Scalable Data Science with SparkR: Spark Summit East talk by Felix CheungSpark Summit
R is a very popular platform for Data Science. Apache Spark is a highly scalable data platform. How could we have the best of both worlds? How could a Data Scientist leverage the rich 9000+ packages on CRAN, and integrate Spark into their existing Data Science toolset?
In this talk we will walkthrough many examples how several new features in Apache Spark 2.x will enable this. We will also look at exciting changes in and coming next in Apache Spark 2.x releases.
Spark r under the hood with Hossein FalakiDatabricks
SparkR is a new and evolving interface to Apache Spark. It offers a wide range of APIs and capabilities to Data Scientists and Statisticians. Being a distributed system with a JVM core some R users find SparkR errors unfamiliar. In this talk we will show what goes on under the hood when you interact with SparkR. We will look at SparkR architecture, performance bottlenecks and API semantics. Equipped with those, we will show how some common errors can be eliminated. I will use debugging examples based on our experience with real SparkR use cases.
SouJava May 2020: Apache Camel 3 - the next generation of enterprise integrationClaus Ibsen
In this session, we'll discuss:
- What’s Apache Camel: An overview of Camel and what you use it for and why you should care.
- Camel 3: Demos of how Camel 3, Camel K and Camel Quarkus all work together, and will provide insights into Camel’s role in the next major release of Red Hat Integration products.
- Camel K: This serverless integration platform provides low-code/no-code capabilities, where integrations can be snapped together quickly using the powers from integration patterns and Camel’s extensive set of connectors.
- Camel Quarkus: Using Knative (the fast runtime of Quarkus) and Camel K brings awesome serverless features, such as auto-scaling, scaling to zero, and event-based communication, with great integration capabilities from Apache Camel.
You will also hear about the latest Camel sub-project Camel Kafka Connectors which makes it possible to use all the Camel components as Kafka Connect connectors.
Finally we bring details of the roadmap for what is coming up in the Camel projects.
And after the presentation we have about 30 minutes of QA answering all the questions from the audience.

Session abstract
Nowadays, every platform considers having the "OSGi supported" checkbox ticked and offers "easy" and "smooth" migration from the classical Java EE world to the new "modular" future. In spite of the multiple guidelines and best practices, migrating from a monolithic Java EE application to OSGi remains a pain and reveals a number of hidden and time-consuming pitfalls and hurdles. The session will guide you through the usual problems that every project faces on its way to holy modularity, providing helpful tips and tricks on how to quickly find your way through the maze of NoClassDeffFound, ClassCast, and other OSGi-specific errors.
Intermediate languages are used in compiler construction to simplify retargeting compilers to multiple machine architectures. In the implementation of \emph{domain-specific languages} (DSLs), compilers typically generate high-level source code, rather than low-level machine instructions. DSL compilers target a software platform, i.e. a programming language with a set of libraries, deployable on one or more operating systems. DSLs enable targeting \emph{multiple} software platforms if its abstractions are platform independent. While transformations from DSL to each targeted platform are often conceptually very similar, there is little reuse between transformations due to syntactic and API differences of the target platforms, making supporting multiple platforms expensive. In this paper, we discuss the design and implementation of PIL, a Platform Independent Language, an intermediate language providing a layer of abstraction between DSL and target platform code, abstracting from syntactic and API differences between platforms, thereby removing the need for platform-specific transformations. We discuss the use of PIL in an implemementation of WebDSL, a DSL for building web applications.
Scalable Data Science in Python and R on Apache Sparkfelixcss
In the world of Data Science, Python and R are very popular. Apache Spark is a highly scalable data platform. How could a Data Scientist integrate Spark into their existing Data Science toolset? How does Python work with Spark? How could one leverage the rich 10000+ packages on CRAN for R?
We will start with PySpark, beginning with a quick walkthrough of data preparation practices and an introduction to Spark MLLib Pipeline Model. We will also discuss how to integrate native Python packages with Spark.
Compare to PySpark, SparkR is a new language binding for Apache Spark and it is designed to be familiar to native R users. In this talk we will walkthrough many examples how several new features in Apache Spark 2.x will enable scalable machine learning on Big Data. In addition to talking about the R interface to the ML Pipeline model, we will explore how SparkR support running user code on large scale data in a distributed manner, and give examples on how that could be used to work with your favorite R packages.
