Today, Yammer's CEO David Sacks announced to the press Yammer's new products. Yammer's new product direction solidifies its position as a social layer, a system of engagement designed to work with systems of record.
Today, the following products were announced:
* Yammer Activity Stream API
* Open Graph for Enterprise
* Yammer Embed
These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled Biz Models for Hi-Tech Products to analyze the business model for Slack, a supplier of collaborative tools for teams. These tools offer a new form of mail service that is very different from that of traditional e-mail programs such as Microsoft Outlook, G-Mail, and Yahoo-Mail. Slack designed its mail service for the cloud computing environment, as opposed to the traditional in-house computing environment. Accessing documents from the cloud is easier with Slack’s service than with Microsoft Outlook as is enabling apps for Slack’s service and reading messages. Reading messages is easier because they are organized by person (like instant messaging on smart phones) as opposed to time. By measuring usage, Slack can charge by active user thus reducing the risk of trying Slack, particularly for individuals, who are the main market for Slack. These slides describe the value proposition, customers, method of value capture, scope of activities and the method of strategic control for Slack.

Achieving Accelerated Organisation Change through Internal NetworksOptimice
We have recently formalised our methods for using social/organisational network analysis techniques to identify critical influencers in an organisation that can help facilitate accelerated change within large and complex organisations. We are seeing that internal networks are becoming a critical resource for promulgating positive change. Our research has shown that the 'critical mass' in modern organisations are also the group most likely to be least influenced by top-down change initiatives. Using social network techniques we have been able to identify with some precision, those roles/people in the enterprise that are at highest risk of NOT being influenced by enterprise wide change initiatives. The task of assigning workspaces can be very emotionally charged. By default, workspaces will often be aligned with the formal organisation chart, making the assumption that the formal structure also reflects the preferred work patterns. This assumption is becoming highly questionable as workplaces become increasingly interdependent. Workspace allocation can become a highly emotive issue. It’s not just about the corner offices. It can be impossible to meet everyone’s expectations, yet its important that organisations maximise the opportunity that co-location offers. Despite the facility offered by modern communications technology, physical co-location is still by far the best means for sharing knowledge and maximising productivity. So how can we converge the duplicity of personal co-working preferences, natural team collaboration patterns with physical workplace design, to achieve maximum possible productivity?

IQ and EQ (Emotional Intelligence) measures have traditionally been designed to assess the leader’s cognitive and emotional capability.While it can be said that EQ acknowledges the need to be able to manage relationships , individual measures concentrate on the “how” and not the “who” and the “what”.
Having the capability to build strong relationships (how) does not necessarily result in the leader being connected to the ‘right’ people (who) and gaining the ‘right’ experiences (what) from interacting with them. The difference is CQ, which can be the difference between gaining that coveted leadership role or not.

Techniques to optimize the pagerank algorithm usually fall in two categories. One is to try reducing the work per iteration, and the other is to try reducing the number of iterations. These goals are often at odds with one another. Skipping computation on vertices which have already converged has the potential to save iteration time. Skipping in-identical vertices, with the same in-links, helps reduce duplicate computations and thus could help reduce iteration time. Road networks often have chains which can be short-circuited before pagerank computation to improve performance. Final ranks of chain nodes can be easily calculated. This could reduce both the iteration time, and the number of iterations. If a graph has no dangling nodes, pagerank of each strongly connected component can be computed in topological order. This could help reduce the iteration time, no. of iterations, and also enable multi-iteration concurrency in pagerank computation. The combination of all of the above methods is the STICD algorithm. [sticd] For dynamic graphs, unchanged components whose ranks are unaffected can be skipped altogether.

For massive graphs that fit in RAM, but not in GPU memory, it is possible to take
advantage of a shared memory system with multiple CPUs, each with multiple cores, to
accelerate pagerank computation. If the NUMA architecture of the system is properly taken
into account with good vertex partitioning, the speedup can be significant. To take steps in
this direction, experiments are conducted to implement pagerank in OpenMP using two
different approaches, uniform and hybrid. The uniform approach runs all primitives required
for pagerank in OpenMP mode (with multiple threads). On the other hand, the hybrid
approach runs certain primitives in sequential mode (i.e., sumAt, multiply).
