This document summarizes yarn singeing and biopolishing processes. Yarn singeing involves burning off projecting fibers from yarn by passing it over a gas flame or heated plate, giving the yarn a clean surface and reducing pilling. Biopolishing uses the enzyme cellulase to smooth fabrics by targeting small fibers, resulting in softer handfeel and less pilling. The document describes singeing and biopolishing machines, tests for effectiveness like pilling tests, the action of cellulase enzymes, and recipes and flowcharts for biopolishing process.

6. SINGEING
1. The word singeing is the noun from of the verb
singe which means burn (something) superficially
or lightly.
2. In textile Singeing is a process applied to both yarns
and fabric to produce an even surface by burning
off the projecting fibers.
3. Accomplished by passing the yarn over a gas flame
or heated copper plates at a speed sufficient to
burn only the projecting fibers.
8. YARN SINGEING
1. Removing projecting fiber or fuzz from the yarns
surface by passing the yarn over a gas flame.
2. Can also be done by a heated cupper plate.
3. Is an important pretreatment.
4. Gives a clean yarn surface.
5. The risk of pilling decreases.
6. Makes the yarn suitable for dyeing process.
11. YARN SINGEING MACHINE
The machine consists of a number of gas burners equal
to the no. of packages to be handled by the machine.
The yarn passing from a big package allowed to meet
gas burner & the singed yarn is rewound on another
package.
Now a day electrical burner heated to about 1,100
degree Celsius are used assuring great safety.
16. EFFECTIVE TEST FOR SINGEING
Pilling test is the effective test for singeing. Pills are the
entangled fibers clinging to the cloth surface which gives
fabric unusual appearance. For this test the fabric sample is
needed and then the fabric used to rub against the a
standard fabric. After a certain number of rub the sample is
examined and number of pills counted. After that the
samples are examined with the given standards & the
effectiveness is decided.
19. BIOPOLISHING
o Biopolishing is an important enzyme pre treatment. This
process is used to decrease the pilling tendency &
fuzziness of cellulose by targeting the small fibers of
yarn with a n enzyme named cellulase.
o Removes projecting fiber & slubs from knitted fabric.
o Soften fabric hand & provides a smooth fabric
appearance& fast washing
o Used for making fabric quality greater.
21. 3 ENZYME SYSTEM
ENDOCELLULOSE EXOCELLULOSE CELLUBIOS
o ENDOCELLULOSE: Separates fabric from surface.
o EXOCELLULOSE: Converts into CELLUBIOS.
o CELLUBIOS: Breaks CELLUBIOS into glucose.
23. ACTION OF CELLULASE
Enzymes are large molecular complex & cant penetrate interior
of the fabric & hence enzymes action takes place. Preferentially
on the surface cellulases are capable breaking the 1,4-B
glucose bonds. Cellulose randomly breaks when the cotton
fabric is treated with a cellulase solution under optimum
condition. Cellulases hydrolysis cellulose by reaching to the 1,4-
B glucoside bond of cellulose molecule. As a result the fabric
surface got smoother and the process is done. After the
process is done the cellulase need to deactivated.
