B.S. Degree
The B.S. degree is a pre­professional degree that is designed to prepare students for graduate level study in speech­
language pathology or audiology. The undergraduate curriculum is comprised of two levels: pre­Speech­Language Pathology
and Speech­Language Pathology (SPLP). Students in pre­Speech­Language Pathology are initially in provisional status.
Typically, during the freshman and sophomore years pre­Speech­Language Pathology students are required to take a
general core in the areas of English, math, science, and social and behavioral sciences as well as pre­Speech­Language
Pathology courses.

Students are eligible to apply for progression from the pre­Speech­Language Pathology program to the undergraduate
Speech­Language Pathology program after completing pre­Speech­Language Pathology program curricula. Beginning
Summer I, 1995, all students declaring a SPLP major must meet the following requirements before applying for regular
admission to the degree program: 1) satisfactory completion of any required developmental course, 2) satisfactory
completion of all courses under the "Freshman Year" requirements of the SPLP curriculum, 3) satisfactory completion of all
special requirements of the SPLP major. These special requirements include a) completion of SPLP 1013, 1052, and 2002
with a "C" or better; b) completion of a speech, language, and hearing screening test; c) an uncorrected cumulative GPA of
2.75 or better; d) an uncorrected GPA of 3.0 or better in the 1000­ and 2000­level SPLP courses, e) SLP faculty approval.
Note that meeting the basic requirements does not guarantee that the student will be selected to progress to upper­level
SPLP courses. The above requirements also apply to transfer students.
Upon progression and acceptance into the Speech­Language Pathology program, students are eligible to enroll in advanced
(4000 level) courses. Students must complete 25 hours of supervised observation in audiology and/or speech­language
pathology at approved on and off­campus sites (including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools, and private agencies).

M.S. Program
The master's degree program in Speech­Language Pathology at ULM prepares students for a career as a speech­language
pathologist. The M.S. program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) of the American Speech­
Language­Hearing Association (ASHA). Graduate courses in Speech­Language Pathology provide students with advanced
study and specialization in speech­language pathology (e.g., language, voice, phonology/articulation, fluency, swallowing,
and hearing). Knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom and clinic provide opportunities for students to acquire the
professional competencies necessary to practice independently in the field of speech­language pathology. Additionally,
knowledge and skills acquired in the Speech­Language Pathology research class are instrumental in allowing students to
conduct independent research which is often presented at local, state, regional, and national levels.

Students completing the graduate program qualify for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in speech­language
pathology from ASHA www.asha.org and licensure from the Louisiana Board of Examiners for Speech­Language Pathology
and Audiology www.lbespa.org. Students from Speech­Language Pathology typically do very well (usually 100% pass rate)
on the National Praxis Examination in Speech­Language Pathology.
Accelerated M.S. Program
Students who have an undergraduate degree in a field other than speech­language pathology may be eligible for the
Accelerated M.S. program. Students initially take only undergraduate Speech­Language Pathology courses, and add

graduate courses as they fulfill undergraduate requirements. Upon completion of the Accelerated Program, students are
awarded the M.S. degree in Speech­Language Pathology and are eligible for ASHA certification and state licensure.
Applications for the Accelerated M.S. program are only accepted for the fall semester.
