Context/Narrative
Snatch is a British crime comedy produced and
released in 2000 with Guy Ritchie as the film
director. Based in a London urban underground
setting, with two intertwined plots with unlicensed
boxing and confrontation with arms dealers and
Irish travelers. The Trailer of the film very quickly
introduces the characters and implies the general
genre of film which is a crime comedy. The
producers of this film are Columbia Pictures with a
total budget of 83.6 million USD. The
Camera Work: Diamond Close Ups
These close ups of the diamond clearly indicate
that the film is based on high profit crime,
interesting the audience to view what happens
in this kind of crime.
These close ups would also draw the attention
of the audience since the aesthetic of the
diamond is eye catching. This would lead the
audience to watch the movie after watching
this trailer.
Camera Work: Boxing
The close upshots of the action of the
unlicensed boxing would appeal to the
audience that are interested in combat sports
and action. This interest generally consists of
the male audience. This would therefore
encourage this audience to watch the film after
watching the trailer.
The medium shot of the screenshot below also
demonstrate the main characters of the plot
being Tommy and Turkish. After viewing the
first 25 seconds of the trailer, I would want to
know who these characters are. This would
then influence the viewer to watch the movie
after watching this trailer.
Mise en scene: Weapons
Weapons were used which could appeal to the
audience that have an interest in action and
crime as well as an interest in weapons. This
general audience would consist of the male
audience. This section of audience then
develop an interest of the film. This would then
lead to this audience view the film after
watching this trailer.
In the screenshot bellow, the amount of
weapons used would also peak the interest of
the audience. This is because the weapons
were strapped onto this persons chest while
the other two characters on the right and left
grab these weapons. This would also interest
the audience because this indicates that there
is a large amount of crime and action involved.
This would then have the audience want to see
the film. The general use of weapons link to the
crime genre of this trailer which is also easily
identified by the audience.
Mise en scene: Jewelry
The mise en scene of Jewelry used in the film
trailer could appeal to the audience viewing
because the jewelry used could indicate crime
and dealing. This would interest the section of
audience that is interested in the crime genre.
The overall quantity and use of jewelry
obviously indicates to the audience that this is
a crime genre film. This makes it easily
understandable for the audience and could
lead to them watching the film after since the
film could also be an easily understandable
media text.
Sound: Humorous Dialogue
The humorous dialogue consistently used
would appeal to the audience very well. For
example, the screenshot above is when Turkish
quotes “What do you need protecting from? Ze
Germans?”. This is because the viewer would
develop an interest in the film the more
qualitive humor is added. This would then lead
the audience to watch the film after watching
the trailer.
This same principle goes with the second
screenshot below when Brick Top quotes “I
don’t care if he’s Mohammed im hard Bruce
Lee”. This use of humor would appeal to almost
all of the audience since Mohammed Ali and
Bruce Lee are very well known celebrities. So
creating humor about these well known names
would appeal to most of the viewers, leading
them to watch the film.
Sound: Soundtrack and Phase
The soundtrack used in the film trailer uses fast
phased music to exhilarate the audience and to
bombard them with information. This
information consists of the camera shot
changes and dialogue used to understand the
trailer. This information hits the audience at a
speed which they can understand and process
easily. The soundtrack from 0:14 complements
this really well because the fast phase music
and fast phase of changing camera shot
changes and fast exchange of dialogue.
The second soundtrack used in the trailer has a
slower phase than the first soundtrack. This
gives the audience time to consume all of the
information from the first section of the trailer.
This change from a fast phase to a slow phase
of soundtrack will have the audience
consistently attentive towards the trailer and
influence the audience to view the film after
understanding all of the information conveyed
in the trailer.
Editing:
The editing used was a rolling transition at the
same time as the revolver was being spun by
the character. This has the audience interested
since there wasn’t any regular frame to frame
transition used to show this film trailer. This
retains the audiences attention since this
transition keeps them interested. The diagetic
sound of the revolver also played also has the
audience since the sound is distorted after to
transition into the next scene. This also retains
the audiences attention which keeps them
viewing till the end of the trailer, leading them
to view the film afterwards.
Editing:
The editing used in this section of the film
trailer was a very fast phased transition from
one frame to another between the credits and
the men. Since this is at the beginning
sequences of the trailer, this gives the
audience an exhilarating feeling, preparing
them to be bombarded with information from
the trailer. This also brings about a unique way
to show the crediting since it is done in such a
fast phase and would interest the audience to
view the actual film.
