1. Dr. Edwin Zondervan discussed the development of intelligent processing and decision-making tools. He argued that processing problems can be viewed as network problems that can be systematically analyzed and optimized.
2. Examples were provided of how modeling tools can help optimize reactor design and operation, biorefinery design, pharmaceutical separations, and supply chains to balance objectives like safety, quality, economics and environmental impact.
3. The key challenges are dealing with uncertainty in sources and sinks, satisfying multiple conflicting objectives, and selecting optimal options from large, complex networked systems. Developing flexible systems and trade-offs between economic and environmental goals were emphasized.

Waterschapsbedrijf Limburg is a collaborative organization of two water authorities in Limburg province, responsible for purifying and transporting wastewater. It started the WAUTER project to standardize, centralize and virtualize its over 50 servers, 10 databases and 10 software systems across 144 pumping stations and wastewater treatment plants. The project integrated asset management, process information and operator logbook systems to improve efficiency. It reduced servers from 50 to 4, achieved 99.995% uptime, and established a central control room. Future phases aim to incorporate weather forecasts, alarm management, big data analytics and knowledge management to further optimize operations.
