Hurricane Katrina caused catastrophic damage to Gunter Library at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in 2005. The library experienced over 30 inches of storm surge flooding that submerged books, furniture, and equipment in marsh muck and water. Library staff and volunteers worked tirelessly for over a month to salvage and clean what they could from the damaged library. Through recovery grants and donations, the library was able to replace lost materials and equipment and reopen in late 2005, though recovery efforts continued for years.
