Google Summer of Code is a program that pairs student developers with open source software organizations, providing stipends for students to work on projects over the summer. The program has run for three summers, growing each year to involve over 900 students, 130 organizations, and 90 countries by 2007, with over 80% of projects successfully completed each year. Many past students have gained career opportunities in technology companies and gone on to become mentors themselves, helping the open source community.
