Problems with Government Weather (NWS) For
Businesses

Caterpillar in Oxford, MS, Feb. 5, 2008
• Facility destroyed; $23 million in damage
• No injuries or fatalities because Safety Manager received a SkyGuard
warning 22 minutes before tornado hit and enacted tornado plan.
• NWS issued tornado warning 4 minutes after EF3 tornado hit facility.
• Facility operational in less than 2 weeks at temporary facility because their
most important asset, their people, were safe.

Shortly after 6 p.m. February 5, an
F3 tornado ravaged a Caterpillar
Facility in Oxford Mississippi.
Thanks to SkyGuard, employees
had enough time to shelter before
the twister hit.
The warning received from
SkyGuard was the only warning
issued before the tornado hit the
building.

SkyGuard clients had 10 extra minutes to prepare
• 4:47pm - SkyGuard was the FIRST to warn Hattiesburg clients of the
damaging tornado. SkyGuard warning was issued at 4:47pm CT valid from
5:05-5:45. Warning stated “A storm with a history of producing a tornado
will move northeast across this area.”
• SkyGuard beat the government NWS warning by 10 full minutes. This
provides a clear competitive and safety advantage for SkyGuard clients.
• 4:57pm – NWS tornado warning issued until 6pm.
• 5:10pm – SkyGuard updates warning stating “A large tornado has been
reported southwest of Hattiesburg and will impact your location…”
• 5:15pm - The tornado arrived at around 5:15 in Hattiesburg so SkyGuard
client’s had at least 28 minutes of advance notification. 10 more minutes
than other sources.
• 5:26 pm AES cancels the Tornado Warning early for West Hattiesburg so that
normal operations can resume.
