Knowledge Graph Conference 2021
Semantic MediaWiki (SMW), which was introduced as early as in 2006, has since gone on to establish a vital community and is currently one of the few semantic wiki solutions still in existence. SMW is an extension of MediaWiki, the software used for Wikipedia and many other projects, resulting in a largely sustainable codebase and ecosystem. There are many reasons why SMW should not be overlooked by the knowledge graph community:
SMW is capable of directly connecting to several triple stores (Blazegraph, Virtuoso, Jena), which is why it can be considered an interface for entering data into knowledge graphs.
SMW can use its internal relational database (or ElasticSearch), enabling users to build simple knowledge graphs without in-depth knowledge about triple stores.
SMW has the built-in capability of exporting to RDF including building complete RDF data dumps that can be imported into existing knowledge graphs.
SMW has the capability to reuse existing ontologies by importing vocabularies and providing unique identifiers.
The explicit semantic content of Semantic MediaWiki is formally interpreted in the OWL DL ontology language and is made available in XML/RDF format.
A simple internal query language is available to query the internal knowledge graph from within SMW, without the requirement of having a SPARQL endpoint. However, extensions for implementing SPARQL in SMW are available as well.
SMW has the capability to enable data curation for experienced users responsible for the ontology as well as simple form-based input for regular users that can easily populate the KG with data.
There are several approaches to visualizing data in SMW, thus making the knowledge graph visible and interactive.
Implementing custom ontologies in SMW is quite easy, everything is built-in wiki pages (e.g. definition of properties and datatypes, forms and templates).
SMW has low barriers to implementation as it is a clean extension to MediaWiki, which is PHP software running on regular web hosts.
In the talk, I will give an overview of the mentioned aspects and highlight some main differences to Wikibase – which is an alternative approach for managing structured data in MediaWiki – as well as the current limitations of SMW.
Visualising Legal Meaning in Legal Informatics. Workshop DatAMSS 2014 presen...Vytautas Čyras
Workshop DatAMSS 2014 presentation, http://www.mii.lt/DatAMSS/
ABSTRACT: This presentation is about visualization in the domain of legal informatics. We propose an approach to visualization which is called sequential legal visualization (SLV). It is about a sequence of images which facilitates the comprehension of the meaning of legal contents. Visualising legal meaning differs from data visualization and information visualization and is relevant to knowledge visualization. A sequence of images in SLV can be compared with a narrative. There is a link to focus+context techniques in information visualization.
Pictures in law bring a risk of drawbacks, such as redundancy, a low level of abstraction, trivialization, and emotions. However, the use of logical pictures can bring advantages because metaphors and symbols can be employed.
Visualization is important as tertium comparationis. This is important more generally – for multilingual scientific communities – and not only in legal informatics. Tertium comparationis (Latin – the third [part] of the comparison) is the quality that two things that are being compared have in common. Different languages can be used in a multilingual scientific discourse. On the one hand, English, a global language, can be used. Let us call this top-down approach. On the other hand, regional languages, such as German of French, can also be used. Let us call this usage bottom-up approach. The language of a big region (not of a province) allows a scientist to unfold his ideas more naturally. However this brings translation problems. Thus dictionaries and translation tools emerge, e.g. Inter-Active Terminology for Europe (IATE), the inter-institutional terminology database of the European Union (http://iate.europa.eu). Visualization can supplement translation. Examples are books for visualized learning, where illustrations complement translation. Thus visualization brings an additional syntactic dimension to languages.
Next we introduce another concept – tertium communicationis – to denote the third part of the communication between an agent who speaks language A to an agent who speaks B. Besides visualization other intermediate formats such as XML schema can be employed. We aim at a tertium communicationis as a document type definition that improves communication between human beings or machines. The question “What are the formats which contribute to better communication?” depends on various factors, such as document type and the task of communication. Therefore we speak about transitions text-visualization-model-metamodel.

Open standards for linked organisations | meeting Estonia - Flemish Governmen...Raf Buyle
The Flemish Government in Belgium has an interoperability program called Open Standards for Linked Organizations (OSLO), which focuses on both technical and semantical interoperability of data and systems used for (digital) government service delivery.
On the semantical level, information is aligned with European standards (ISA² Core Vocabularies and INSPIRE), enriched by data extensions to comply with the local context. On the technical level, we developed RESTFul APIs which build upon the principles of Linked Data.
The API conforms to the Flemish URI standard1, describing how data resources can be exposed using persistent and “cool” URIs2, in line with international best practices. Because of its extensibility and since it is already a standard for data interchange on the web, Flemish Administrations have chosen the Resource Description Framework (RDF) to facilitate the creation and reuse of machine-readable data.

From Digital Records to Digital Cultural Landscapes. Beyond Digital Library b...4Science
In a Digital Library environment, we can define Digital cultural landscapes as “virtual ecosystems” in which digital cultural heritage subsets are related with entities such as people, places, events, fonds, etc., according to different visions and interpretations, in a pluralism generating new knowledge and opening up new perspectives. These virtual ecosystems today can be easily structured by cultural institutions, using a popular application such as DSpace, the world's most widely used open source Digital Asset Management System.
Extending the DSpace data model and enriching the platform with new features allows, indeed, to go beyond the traditional boundaries of the Digital libraries, structuring a complex system of relationships between entities, to be explored through networks, structured paths and viewers, building new narratives thanks to interdisciplinarity and the coexistence of different domains (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums and even more).
Digital Libraries represent today, at least in the Humanities, the main tools not only for recomposing cultural information, but also for producing new knowledge, provided, however, that they are not mere lists of items grouped into collections, but become tools allowing the definition of relationships on different scales and according to different variability dimensions, in order to reconstruct real digital cultural landscapes within which, for example, a document can be explored and analyzed in relation to other documents and to all the information helping to define its context, or rather its different contexts (historical, geographical, cultural, etc.).
Moreover, since Digital Library requirements are getting complex and complex, to fulfil the needs of the cultural heritage domain, we enhanced our solutions based on DSpace, developing a IIIF ecosystem built on top of three add-ons, the IIIF Image Viewer Mirador, the Document Viewer (for visualizing PDF files within
Mirador) and the OCR module (for extracting text from images and indexing it).
Nowadays a Digital Library should be able to tell its content in different ways to different audiences. Therefore, we will illustrate what we implemented in DSpace, in order to enhance the storytelling and communication capabilities of the Digital Library.

Putting the SPARK into Virtual Training.pptxCynthia Clay
This 60-minute webinar, sponsored by Adobe, was delivered for the Training Mag Network. It explored the five elements of SPARK: Storytelling, Purpose, Action, Relationships, and Kudos. Knowing how to tell a well-structured story is key to building long-term memory. Stating a clear purpose that doesn't take away from the discovery learning process is critical. Ensuring that people move from theory to practical application is imperative. Creating strong social learning is the key to commitment and engagement. Validating and affirming participants' comments is the way to create a positive learning environment.
