So it's 2006. My friend Harold Ford calls me. He'srunning for US Senate in Tennessee. And he saysMellody, I desperately need some national press.Do you have any ideas?
So I had an idea. I called a friend who was in NewYork at one of the most successful mediacompanies in the world. And she said, why don'twe host an editorial board lunch for Harold. Youcome with him.
Harold and I arrive in New York. We are in our bestsuits. We look like shiny new pennies. And we getto the receptionist, and we say, we're here for thelunch.
She motions for us to follow her. We walk througha series of corridors. And all of a sudden, we findourselves in a stark room, at which point shelooks at us, and she says, where are youruniforms?
Just as this happens, my friend rushes in. Theblood drains from her face. There are literally nowords, right? And I look at her, and I say, now, don't you think we need more than one blackperson in the US Senate?
Now Harold and I-- we still laugh about that story. And in many ways, the moment caught me offguard. But deep, deep down inside, I actuallywasn't surprised. And I wasn't surprised becauseof something my mother taught me about 30years before.
You see, my mother was ruthlessly realistic. Iremember one day coming home from a birthdayparty, where I was the only black kid invited. Andinstead of asking me the normal motherlyquestions, like did you have fun or how was thecake, my mother looked at me, and she said, howdid they treat you?
I was seven. I did not understand. I mean whywould anyone treat me differently. But she knew. And she looked me right in the eye, and she said, they will not always treat you well.
Now race is one of those topics in America thatmakes people extraordinarily uncomfortable. Youbring it up at a dinner party or in a workplaceenvironment, it is literally the conversationalequivalent of touching the third rail. There isshock followed by a long silence.
And even coming here today, I told some friendsand colleagues that I planned to talk about race, and they warned me. They told me, don't do it,that there'd be huge risks in me talking about thistopic, that people might think I'm a militant blackwoman, and I would ruin my career.
And I have to you, I actually for a moment was abit afraid. Then I realized the first step to solvingany problem is to not hide from it. And the firststep to any form of action is awareness. And so Idecided to actually talk about race.
And I decided that if I came here and shared withyou some of my experiences, then maybe wecould all be a little less anxious and a little morebold in our conversations about race. Now, I knowthere are people out there who will say that theelection of Barack Obama meant that it was theend of racial discrimination for all eternity, right?
But I work in the investment business. And wehave a saying, the numbers do not lie. And here, there are significant, quantifiable racialdisparities that cannot be ignored-- in householdwealth, household income, job opportuniti.

(((((((((((((((((((((((((((ME>>When it is time it is time. No matter who it is, there is no
stopping or preventing the inevitable.
That is our problem today, we place importance where there is none.
We forget that we are only human at times and being that, we have a shelf life.
So when government talks about too big to fail, I think about life and nothing is too big
or important to not be.
Even the illusion that some things are too big or important will not last
Simple but true isn’t it?
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Inspiration can have an infinite variety of sources, such as music, another person
(mythical ones count), mother nature or a really good bike ride. Literally, the word’s
origins mean “breathed upon” — as if a higher being was breathing down on you, filling
you with inspiration. Cool, right? Everyone has their own sources of inspiration, and
finding yours may be a frustrating journey, but it’s amazing what we people come up
with post-inspiration, from crafty goodies to fascinating ideas on how to save the world.
………………
“Most people would rather die than think: many do.” – Bertrand Russell
,,,,,,,,,,,,
most frustration in the world is caused by people not actually thinking. The
communication breakdowns, the lack of clarity at work and at home, the little things that
3. just piss you off. They all relate to a lack of thinking on the behalf of one or more of the
involved parties.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Ask most people what really pisses them off and they will say inconsiderate people. If
you think about it these people don’t think how their actions will affect others (or they
don’t care which also shows a lack of thinking). The result: more agro in the world. Now,
if everyone took a moment to stop and think then things would be a lot rosier. Don’t you
agree?
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Could thinking stop you worrying?
Could thinking see you get along with more people?
Could thinking see you succeed (wherever that may be)?
So, think. I dare you!

I’m currently listening to Jack Welsh’s audiobook Winning. In it he explains a few of his
ideas, philosophies and recommendations based on his experience as CEO of GE. A lot
of what he says makes perfect sense and for that reason it appears here.
Jack is big on candor. Clear, honest and open communication at all times is one of his
greatest recommendations. He talks about the necessity of candor in good times and bad,
when you’re giving praise and criticism, whether you’re talking to a superior or
subordinate. He is absolutely right.
Now, obviously we don’t want to go around belittling people. Nor do we want to go
overboard with our delight in their abilities.
Too often we are concerned with the possibility of offending someone, hurting someones
feelings or not allowing someone to save face. In such situations we don’t tell it like it is.
And everyone suffers. You suffer because you haven’t said what you mean and they
suffer because they don’t know what you are really getting at. This is not clear
communication. The same is true when giving praise where it is unwarranted or over-the-
top. It can only cause confusion.
Candor in communication does not allow for ambiguity. It does not allow room for
confusion. Sure it may seem abrupt or a little harsh but at least everyone knows where
they stand and no-one is likely to be surprised by the truth as they already know it.
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
“But I don’t know how” is one of the poorest excuses in the world.
Worse still is “I’ve never been good at that” (whatever that is is unimportant).
I have an idea! If you know you’re not good at something why not try to improve
yourself?! Now there’s a novel thought.
Can’t type? Get yourself a typing program and teach yourself.
Can’t spell? Get a tutor, or read more, or buy a dictionary.
Can’t add? Throw away your calculator and start to use your grey matter.
Neglecting to complete tasks or take on challenging roles because you don’t know how to
do something is one of the greatest limits that you can impose upon yourself. There are
already enough limitations in this world. Why add more? Why would you knowingly do
it to yourself?
Try something new. Think outside the square that you live in. Be proactive. Listen to
audio books, read, join clubs. Never stop improving!

For me, the best sound is nothing at all. Yup, that’s right silence. Call me and intravert,
call me un social but take away the noise and distraction and for me, it’s bliss…

Commonsense says “don’t put all of your eggs into one basket.”
Uncommonsense says “put all your eggs into one basket and watch that basket like a
hawk.”
Diversification means a division of attention. It means complication. It means
complexity. We already have too much complexity in our lives. Modern technology has
made things busier rather than easier. It’s nothing like The Jetsons. We don’t need more
complexity we need more simpli

Tunnel vision equals simplicity. Forget about all the superfluous stuff floating around the
edges of your vision. Put the blinkers on. Focus unwaveringly on your ultimate vision,
your ultimate goal.
Successful people have tunnel vision. They remove the waste and focus only on what
they have to focus on. They don’t concern themselves with anything that does not
contribute to their ultimate goal.

Sometimes we have to do things we don’t like doing. Perhaps we have to tell a friend that
their new haircut sucks or we have to retrench an employee or inform someone that
they’ve failed at something that means a lot to them. These situations are rarely
comfortable. No-one ever said life was going to be easy.

Recently, I’ve had first hand exposure to a number of instances where a bit of gumption
was required yet was sadly lacking. It’s painful to watch. If you don’t have the cojones to
do what needs to be done then don’t put your hand up in the first place. If you can’t say
‘no’, if you can’t tell it like it is, if you can’t admit to being wrong, then be happy to
stand in the background and not make an impact on the world. If you want to be someone
and get things done then you will have to rock the boat.
There are already too many nobodies in the world, join them if you want, if not – grow a
pair!

When you run or own a small business, there are many enjoyable aspects and privileges
that your staff don’t get to enjoy.
Having said that along with the good things, there are also aspects that are uncomfortable,
stressful or just plain hard. You cant have one without the other.
Trying to enjoy the good aspects while avoiding the difficult aspects will end your role in
charge of that small business quickly. If your not cut out for the tough decisions, at least
be smart enough to recognise it before its to late.

Even though this story starts with a friend of a friend of mine, I’m 99% sure it’s true.
Some of you know this friend of mine so you can ask them to confirm its validity.
This girl went out with a friend of about a year on a date, one thing led to another and she
ended up staying at his place and having a good time. Morning comes around and he tells
5. her he has to go to work but she can sleep in, make herself a coffee, do whatever then
lock the door behind her as she leaves.
She finally awakes, gets ready for the day, takes a dump in the toilet and to her horror
realises that the toilet won’t flush. After debating what to do, she grabs a plastic bag,
scoops out the poop and ties the bag up, ready to be thrown in a bin outside. As she’s
leaving, she writes the guy a note, thanking him for a lovely time and that she would love
to see him again sometime soon. She leaves the house, locks the door, closes it behind
her and it then hits that she’d left the bag of poop next to the note before exiting. Without
any way of getting in, she leaves, never to answer his calls or see him again.

Sometimes the people we surround ourselves with can be a bit like dead leaves. They
restrict our growth and it’s not until we cut them away that we can grow to our true
potential. Sometimes they can grow and rejuvenate themselves after being cut adrift.
Telling someone to go fuck themselves can therefore sometimes be the best
medicine!))))))))))))))))
