The Lion and the Mouse
Aesop’s Fable
One day, a lion slept in the jungle. A
mouse ran up and down his body,
and this woke him up. He then
roared and frightened the little
mouse. The lion then placed his paw
on the mouse’s tail, picked him up,
and opened his mouth to swallow
the little mouse.
“Please forgive me, dear
king,” cried the mouse. “If you
let me go, I will never forget
your kindness, and who
knows, I would be able to
help you someday,” the
mouse added. The lion loved
the idea, so he let him go.
Some time later, the lion was
caught in a trap, and the hunters
tied him to a tree. They left him and
started to look for their wagon. Just
then, the mouse passed by and
saw the lion.
Without hesitation, the mouse
nibbled and gnawed the ropes that
trapped the king. The lion thanked
the mouse, and they became good
friends.
Answer the following questions:
1. Why did the lion let go of the mouse?
2. What happened to the lion?
3. What did the mouse do?
4. What did you learn from the fable?
When did the events or actions in the
story take place?
The simple past tense
expresses an action that
happened before or
sometime in the past.
