  1. ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILIY
  2. Title Slide Env. Sus.“At the core of sustainability is the desire to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. As our youth are those most impacted by our decisions today, giving them the power to shape their futures now is the ultimate goal for SIFE Simon Fraser’s environmental sustainability program.”---Header: Environmental SustainabilityCollage of Banner Bags and New LeafPrevented 9,740lbs of CO2 EmissionsFreed 749 trees from the CO2 EmissionsImpacted 407 Students Towards a More Environmentally-Friendly Future“Our Environmental Sustainability program was launched in Spring of 2009. Since then, it has grown significantly. As a result of our projects, we have helped prevent the equivalent of almost 10,000 (9,740) lbs of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, and also freed over 700 (749) trees from having to process those emissions. We're proud to say that we've impacted over 400 (407) students across Metro Vancouver towards a more environmental-friendly future. (need a better ending that "to ensure a strong future")”

Before we introduce our projects, we'd like to give you a little background about ourselves first. My name is Jennifer Ball. I'm a third year Business student at Simon Fraser University, as well as currently a Project Manager in SIFE Simon Fraser with Student Entrepreneur Today. Joseph: And I am Joseph Choi, a third year student concentrating in Business and Interactive Technology. With our community involvement with SIFE, it has not only enriched our university experience, but have also given us that opportunity to give back to the community and take pride in making a difference.Jennifer: Joining us on tech is Jennifer Lui, who is in her second year studying  Interactive Arts and Technology.”

However, we saw a problem when we realized that while today's students were being taught the importance of sustainability, their lessons were cut short of real-life application. ”

These projects aim to teach students to take a hands-on approach to environmental sustainability and inspire them to continue Vancouver's eco-friendly prestige into the future. Our first project is Banner Bags, and with this, we've travelled to 8 schools across BC, directly impacting over 12 classrooms.”

Prevented 388 lbs of nylon from entering our landfillsT“Joseph: We presented workshops where we talked to students about different opportunities to integrate environmental sustainability into their everyday lives. Students were led through the product life cycle analysis to see how materials move from production to the garbage, and the preventative measures that we can take to stop needless waste. The Banner Bags project prevented over 380 (388) lbs of nylon from entering our landfills by taking 157 recycled banners to our local high school sewing classes. Each banner was turned into two reusable tote bags.
  9. Header:Banner BrainstormPicture of Winner“We even started a contest named Banner Brainstorm, where we encouraged students to creatively innovate their own products and designs. With $150 as the prize, the eventual winner was a student from Fraser Heights who sewed her banner into a full outfit.”

This project was a fundraising charity that focused on helping underprivileged high school students get access to the things they'll need for their graduation like dresses, suits, and accessories. The students were able to sell more than _________, helping them raise more than _________ dollars.”

Banner Bags saved the equivalent energy to what it would take to power a typical Vancouver home for more than 13 months! In addition, this project also saved the BBBB Company and DSBIA over $1,000 in inventory holding cost. So who says you can’t make something from nothing?

In this package, it includes instructions, feedback forms and measurement reports so that teachers may deliver the workshops themselves in their classrooms after communicating with a SIFE team member to transport the tools and resources to them. This established package has allowed the project to expand outside of just local high schools.”
  14. Fade InHeader: SIFE LogoNew Leaf Logo in Center of Page“Jennifer: Our second project, New Leaf, recently underwent a branding change. While it began in March of 2009 as SIFE Kids, we found out that 13 year olds don't like being called "Kids". Fortunately, they liked the content, which has remained the same. New Leaf introduces Grade 7 students to environmental issues and what they can do to make a positive change. The project challenges students to think about ways to reduce their own consumption of energy and water in their everyday activities. They are encouraged to apply their knowledge to influence their friends and families to make eco-friendly decisions by writing articles about an environmental topic of their interest ranging from pine beetles to climate change. ”

The online magazine was viewed over 250 times on the SIFE Simon Fraser website within a month.  From the words of the students themselves, New Leaf has given them the opportunity to learn to “recycle more and educate others”.”

  18. Header: New Leaf Logo*Similar to Chantelle’s chart*Criteria for New Leaf will show up one at a time (criteria 1+2), then move onto Banner Bags criteria one at a time (criteria 1+2), then Criteria 3 shows up for both projects (since they’re both the same description)Criterion New Leaf Banner BagsCriterion 1Create Economic Opportunity Students take home the knowledge from our Our project saved two companies inventory workshops so they can start conserving energy today holding cost, and students became green entrepreneurs in fundraising for their schools or third party charities.Criterion 2Develop Environmental Awareness Students learn that their current decisions can The workshops created an understanding affect their environment on both a local and global scale of product life cycle management, and the economic benefits of sustainability.Criterion 3Ensure Long-Term Sustainability The program ensures its long-term survival through its continual documentation, well-trained Project Managers, and its Teacher’s Package for future expansion.“Jennifer: Our sustainability program reflects how strongly Vancouver believes in preserving our environment. New Leaf meets the first criteria by allowing students to take home the knowledge and energy saving techniques that they learned in our workshops home so that can start saving money on their energy bills. To meet the second criteria, the project places an emphasis on increasing students awareness about how their current decisions are affecting their environment on both a local and global scale. These students are the business leaders of tomorrow. We feel that by shifting them to an eco-friendly mindset today, we can hope to see sustainable business habits in the future.”Joseph: Banner Bags is the perfect example of the first criteria showing that sustainability can be used to our economic benefit. Not only did our workshops create an understanding of product life cycle management, but we were able to save the DSBIA and Big Bold Beautiful Banner Company inventory holding cost. Aligning with the second criteria, our students were given first hand experience as green entrepreneurs as they were able to use their bags to help fundraise for their schools or third party charities.Jennifer: SIFE Simon Fraser's environmental sustainability program ensures its survival in the long-term through its continual documentation. Both the New Leaf and Banner Bags projects are so thoroughly documented online that they can be easily transferred from one team to another. Our site includes documents like contact information, powerpoints, lesson plans, and allows project managers to easily continue the development of the workshop content and add improvements. We thoroughly train our project managers about the entire process so they can take on their position with confidence. We also give all the teachers we work with a feature package that contains all the necessary information so they can run the program for future classes. At SIFE Simon Fraser, we believe that we can enrich our programs by having a diverse student-base, so we look to recruit students from all of our faculties.”
  19. No HeaderSIFE Simon Fraser Logo“We Dare to do”*Show words when I say it at the end“Joseph: At SIFE Simon Fraser, we’re taking steps to make a real difference in our communities to shape the future that we want to see. And as one student said best, “It’s the small things that make a huge difference” and it has really been all the small things that have made Vancouver into the most sustainable city in Canada. Jennifer: At SIFE Simon Fraser: we go beyond  Joseph: We dare to do.”
