EXPERT ADVICE
We’re world-leading
experts in working at height
www.simian-risk.com
TG20
The TG20 series has
grown to be the UK’s most
authoritative guidance on
scaffolding configurations.
TG20 is widely recognised as the
default standard for tube and fitting
scaffolds constructed in the UK and is
the ‘go to’ document for enforcement
authorities and other industry
stakeholders.
TG20 benchmarks the configurations
of scaffolding required to ensure
compliance with Schedule 3 of the
Work at Height Regulations 2005 and
it is imperative that those involved
in scaffolding operations, from both
a client and supplier perspective,
have a sound understanding of the
implications and responsibilities
it brings.
Our understanding of the scaffolding
industry and the standards that sit
behind TG20, mean that we are ideally
placed to offer advice, guidance and
training on its practical application.
SG4:15
SG4:15 – Preventing Falls
in Scaffolding Operations is
arguably the NASC’s most
widely recognised guidance
document and has evolved
significantly over the past
20 years or so.
SG4 is widely regarded across
industry as the single biggest
influence in improved scaffolding
safety performance over the past few
decades. It continues to recognise
technological advancements in
providing best practice principles
and techniques for those responsible
for erecting, modifying and
dismantling scaffolding.
Compliance with SG4 does not
only ensure Scaffolder safety, it
also provides those responsible
for managing scaffold activity with
reassurance that the standards
demanded by statutory requirements
are being achieved.
The latest revision of SG4 has seen the
documented being updated to reflect
the broadened scope of ‘standard’
scaffolds covered by TG20 and offers
guidance on techniques for the
following scaffolding configurations:
• Chimney scaffolds
• Bridging with beams
• Floor height lifts
• Cantilever scaffolds
• Loading bay gate installation
Training on TG20 and SG4 can be
provided locally, or at a Simian centre.
MANAGEMENT SUPPORT

Scaffold Inspection
Scaffold inspection effectively takes
three forms - handover, statutory and
pro-active. All can assist to satisfy legal
requirements and can be undertaken
independently by Simian.
Statutory Inspection – which is a legal
requirement - is very often carried out
by the scaffolding contractor on behalf
of the client. This arrangement generally
works well until safety and/or quality
issues are raised when it invariably
becomes evident that unbiased and
independent inspection would have
served the purposes of all parties to
far greater effect.
Simian’s team of Scaffold Inspectors
operate on a nationwide basis carrying
out inspections on behalf of scaffolding
contractors and their clients. All of
our Inspectors are CISRS qualified
Scaffolders and holders of Advanced
Scaffold Inspection certification and all
are holders of, or are working towards
the NEBOSH certificate.
Scaffold Audit
Similar to scaffold inspection but
usually carried out in greater depth,
scaffold audit is used to provide a
measure of the quality of scaffolding,
the performance of the scaffolding
contractors, or to identify areas for
improvement.
Simian’s experience in work of this
nature has taken in several continents
across a whole host of industry
sectors. From petrochemical sites
to power generation, defence, ship
building, construction, pharmaceutical,
rail, nuclear and heavy engineering
environments, our audits can be tailored
to meet specific client demands.
Supply Chain Support
Many organisations find they lack the
time and trade-specific expertise to
adequately assess the capability of
prospective scaffolding suppliers to
undertake work in a safe and competent
manner. Simian has a track record
of undertaking these assessments
and aiding in the discharging of legal
obligations, such as those defined
within the CDM Regulations.
Our pre-qualification audit processes
are bespoke to the industry sector in
which they will be applied. Furthermore
our unrivalled experience and expertise
sets us apart in terms of our ability to
deliver a concise and objective account
of a company’s ability to meet the
standards of the sector in which they
will be required to work.

  • 2. www.simian-risk.com We are a health and safety and training consultancy, specialising in scaffolding and working at height. At Simian we have a wealth of talented, qualified and enthusiastic people, who all are directly employed by us and dedicated to service delivery. Our continued success can be measured by the success and safety records of our clients. These two factors are the result of rigorously maintained high standards, unrivalled pragmatism, and ultimately the commitment of our people. We are guided by a simple philosophy, strong values and high ethical standards, and we strive to give added value in everything we do. From our head office in the North West of England, we service a worldwide client base and contracts in Africa, the Middle East, Europe and the UK, our position as world leaders on all matters scaffolding is reaffirmed by the high levels of repeat business we enjoy. HOW CAN WE HELP YOU? 1
  • 3. www.simian-risk.com Ian Fyall (CMIOSH) Ian started his career as a driver and labourer and has progressed through the ranks to Overseas Operations Director. Ian is an active member of numerous construction industry health and safety interest groups and has several published trade articles to his name. He takes an active interest in legislative matters which is borne out by the number of expert witness cases he has been involved in. He also has an incredible memory! Ian looks after Simian’s overseas work and spends most of his time based at our Middle East office. To relax he likes to travel even further afield and when he’s not working he can be found on the terraces at Blackpool FC supporting the Seasiders. Simon Hughes (CMIOSH) Simon is the Group’s Managing Director and is widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading scaffolding safety advisors. Simon’s scaffolding career began in the mid 1990’s with one of the country’s largest independently owned scaffolding firms. He is acknowledged as the technical author of several of the UK’s foremost scaffolding guidance documents including SG4:15, (Preventing Falls in Scaffolding Operations) and SG6:15 (Manual Handling in the Scaffolding Industry). Simon sits on the National Access and Scaffolding Confederation’s Health and Safety Committee and speaks at conferences and events across the world. He is regularly published in trade journals such as Construction News and SHP and has significant experience of Expert Witness work. Simon is a keen cyclist and spends his spare time clad in lycra speeding along the highways and byways of his native North Wales. THE PEOPLE THAT SUPPORT YOUR SAFETY 2
  • 4. www.simian-risk.com Dave Randles (CMIOSH) Dave is responsible for the operational side of Simian’s UK business. Dave has over 27 years’ experience in the scaffolding industry fulfilling a whole host of roles from Scaffolder to Safety Officer to Contracts Manager to his current position of UK Operations Director. Dave maintains a hands on role in the business and is Account Manager for many of the company’s retained clients. The wealth of experience Dave has garnered in the rail, power generation and industrial sectors means he is Simian’s expert in these fields. As with his partners, Dave also acts as an Expert Witness. He has written articles for several trade publications and when not busy earning a living, he works hard at maintaining his single figure golf handicap and supporting his beloved Everton FC. Susan Russell (Grad IOSH, PIEMA) Susan has progressed from being an admin assistant to overseeing all training, consultancy and administrative activities within the business. Susan, a native Glaswegian, has a flair for most things that she takes on and that has resulted in her fast progression within the business. Her enviable administrative skills and keen eye for detail has seen her evolve to be our resident systems expert and has assisted numerous clients with the implementation and accreditation in a whole host of systems including RISQS, ISO Standards (9001,14001 & OHSAS 18001) and HSG65 systems. Susan sits on the Executive Committee of the North West Construction Safety Group (a voluntary role) and as well as being Simian’s Environmental Practitioner (for Simian and clients), she is well on her way to becoming a Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. Susan has spent time living in both New Zealand and Spain and the latter saw her becoming proficient in the Spanish language. She has maintained the travel bug and when not abroad, her leisure time is spent walking the Cumbrian fells. ALL OF OUR TEAM ARE SCAFFOLDING PEOPLE 3
  • 6. www.simian-risk.com TG20 The TG20 series has grown to be the UK’s most authoritative guidance on scaffolding configurations. TG20 is widely recognised as the default standard for tube and fitting scaffolds constructed in the UK and is the ‘go to’ document for enforcement authorities and other industry stakeholders. TG20 benchmarks the configurations of scaffolding required to ensure compliance with Schedule 3 of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and it is imperative that those involved in scaffolding operations, from both a client and supplier perspective, have a sound understanding of the implications and responsibilities it brings. Our understanding of the scaffolding industry and the standards that sit behind TG20, mean that we are ideally placed to offer advice, guidance and training on its practical application. SG4:15 SG4:15 – Preventing Falls in Scaffolding Operations is arguably the NASC’s most widely recognised guidance document and has evolved significantly over the past 20 years or so. SG4 is widely regarded across industry as the single biggest influence in improved scaffolding safety performance over the past few decades. It continues to recognise technological advancements in providing best practice principles and techniques for those responsible for erecting, modifying and dismantling scaffolding. Compliance with SG4 does not only ensure Scaffolder safety, it also provides those responsible for managing scaffold activity with reassurance that the standards demanded by statutory requirements are being achieved. The latest revision of SG4 has seen the documented being updated to reflect the broadened scope of ‘standard’ scaffolds covered by TG20 and offers guidance on techniques for the following scaffolding configurations: • Chimney scaffolds • Bridging with beams • Floor height lifts • Cantilever scaffolds • Loading bay gate installation Training on TG20 and SG4 can be provided locally, or at a Simian centre. MANAGEMENT SUPPORT 6
  • 7. www.simian-risk.com Scaffold Inspection Scaffold inspection effectively takes three forms - handover, statutory and pro-active. All can assist to satisfy legal requirements and can be undertaken independently by Simian. Statutory Inspection – which is a legal requirement - is very often carried out by the scaffolding contractor on behalf of the client. This arrangement generally works well until safety and/or quality issues are raised when it invariably becomes evident that unbiased and independent inspection would have served the purposes of all parties to far greater effect. Simian’s team of Scaffold Inspectors operate on a nationwide basis carrying out inspections on behalf of scaffolding contractors and their clients. All of our Inspectors are CISRS qualified Scaffolders and holders of Advanced Scaffold Inspection certification and all are holders of, or are working towards the NEBOSH certificate. Scaffold Audit Similar to scaffold inspection but usually carried out in greater depth, scaffold audit is used to provide a measure of the quality of scaffolding, the performance of the scaffolding contractors, or to identify areas for improvement. Simian’s experience in work of this nature has taken in several continents across a whole host of industry sectors. From petrochemical sites to power generation, defence, ship building, construction, pharmaceutical, rail, nuclear and heavy engineering environments, our audits can be tailored to meet specific client demands. Supply Chain Support Many organisations find they lack the time and trade-specific expertise to adequately assess the capability of prospective scaffolding suppliers to undertake work in a safe and competent manner. Simian has a track record of undertaking these assessments and aiding in the discharging of legal obligations, such as those defined within the CDM Regulations. Our pre-qualification audit processes are bespoke to the industry sector in which they will be applied. Furthermore our unrivalled experience and expertise sets us apart in terms of our ability to deliver a concise and objective account of a company’s ability to meet the standards of the sector in which they will be required to work. SCAFFOLD INSPECTION, SCAFFOLD AUDIT, SUPPLY CHAIN SUPPORT 7

  • 9. www.simian-risk.com SIPS and PQQ Assistance Simian has developed relationships with hundreds of client companies in many different industry sectors and is ideally placed to offer advice and assistance to help you meet pre-qualification requirements, and also for completion of associated documentation. We have a demonstrable track record in guiding scaffold companies of all sizes through the PQQ (Pre-Qualification Questionnaires) and capability assessment processes of virtually all of the UK’s major construction and heavy engineering businesses, including Carillion, Balfour Beatty, Laing O’Rourke, Kier, BAE, and Skanska. The same levels of experience and expertise extend to the various SIPS (Safety in Procurement Schemes) that are currently operating in the UK, including Achilles Building Confidence, RISQS, CHAS, Construction Line, SMAS and Safe Contractor. We have assisted countless clients in securing accreditation in almost every construction accreditation scheme. NASC Membership An ever-increasing number of construction companies are insisting that scaffolding suppliers are NASC members prior to awarding scaffolding contracts. Our unrivalled knowledge of NASC audit requirements means that we are ideally placed to assist with membership applications. After initial contact has been made, our consultant visits the company to undertake a gap analysis and provides a full written independent report on areas of recommended improvement. The results of our pre-NASC audit assistance speak for themselves and we are happy to provide references for those we have assisted. Please note that this is a consultancy service provided directly by Simian Risk Management and is in no way affiliated to the NASC. SIPS AND PQQ ASSISTANCE, AND NASC AUDIT 9
