Content:The fact that we see herarms movingfastshow
the audience thatshe isrunningfasterand gettingeither
furtherintothe woodsor furthertowardsthe exit.
 Mise en scene – Firstsetting we see is in a secluded woodland area, the setting that we
see does connote horror becauseit looks a little scary. The characters costumelooks like
workoutclothes if it’s cold and we also may think this becauseof her sweatpatches and
the fact that she is running, it does not really connote the genre of the film. Lighting is
very low key and the look of it all suggests that this part is set in the early hours of the
morning.
 Sound – The sounds used are not that interesting due to the fact that it’s the same
background music and nothing else is added throughoutthe firsttwo minutes. The
background music used has an eerie feel to it and its very mysterious, this may be to help
the audience gain some ideas on what the film will be like.
 Editing – The editing is varied, there is a tracking shotused up until shot 12 then a jump
cut to the back of the character and whilstshe is running the tracking is shown this is to
create tension and make the audience feel uneasy, which links to the genre of the film.
The editing is fastpaced to match the characters fastpaced actions (jogging in a secluded
area) could also relate to the characters heartbeat.
 Camera Shots – The camera shots are varied throughout the first two minutes. Allot of wide shots are
used and long shots, this may be to represent the horror in the setting. Also the shots used give the
audience a clear view of who this character is and what she is wearing etc.
 Representation: Not much is shown throughoutthe firsttwo minutes that can be seen as
a representation of something.
 Genre: The genre is horror/thriller. I believe that this is clearly shown due to the scary
looking setting and the thrilling background music that is used. The character does not
really connote horror, in my opinion, because she is in normalclothes that someone
would wear on a morning workout, although the fact that sheis in the middle of this
scary forestmay suggestsomething will happen to her or may suggestthat something in
this film will happen in a secluded area.
 Stereotypes/Ideology: A stereotypemay be that the woman is on her own in a secluded,
scary looking area and this happens quiet allot in most horror/thriller films with women,
typically at the startof one, so seeing this could be uneasy for the audience as they
wonder if anything is going to happen to her.
 Theories and theorists: TheoristStephen Prince states that “like other genre movies, any
given horror film will convey synchronic association, ideological, and socialmessages that
are a part of a certain period or historical moment. One can analysefilms in terms of
these periods or moments, much like they can do with gangster movies. But unlike this
genre, horror also goes deeper, to explore more fundamental questions about the nature
of human existence, and other questions that, in someprofound ways, go beyond culture
and society as these are organized in any given form or period.” From this, we
understand that Prince feels that the horror genreis an elite genrewithin the field of
film, as it is the mostrealistic, and some of concepts and ideas placed into films in the
genre are relative to ‘real life’.
