Sections 365 and 1113 of the US Bankruptcy Code allow debtors like GM and Chrysler to reject "burdensome" contracts like dealer and union agreements cheaply and easily. Section 365 gives debtors the right to assume or reject executory contracts, and rejection is treated as a pre-petition breach of contract claim. Section 1113 allows debtors to modify union contracts if necessary for reorganization. Additionally, Section 506(a) allows debtors to write down secured debt to the value of collateral, and Section 363 enables debtors to sell assets free of liens in quick Section 363 sales. These provisions of Chapter 11 bankruptcy made it an effective solution for restructuring GM and Chrysler's operations and obligations
