Telegraphic Summary Instructions:
1. This document contains a copy of Jeffrey Bartholet’s Scientific American
article, “Inside the Meat Lab.” Read Bartholet’s article carefully and
thoroughly.
2. I have left two inches of margin on the left side of the page. Print out a
copy of the document and use this space to provide a telegraphic
summary (i.e., writing the key words summarizing each paragraph) in the
margin. THESE SUMMARIES SHOULD REFLECT YOUR COMPREHENSION
OF EACH PARAGRAPH AND YOUR OWN ARTICULATION OF THE IDEAS.
Before you begin, review the characteristics of effective telegraphic
summary (PPT: “Telegraphic Summary: A Tool for Effective Reading
Retention”).
Remember that your goal is to capture, in as few words as
possible, the main point of each paragraph. When you are
finished, you should be able to scan quickly down through your
list of keywords and recite the content of the article.
3. At the end of the article, write a cohesive and carefully-proofread
paragraph (150-250 words) in which you summarize the content of the
entire article in your own words.
4. Remember: you will submit this homework as a printed document in
class.

It is not unusual for visionaries to be
impassioned, if not fanatical, and Willem
van Eelen is no exception. At 87, van Eelen
can look back on an extraordinary life. He
was born in Indonesia when it was under Dutch control, the son of a doctor who
ran a leper colony. As a teenager, he fought the Japanese in World War II and
spent several years in prisoner-of-war camps. The Japanese guards used
prisoners as slave labor and starved them. "If one of the stray dogs was stupid
enough to go over the wire, the prisoners would jump on it, tear it apart and eat
it raw," van Eelen recalls. "If you looked at my stomach then, you saw my spine. I
was already dead." The experience triggered a lifelong obsession with food,
nutrition and the science of survival.
One obsession led to another. After the Allies liberated Indonesia, van Eelen
studied medicine at the University of Amsterdam. A professor showed the
students how he had been able to get a piece of muscle tissue to grow in the
laboratory. This demonstration inspired van Eelen to consider the possibility of
growing edible meat without having to raise or slaughter animals. Imagine, he

Rifkin, “A Change of Heart about Animals”
They are more like us than we imagined, scientists are finding
Jeremy Rifkin, Los Angeles Times, September 1, 2003. Rifkin is an American economist whose work explores the way science and technological change influence the economy, jobs, culture, and the environment. In a 1989 interview published in Time Magazine, Rifkin argues against some technologies, claiming that in America,[w]e’re so skewed toward efficiency that we’ve lost our sense of humanity. What we need to do is to bring back a sense of the sacred.”
[1] Though much of big science has centered on breakthroughs in biotechnology, nanotechnology and more esoteric questions like the age of our universe, a quieter story has been unfolding behind the scenes in laboratories around the world — one whose effect on human perception and our understanding of life is likely to be profound.
[2] What these researchers are finding is that many of our fellow creatures are more like us than we had ever imagined. They feel pain, suffer and experience stress, affection, excitement and even love — and these findings are changing how we view animals.
[3] Strangely enough, some of the research sponsors are fast food purveyors, such as McDonald's, Burger King and KFC. Pressured by animal rights activists and by growing public support for the humane treatment of animals, these companies have financed research into, among other things, the emotional, mental and behavioral states of our fellow creatures.
[4] Studies on pigs' social behavior funded by McDonald's at Purdue University, for example, have found that they crave affection and are easily depressed if isolated or denied playtime with each other. The lack of mental and physical stimuli can result in deterioration of health.
[5] The European Union has taken such studies to heart and outlawed the use of isolating pig stalls by 2012. In Germany, the government is encouraging pig farmers to give each pig 20 seconds of human contact each day and to provide them with toys to prevent them from fighting.
[6] Other funding sources have fueled the growing field of study into animal emotions and cognitive abilities.
[7] Researchers were stunned recently by findings (published in the journal Science) on the conceptual abilities of New Caledonian crows. In controlled experiments, scientists at Oxford University reported that two birds named Betty and Abel were given a choice between using two tools, one a straight wire,
the other a hooked wire, to snag a piece of meat from inside a tube. Both chose the hooked wire. Abel,
the more dominant male, then stole Betty's hook, leaving her with only a straight wire. Betty then used her beak to wedge the straight wire in a crack and bent it with her beak to produce a hook. She then snagged the food from inside the tube. Researchers repeated the experiment and she fashioned a hook
out of the wire nine of out of 10 times.

Birdwatching or birding means going

It is a popular hobby.

5. Socio-psychology
A study of the motivations for birdwatching in New York concluded that initial
motivations were largely similar in males and females, but males who
participate actively in birding are more motivated by "sharing knowledge" with
others, and active female birders are more motivated by their "intellectual"
interest in studying birds, and by the "challenge" of identifying new and rare
birds and improving their skills. A study suggests that males leaned towards
competitive birding while females preferred recreational birdwatching. While
the representation of women has always been low, it has been pointed out that
nearly 90% of all birdwatchers in the United States are white with only a few
African Americans
Other minority groups have formed organizations to support fellow birders and
these include the Gay birders and the Disabled Birders Association.
The study of birdwatching has been of interest to students of the sociology of
science
Silence Birdwatching
6. Famous birdwatchers
There are about 10,000 species of bird and only a small number of
people have seen more than 7000. Many birdwatchers have spent their
entire lives trying to see all the bird species of the world. The first
person who started this is said to be Stuart Keith.
In 2012 Tom Gullick, an Englishman who lives in Spain, became the first
birdwatcher to log over 9,000 species. In 2008 two British birders, Alan
Davies and Ruth Miller, gave up their jobs, sold their home and put
everything they owned into a year-long global birdwatching adventure
about which they a wrote a book called "The Biggest Twitch". They
logged their 4431st species on 31 October 2008.
Birdwatching literature, field guides and television programs have been
popularized by birders like Pete Dunne and Bill Oddie.
