting up for breakfast creates a change  8
  • 9. in your schedule and allows you to look forward to something you would not  normally do.   3. Less distractions- At home, many distractions can be present to hinder you from  fully enjoying breakfast. For college students, this could be schoolwork or  television. Having breakfast outside of your home creates an environment with  less distractions, allowing more quality time to be spent with the person across  from you.  4. It’s cheaper than lunch or dinner- Many people avoid eating out because it can be  more expensive than making a meal at home. However, breakfast can be cheaper  than most meals of the day. For example, Scooter’s has multiple breakfast items  that will not break the bank.    Instagram Post: Facebook Post: 9
  • 10. Blog Post 3: Scooters: Four foods that make healthy eating easy! 1. Bacon & Egg Breakfast Sandwich- Try this delicious sandwich that combines the  favorite breakfast items of bacon and eggs. Topped with gouda cheese and served  on a soft, hot ciabatta bun that melts in your mouth. Your taste buds will thank you  later.  2. Southwest Burrito- Fluffy eggs, potato, cheese, chorizo, black beans, corn and  tomatoes all combine in this wild combination! Who knew all these ingredients  would add up to be less than 350 calories? Yee-Haw!  3. Cranberry Orange Scone- Satisfy your sweet side with this cranberry filled scone,  topped with a tangy orange glaze. This unusual combination is surprisingly  scrumptious (and healthy too)!  4. Oatmeal- Savory, sweet, and an added crunch make this combination complete.  Our maple and brown sugar-flavored wholegrain rolled oats combine with dried  fruit and nuts to create a concoction you won’t forget. Start your day off right with  this healthy, energy-boosting breakfast.  Twitter Post: Annastasia Tuttle’s Blog Posts: Mental Benefits Blog Post 1: Scientifically Proven: Breakfast is one of the most important meals! • 14. Nina Parker’s Blog Posts: Physical Health Blog Post 1: Why You Should Wait to Eat Breakfast Until After You Workout When it comes to working out, some may stay away from eating breakfast simply  because they feel it will make them cramp or they perform better on an empty stomach.  While some of those may be reliable, there is an easy fix to your thoughts. Everyone  should eat breakfast, whether that's because of working out or wanting to live a healthy  lifestyle; but, some may not know the benefits of eating breakfast after you workout. This  seems like common sense, but many will go straight to lunch or grab a snack instead of  eating breakfast. Your body still needs to recover after a workout and if you’re not giving  your body the proper nutrients, you can't expect your body to recover properly.   A study was done comparing two groups, one group eating breakfast before their  workout and the other eating after. The study found that the group that ate breakfast  before packed on more weight than the other (NY Times). This was because the group  that ate before exercising no longer responded well to insulin and weren’t pulling  sugar/glucose out of the bloodstream efficiently. Instead, they had begun storing extra  fat within and between muscle cells. The group who ate after exercise had almost no  weight gain and showed no signs of insulin resistance. They also burned the fat they were  taking in more efficiently since your body needs to recover it grabs hold of your food  intake instantly(NY Times). In conclusion, this study can now help those morning  exercisers sleep in just a little longer instead of worrying about getting that breakfast in  before your workout.  Facebook Post 1: 14

  • 16. Blog Post 3: Lose Weight, Eat breakfast at Scooter’s! At Scooters we want to help you maintain a healthy lifestyle. This is why we offer more  than 6 healthy breakfast options under 400 calories. Breakfast is a key ingredient to  living a healthy lifestyle. Many people will skip over this important meal because of the  added on calories it can cause through your day, but by mid morning people are starving.  Here’s 3 reasons why your body needs breakfast.  1) It fuels your body: Breakfast not only begins your day of eating, but it starts your  metabolism. While you are sleeping you are fasting, so when you wake up you  must tell your body you're ready to start the day (Fit Day). Even adding a small  breakfast to your day will help kick start your metabolism and help you burn fat  faster.  2) It keeps you motivated: Your body needs to recover after your morning workout. If  you do not fuel it with proper nutrients you will not get past the first week of  exercising without feeling tired and unmotivated (Fit Day). Adding a good  nutrient-filled breakfast after you workout will keep you motivated through the  whole day. It will also give you the energy you need to replenish the energy you just  lost from working out. Who knows, it might even motivate you to ride your bike to  work or add in more activities in the day.  3) It provides a foundation: As discussed in point 1, you are fasting when you sleep.  Once you wake up it's both a new day and a new you, so in order to make use out  of your whole day, it is essential to add breakfast. Doing this will create a  foundation for the rest of the day. This foundation is key to living a healthy  lifestyle. If you choose to eat an unhealthy breakfast, you will start to create a habit  for the rest of the day(Fit Day). We already know fatty foods don't do a good job  keeping your body fueled and it will only leave you wanting more. Instead, choose  a healthy breakfast choice after your workouts in order to create a healthy  foundation for the rest of your day and life.  4) In conclusion, eating breakfast can help you start living a healthy lifestyle, but if  you want to begin to change your eating habits from bad to good, you should  choose healthier breakfast options to help kickstart your lifestyle change. So come  to Scooter’s, where we offer more than 6 breakfast options under 350 calories!   16
  • 17. Facebook Post 2: Measurement and Monitoring If Scooter’s were to use this plan, it would need to measure the success of the goal at hand: will Scooter’s sell more breakfast items? By talking about these breakfast items and the intellectual benefits of breakfast on social media, we hope to see breakfast sales increase over time. Keeping Scooter’s social media targeted toward our three themes (physical health, emotional well-being, and mental benefits) will help gain the attention of our audience and hopefully convince them to not scoot by breakfast by stopping in a local Scooter’s.The chart below would compare breakfast sales and social media change over the course of four months. Since our campaign used social media posts in Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, those are the social media channels that would be tracked. Scooter’s Campaign Month Current #s (Aug.) September October November December Facebook Shares x,xxx 17
  • 18. Twitter Retweets x,xxx Instagram Reposts x,xxx Breakfast Sales xxx,xxx *Note: Since this campaign is for Maryville’s Scooters, and they do not have their own social media accounts, we would not know these exact numbers until the account was created. The chart above can be used to track breakfast sales and reposts/retweets/shares over the four months. We chose to do reposts/retweets/shares on the various social media channels because we plan to have a giveaway which would feature a free breakfast sandwich for ten lucky winners. Maryville Scooter’s would post on each social medium and say that if people follow them and then repost/share/retweet that post, they would be entered in to win a free breakfast sandwich. Hopefully, this giveaway would not only create more awareness of Scooter’s breakfast food in the Maryville community, but it would increase breakfast sales over time. As time goes on, hopefully the sales of breakfast food will increase because of this giveaway. Our group chose to do our campaign during these months for specific reasons. First, according to NPR, a study found that food intake tends to increase as the weather turns colder (Aubrey). In addition, we had the campaign start early in the fall and end in December because of New Year’s. According to WiseBread, many people make resolutions, such as saving money or wanting to cook within the home, which results in them going out to eat less (Marcin). Lastly, since our target audience is college students, more students would be active during these months as opposed to the summer months. 18
  • 19. We made another chart in addition to the one above in order to show when the sample content we created would be posted. This chart will be for the first month of the campaign, September. • 20. In the table above, descriptions are given as to when a specific social media post should be made known to the public. September is the time when the weather starts to cool and school begins. Posting to social media at the start of the school year may attract new college students to Scooter’s. In addition, posting about the mental, emotional, and physical benefits of a breakfast at Scooter’s may help bring college freshman in who are stressed about their big life change. There are less social media posts in the middle of the month because the first day of fall is at the end of the month, and Scooter’s could use that to its advantage on social media. Specifically, posting about the giveaway the day before Fall will hopefully attract people in to Scooter’s. Also using the rest of our social media posts about the convenient, healthy options at Scooter’s will bring college students in the door to embrace the start of Fall. Customer Comments/Concerns When dealing with customer comments and concerns on social media, the consumer’s comments and questions should be answered as quick as possible. The response should only be made with knowledgeable answers to the situation. Scooters can accomplish this by training their employees with mock scenarios in advance. The responder’s tone should be courteous and come across understanding and helpful to all. In addition, the answer should be made on the same platform in which the question was proposed. The response should help to effectively solve the problem and be available to help solve future problems. Automation replies are easy and useful; but, they are something to be cautious of because they are not always reliable. Reassurance and recovery are key in order to keep steady, helpful, and successful social media pages. Social Media Policy 20
  • 21. As far as a social media policy goes, Scooter’s needs to make sure to have a policy in place early on. This policy should be addressed yearly because a policy could be broken at any time. One thing is for sure- you need to make sure everyone understands exactly what the policy is before they begin to work for you. This way, there is no room for confusion. Other people you would want to inform about this policy besides staff members would be the CEO, HR, IT, Marketing director, PR director and possibly a social media savvy lawyer. Make sure that you are again keeping your policy well oiled throughout the years without letting it collect dust. A good suggestion would even be to allow a lawyer to review this policy for any legal issues or suggestions to further help you create a solid social media policy. Continue to communicate this policy throughout the year by having meetings in place with the people we listed above to ensure people are always on the same page. If Scooter’s starts with these suggestions, it will be on the way to having a great social media policy in place. Having this policy will help the business take the right steps and ensure the appropriate actions will be taken. Summary In conclusion, this campaign is meant for Scooter’s to utilize social media to promote its healthy, convenient breakfast items. Each social media post should relate to the blog posts, which represented three themes. These three themes (physical health, emotional well-being, and mental benefits) are reasons why no one should scoot by breakfast. The goal of this campaign is to increase the sales of Scooter’s breakfast food. Scooter’s will try to reach this goal by focusing on our three themes, posting the social media content and blogs, and measuring/monitoring the effectiveness of the campaign by breakfast sandwich giveaways on various social mediums through reposts/shares/retweets. 21
