In Lithuania, 54.7% of the population is overweight or obese. Unhealthy eating contributes to this, as the food industry produces many processed foods high in fat, sugar, and salt. The main causes of death in Lithuania are diseases of the cardiovascular system like heart attacks and strokes. In 2014, over half (56%) of all deaths were due to cardiovascular diseases. The underlying cause is unhealthy diet, low physical activity, and consequently high cholesterol levels and blockage of blood vessels. This situation reduces life expectancy and quality of life for many Lithuanians and increases economic costs for the country.
