 Mise en scene – Duringthe firsttwo minutes, the lightingisverylow keywhichsuggests darkness throughoutthe

the fact that it iseverydayclothingmayinsteadinfluence the ideathatthiscouldhappentoa personwitha

we do not see ‘Elise’s’facial expressionwe know thatthe situationisbadandshe wants the itfixed. The female
character inthe house hasa natural look, with hermakeupbeingverylightandherhair not lookingstyled, this
connotesthattheywant herto be shownas stressed,anxiousandoveralldistressed.
 Sound – The soundismixedbetweenitbeingloudatthe beginningupuntil 56 secondsthensuddenlystopsto

 Editing– Duringthe institutions/productionsthe editingismostlyfixedonfading, atthe end of the firstinstitution

 CameraShots – The camerashotsare variedduringthe firsttwo minutes, the firstshotsbeingwide, thisisup
until 45 seconds, fromthenonthe shotsbecome more varied.A midshotof a chair movingaroundinthe air is
used, as well asa longshotof the room (whichcouldalsorelate towide shot, asthe shotis wide) thenanother
midshot of a little girl andthenfinallyawide shot showingthe name of the final production.Afterthe
productions,the wide shotscontinueupuntil ‘Shot-9’thenalongshotisintroduced.The camerashotsusedare
mosteffective because we cansee whatneedstobe seen, like the productionsandthe credits, alsointhe first
twominutes we are knownof a location, adate and a characters name.
Representation:Ibelievethatgenderisnotreallyrepresentedduringthe firsttwominutesof thisfilm, due tothe fact
that we do notmeetmanyof the characters, to be exact:twofemale characters.Icouldpointout that the femaleshairis
downand she looksverydistressed, asdomostfemalesinahorror film. She maybe a single mother, due tothe ideaof
heransweringthe dooralone ,alsoinherdialogue she statesshe hasa day jobbutraisingherson isa ‘nightjob’this
supportsthe ideathat inmosthorror filmsthe female charactershave todeal withmostthingsonby themselves.
Mothersthat are representedinmosthorrorfilmsare shownasscared, unsure onwhat to do,inneedof helpby
someone else, whereas mostFatherCharactersare shownas the brave, uncowardlyandknowledgeablepeople incertain
situations.A perfectexample wouldbe inthisfilmasthe fatherisbrave whereasthe motherisinneedof help.
Genre: The genre is horror, but I believe we are not aware of this during the first two minutes; there are no real
clues into making us believe that this filmis in fact a horror. The only clue that I could find was the uneasy,
disturbing sound we hear during the credits being shown before the film has opened with its first scene. The
dark colours used may also help support the audience to believe that the genre is horror. One of the
productions ‘BLUMHOUSE PRODUCTIONS’ gives a very uneasy feeling due to the heavy (worried) breathing that
is used as the background sound which is also combined with the heart pounding sound, as the sounds get
more frequent so does the audiences anxiety. We then see a sinister looking little girl who looks almost evil,
with her dark, scrawny looking hair which clashes with her pure white dress, so this adds to the uneasy feeling
that is already in the audience’s thoughts.
Stereotypes/ Ideology: The stereotypes of woman are clearly shown throughout the first two minutes of this
film. The facts that the woman or mother is in need of desperate help is telling the audience that a single
mother cannot cope with this kind of situation on her own. Also the fact that she is a female in a horror film
highlights the stereotype that she as the woman is in desperate need of help and she is seen as vulnerable due
to her desperate need to help her son overcome what is happening to him.
Theories and theorists: Theorist Stephen Prince states that “like other genre movies, any given horror film will
convey synchronic association, ideological, and social messages that are a part of a certain period or historical
moment. One can analyse films in terms of these periods or moments, much like they can do with gangster
movies. But unlike this genre, horror also goes deeper, to explore more fundamental questions about the
nature of human existence, and other questions that, in some profound ways, go beyond culture and society as
these are organized in any given form or period.” From this, we understand that Prince feels that the horror
genre is an elite genre within the field of film, as it is the most realistic, and some of concepts and ideas placed
into films in the genre are relative to ‘real life’.
Stage 6 Films is a label created by Sony Pictures Worldwide
Acquisitions in fall 2007 that acquires, produces and
distributes 10–15 low budget (capped at approximately $10
million) films and direct-to-DVD releases per year. It is
Columbia TriStar's fifth specialty label. Overall, it is the
seventh theatrical label by Sony Pictures. The label takes its
name from the location of its main office, the Stage 6
building at Sony Pictures Studios (originally an actual sound
stage used for such films as The Wizard of Oz).[1][2] Adrian
Alperovich, Senior Executive Vice President and General
Manager of the Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions
Group, said Stage 6's slate will mostly be geared toward
ancillary markets, but the label will also release some of the
titles theatrically through Sony's distribution labels (mostly
TriStar Pictures) and other companies like Samuel Goldwyn
Films and FilmDistrict. Sony Pictures Worldwide
Acquisitions will determine whether a Stage 6 title bows
theatrically after the film has been made.

  • 4. Representation:Ibelievethatgenderisnotreallyrepresentedduringthe firsttwominutesof thisfilm, due tothe fact that we do notmeetmanyof the characters, to be exact:twofemale characters.Icouldpointout that the femaleshairis downand she looksverydistressed, asdomostfemalesinahorror film. She maybe a single mother, due tothe ideaof heransweringthe dooralone ,alsoinherdialogue she statesshe hasa day jobbutraisingherson isa ‘nightjob’this supportsthe ideathat inmosthorror filmsthe female charactershave todeal withmostthingsonby themselves. Mothersthat are representedinmosthorrorfilmsare shownasscared, unsure onwhat to do,inneedof helpby someone else, whereas mostFatherCharactersare shownas the brave, uncowardlyandknowledgeablepeople incertain situations.A perfectexample wouldbe inthisfilmasthe fatherisbrave whereasthe motherisinneedof help. Genre: The genre is horror, but I believe we are not aware of this during the first two minutes; there are no real clues into making us believe that this filmis in fact a horror. The only clue that I could find was the uneasy, disturbing sound we hear during the credits being shown before the film has opened with its first scene. The dark colours used may also help support the audience to believe that the genre is horror. One of the productions ‘BLUMHOUSE PRODUCTIONS’ gives a very uneasy feeling due to the heavy (worried) breathing that is used as the background sound which is also combined with the heart pounding sound, as the sounds get more frequent so does the audiences anxiety. We then see a sinister looking little girl who looks almost evil, with her dark, scrawny looking hair which clashes with her pure white dress, so this adds to the uneasy feeling that is already in the audience’s thoughts. Stereotypes/ Ideology: The stereotypes of woman are clearly shown throughout the first two minutes of this film. The facts that the woman or mother is in need of desperate help is telling the audience that a single mother cannot cope with this kind of situation on her own. Also the fact that she is a female in a horror film highlights the stereotype that she as the woman is in desperate need of help and she is seen as vulnerable due to her desperate need to help her son overcome what is happening to him. Theories and theorists: Theorist Stephen Prince states that “like other genre movies, any given horror film will convey synchronic association, ideological, and social messages that are a part of a certain period or historical moment. One can analyse films in terms of these periods or moments, much like they can do with gangster movies. But unlike this genre, horror also goes deeper, to explore more fundamental questions about the nature of human existence, and other questions that, in some profound ways, go beyond culture and society as these are organized in any given form or period.” From this, we understand that Prince feels that the horror genre is an elite genre within the field of film, as it is the most realistic, and some of concepts and ideas placed into films in the genre are relative to ‘real life’.
  • 5. Stage 6 Films is a label created by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions in fall 2007 that acquires, produces and distributes 10–15 low budget (capped at approximately $10 million) films and direct-to-DVD releases per year. It is Columbia TriStar's fifth specialty label. Overall, it is the seventh theatrical label by Sony Pictures. The label takes its name from the location of its main office, the Stage 6 building at Sony Pictures Studios (originally an actual sound stage used for such films as The Wizard of Oz).[1][2] Adrian Alperovich, Senior Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group, said Stage 6's slate will mostly be geared toward ancillary markets, but the label will also release some of the titles theatrically through Sony's distribution labels (mostly TriStar Pictures) and other companies like Samuel Goldwyn Films and FilmDistrict. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions will determine whether a Stage 6 title bows theatrically after the film has been made. ‘FilmDistrictisa leadingindependentdistribution,acquisition,co- productionandfeature filmfinancingentity, designedtobring commerciallyviable filmstotargetedaudiencesacrossthe United States.
