This poem explores the pain of silence in a relationship and the anxiety it causes. The speaker felt they understood their partner more than their partner understood them. The waiting for a response during periods of silence was a punishment that made the speaker feel unworthy and abandoned. While they tried to explain how silence affected them, their partner did not seem to understand or acknowledge their feelings. The silence left the speaker with only their thoughts and feelings of pain.

You didn't see the impact of silence, The waiting for a response. Silence is a punishment. It is abandonment to me. It means that i am not enough. Is that what i deserve? I tried to explain in words, Then i tried to write it down, But, there are no words to explain You needed to see to understand. I don't believe You ever saw, That You ever felt my pain. It was never the expected silence, That came at end of year. It was always the waiting, Those silent three days. The hours of not knowing If You were hurt or not. Silence fanned the flame of fear, It tripled the pain and sorrow. You didn't think to let me know When in an area of no signal. You never saw the consequences. Yet when i attempted to say Silence came by return; The trivia of the day. No acceptance or acknowledgement Of what i had to say. It wouldn't have been so bad If the beginning wasn't so different. Tick tock, tick tock, Nothing more was needed. A phone call out of the blue. Did You start to take me for granted? Did You feel it didn't matter? I was Yours, body and soul. No need to chase and romance. What is left though, Once the romance stops? Was i an obligation, Something You couldn't finish? What of, " We will get through this together"? Where is the together now? What am i left with? Silence....
