Sidney Lewis (1903-1969) was the youngest British soldier to fight in World War I. He ran away from home at age 12 to enlist in the British army. Lewis fought in the Battle of the Somme in 1916 but was sent home in 1917 after his mother provided his birth certificate to prove he was underage. Though stories of his service were published at the time, they were not verified until recently. Lewis demonstrated strong nationalism by wanting to fight for his country at a young age, but was ultimately deemed too young for battle by the British military.
