This is a ppt describing Shirodhara procedure. It's a minor procedure in Panchkarma and it's beneficial for managing stress and anxiety.
Shirodhara is a procedure in which we put oil in a head from a three to four angulas above.
INTRODUCTION
It is avariety of Murdhni Tail in which medicated oil, milk or buttermilk is poured
in a continuous stretch on the head, especially on forehead.
It has Sedative and soothing effect that’s why ultimate mental and emotional
relaxation therapy.
This helps in proper binding of indriya and vishya.
There are specialized form of Shirodhara called Taildhara, Takradhara,
Ksheerdhara etc.

INDICATIONS
• Stress
• Fatigue
•Insomnia (Sleeping disorders)
• Mood swings
• Premature graying of hairs
• Vata vyadhi
• Facial palsy
• Loss of memory
• Pshychiatric disorders like psychosis, convulsive disorders, epilepsy etc.
• Shirashoola( Headache) related to tension
• Migraine.
• Improves concentration
• Give strength to head and neck.
• Mild Hypertension

CONTRAINDICATIONS
• Kaphaja Vikara(like headache with heaviness, sinusitis)
• Unconsciousness.
• Alcoholism.
• Recent neck injury.
• Pregnancy.
• Excessive anxiety.
• Traumatic brain injury (Any cuts and abrasions on head).
• Full stomach (immediately after meals).

REQUIREMENTS
• Droni –6 by 2 feet wide, 6-9 inches deep
• Dharapatra- 2 ½ litres capacity, wide mouth, hole of little finger size at the bottom.
• Varti (6 angula length) -1
• Suitable oil/ Takra- approx. 1.5 litres.
• Gauze -1
• Cotton earplugs – 2
• Soft pillow-1
• Vessels – 3
• Soft towels – 2
• Therapists- 2
POORVA KARMA
Stools andurine should be voided.
Empty stomach.
Concelling of patient should be done regarding procedure.
Patient made to sleep on dhara table-supine posture.
Abhayanga should be done over the face, neck, shoulder.
Gauge is tied around head above eyebrows of the patient.
After closing the eyes cotton is kept over the eye lids and it should be tied with
proper bandage.
Ear plugs should be applied.
Body draped with cloth.

Room-clean, wellventilated, quiet.
Patient lie in supine position on the Droni with a pillow under neck .
Height of Dharapatra should be fixed such that oil should fall from height
of 3 inches in a countinous stream of little finger thickness.
Oil should be heated just above body temperature ( 38-40*C) and poured
into Dharapatra.
Countinous stream of oil should be allowed to fall on the entire forehead,
while oscillating the Dharapatra to cover the entire head.(uniform
oscillations required for uniform dhara).
Simultaneously massage with other hand should also be done.
The oil/liquid should be recollected from Droni, reheated and poured
back into the Dharapatra.
PRADHAN KARMA

PASCHAT KARMA
Gauze andearplugs should be removed and head must wiped off with towel.
Talam – Rasnadi Churna should be applied over head.
Hot water bath can be done if prescribed, after 1 hr.
Head bath should be done with lukewarm water.
Light diet.

PERIOD OFCHANGING LIQUID-
Milk –daily
Takra -daily
Oil-3 days
DURATION-
45 to 60 min for the required number of days(7,14,21 or 28 days).

PRECAUTIONS
Special care shouldbe taken to prevent falling of the oil into the eyes.
Patient should not sleep during the procedure.
Moderate height, thickness , speed and temperature of the fluid flow should be
maintained.
MANAGEMENT
Stop Shirodharaimmediately.
Check Vitals ( BP, PULSE, TEMPERATURE).
Manage as advised by Ayurvedic Physician.
Ushnaupchara for shivering.

Exposure to cold, sun, dew, wind, smoke or dust
Riding on elephant or horses
Walking, speaking too long or too loud
Day sleep, standing for long period
Advised to use optimum height pillow

Preparation-2 Methods
(A)Takra:1.5 litres of milk diluted with 4 times water is boiled with 100g
of skinned and crushed Musta tied in a muslin bag, and is reduced to the
original quantity of milk. The bag of medicament is taken out and
squeezed well. When cooled, this prepared milk is fermented by the
addition of a little sour buttermilk over night. Next morning the
fermented medicated curd is churned by adding 1500ml of Amalaki
kwatha. The butter is removed completely and this mixture is used for
dhara after filtering.
(B) Amalaki kwatha: 200g of dried Amalaki fruit boiled with 8 litres of
water and reduced to 2 litres.1.5 litres of Amalaki kwatha is used to mix
with buttermilk & 500ml of that is used to wash the head after the
procedure.

INDICATIONS FOR TAKRADHARA
Palitya.
To improve the power of all sensory organs.
Shrama & klama.
Headache (especially with burning sensation).
Lack of vitality.
Pricking pains of palm & soles
Scalp psoriasis
Diseases of eyes, nose, throat and ears
NOTE-
IN SHORT ALL THE PROCEDURES ARE SAME AS SHIRODHARA
BUT TAKRA SHOULD NOT BE HEATED OR REUSED .
18.
COMPLICATIONS AND MANAGEMENT
Coldand cold related symptoms including chills is observed in some
patients due to excess sheeta.
MANAGEMENT-
• Procedure should be stopped immediately and the patient is managed
with Ushnaupachar.
• Talam with Rasnadi Churna should be done.
