The Sistine Chapel is located in Vatican City and was built in 1477 by Pope Sixtus IV. It is famous for its ceiling, which was painted by Michelangelo and took over two years to complete. The paintings depict scenes from the life of Jesus Christ and include Michelangelo's famous work, The Last Judgement. The chapel is only used for Mass on Christmas Eve and Easter, and is otherwise open for visitors to see the paintings, including during the election of a new Pope through the papal conclave process. Over the years, restoration was needed to clean the paintings due to dirt and sweat from the thousands of daily visitors.
