This chapter introduces Peddler Zug, a Russian Jewish immigrant living in America with his son Izzy. While doing his daily rounds collecting junk, Zug's wagon passes a young boy named Conover sitting on a fence. Izzy shouts insults at Conover, sparking Zug's anger. Years later, the two boys attend the same high school where Izzy, a loner who gravitates towards radical literature, gets in a fight with Conover after insulting America during a history class. The fight that ensues highlights the deep animosity between the two boys.
