Editor's Notes

  1. Slide 1Welcome everyone. I am Eileen Berardini and this is Pati O’Connor and we are here to present a new concept program for adults 70+
  2. Slide 2The Sinatracize! concept is flexible enough to administer in a variety of recreational settings. We have designed this demonstration for a home facility. Sinatracize incorporates exercise and social components to encourage physical, mental and emotional stimulation and increase retention. It incorporates: A stretch and tone fitness programA social component with refreshments, memory games and prizesWe will elaborate on these aspects and have a demonstration shortly. The program was designed to target Canada’s growing aging population and address some of the needs and desires of this diverse group. Clients who are fitness conscious but mobility restricted and also enjoy socializing with others will benefit immensely from this program.
  3. Slide 3The Canadian population is aging. In 2011, the average age of the population was almost 40 years. This means half of the population was older than that and half was younger. Seniors make up the fastest-growing age group. This trend is expected to continue for the next several decades because of the low birth rate, an increase life expectancy, and the agingbaby boomers. In 2011, there were 5 million Canadians over and by 2051one in four Canadians willbe over 65.This means that we will need more and diverse programs to meet the needs of this group. Facilities administration to this target group is further complicated by the fact that each decade has its own specific needs and desires. So a ‘one size fits all’ program will not meet the needs of this demographic. Innovative programs that are flexible and adaptable to specific age groups will be the trend.Sinatracize is that program. It is innovative, flexible, adaptable and cost-effective.
  4. Slide 4The program is designed to be administered once-a-week, preferably in the mornings, for 90 minutes. As mentioned, the program is divided into two components:The first 45 minuteswill feature a stretch and tone fitness program led by a qualified instructor and set to music of the 30’s and 40’s. The music can be modified to address the interests of specific age groups.Exerciseswill feature light dance moves and stretches using chairs, canes and hats. The final 45 minutes of the program is structured socializing. A table will be set up with refreshments and clients will be led by the facilitator in a variety of memory enhancing games. One game suggestion would be ‘Name that Tune’. The facilitator plays a short segment of a song and the first to guess the name of the song will win a point. At the end of the game, the person with the most points wins a prize.
  5. Slide 5FUN PROPS DOUBLE AS RESISTANCE TRAINING TOOLS CHAIRS – Seated exercises take the strain off joints.CANES – A fun tool used for stretching, curling biceps, flexing triceps and for added support while standing.HATS – Arms movements when taking the hat on and off.MUSIC - Songs from the 30’s-40’s to jog those memories and encourage a sing along to all the favorites.  The benefits of this program are:To keep participants’ active. Work on flexibility and reflexes. Light cardiovascular exercises. Memory enhancement through memorization of moves and memory games. To have fun and socialize.
  6. SLIDE 6Now we’ll talk briefly about the suggested marketing plan. The marketing campaign and tools used forSinatracize will depend on the facility offering the program. For a Home Facility we suggest using a flyer similar to the one you see here.It can be posted on the bulletin board and smaller versions can be created to place on tables in high traffic areas. The program can be included in the home facilities monthly program schedule which is distributed to residents. Andto create excitement for the new program we suggest using word of mouth, one-on-one marketing techniques by rolling up small flyers like newspapers, delivering them individually to each resident while playing ‘Frank Sinatra’s song ‘New York, New York’ with has the lyrics ‘Start Spreading the News’ in it. For Community Centres – An advertisement can be placed in a local paper targeting the senior market along with flyer postings in the facility and at retail outlets and other locations frequented by the target group. A press release can be sent out to local media outlets letting them know of the new program and inviting interviews. An inclusion of the program in the facility’s program guideOnline and social media options which are free orlow cost; for instance, online newsletters and Facebook ads. Baby Boomers are increasingly using digital technology to communicate with others and research has indicated that 46 percent of baby boomers now maintain a profile on social networks. Low cost pay per click online ads can be targets directly to the demographics, geographic, psychographic and behavioristic target market profiles.
  7. SLIDE 7The cost of the program to existing facilities is relatively minimal and could be easily covered by the existing recreational budget. The one-time initial cost would be for equipment not currently available at the facility such as hats and canes. All other equipment and space allowances will already be supplied. The on-going costs would include the cost of a fitness/program instructor and refreshments served. The total added weekly costs to an existing facility could be as low as $50 to cover the cost of the program facilitator and $20 for refreshments and prizing options.
  8. Slide 8There is a lot of existing and ongoing research on the power of music and the aging process. A recently produced documentary called Alive Inside follows social worker Dan Cohen, executive director of the non-profit Music & Memory, as brings iPods to a nursing home. Dan Cohen discovered by accident, what scientists have been studying for years, that a person suffering from memory loss can seem to "awaken" ...when given music they have an emotional attachment to. Author and neurologist Oliver Sacks, who has written extensively about the effects of music on the human brain says “Music imprints itself on the brain deeper than any other human experience. Music evokes emotion and emotion can bring with it memory.“Our program is designed to use music to a niche market of the aging population who are still moderately active results in similar emotional, physical and mental benefits. Here is a clip from the documentary of Henry Dryer, a 92-year-old man who 're-acquires his identity' through the music of his youth.
  9. SLIDE 9And now, Let’s Sinatracize!
