This document compares different types of running shoes used for various competitive running events. Trainers are generic shoes that offer support and are heavy, used for training. Cross country spikes have 6 holes for spikes and support for cross country running. Long distance spikes are lighter than trainers or cross country spikes and are used between 1 mile and 10k. Middle distance spikes are very light with 6 toe holes and less support for 400m to 1 mile races. Sprinter spikes contain almost no support and feel like wearing nothing, designed for races under 400 meters.
