This document discusses the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean Seascape, which includes several Marine Protected Areas across Costa Rica, Colombia, Ecuador, and Panama that help protect sharks and other marine life. Researchers have tagged hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, and other species within the Galapagos Islands using ultrasonic tags, satellite tags, and manual tracking to learn about their site fidelity, seasonal movements, connectivity between protected areas, and long distance migrations. The tagging data shows these sharks display residency at certain hotspot areas but also move between the Galapagos Islands and as far as Cocos Island and the coasts of Ecuador, demonstrating the regional connectivity of sharks across this Eastern Tropical Pacific seascape.
The document discusses several issues affecting the oceans, including the distribution and decline of coral reefs and various sea creatures. It also examines the impacts of storms and disasters on the low-lying island of Tuvalu, including king tides, storm surge, coastal erosion, and saltwater intrusion threatening its agriculture. Underwater sculpture gardens are highlighted as a way to help protect coral reefs while attracting tourists.

1) The document discusses the opportunity for technology to improve organizational efficiency and transition economies into a "smart and clean world."
2) It argues that aggregate efficiency has stalled at around 22% for 30 years due to limitations of the Second Industrial Revolution, but that digitizing transport, energy, and communication through technologies like blockchain can help manage resources and increase efficiency.
3) Technologies like precision agriculture, cloud computing, robotics, and autonomous vehicles may allow for "dematerialization" and do more with fewer physical resources through effects like reduced waste and need for transportation/logistics infrastructure.
1) Divers in South Africa regularly encounter sevengill sharks in the kelp forests off Miller's Point. The sharks are bold and inquisitive.
2) Researchers are studying these sharks to learn more about their population dynamics, as commercial fishing threatens the species. Divers help by photographing the sharks' unique markings to identify individuals.
3) The area around Miller's Point appears to be an important pupping ground for sevengill sharks, though more research is needed to confirm this. The sharks' long gestation period and late maturity make them vulnerable to overfishing.

This document provides an overview of tiger sharks and new research enhancing understanding of them. It discusses how tiger sharks have an undeserved reputation as man-eaters, and how a research team in South Africa is using tagging and observation to learn about tiger shark behavior, movements, habitat use, and diet. Their findings reveal that tiger sharks play an important role in regulating dolphin populations and consume a wide variety of prey. This research is improving knowledge of tiger sharks and aiding conservation efforts for the species.

The document summarizes a study of two crab species that inhabit Crab Cove in Alameda, CA: the Bay Shore Crab and the Lined Shore Crab. The researcher hypothesized that since there are two crab species, they must occupy different niches. Through transect surveys in muddy and rocky areas, the researcher found that Bay Shore Crabs exclusively inhabited muddy areas under rocks, while Lined Shore Crabs exclusively inhabited rocky areas under rocks and in crevices. This suggests the two species partition resources by inhabiting different habitats to avoid competition. Both crab species feed on algae and diatoms but their niches differ due to habitat specialization in muddy versus rocky environments.
The document discusses the intertidal zones of the California coast and the marine life found there. It describes some of the unique plants and animals that inhabit the tide pools, including sea stars, anemones, fish, sea urchins, and various types of algae. Underwater photography opportunities are also mentioned for observing the abundant marine biodiversity in the kelp forests and reefs off the California coast.

The narwhal is a rarely seen Arctic whale known for the long tooth that males have protruding from their upper jaw. A newborn calf is about 5 feet long and males' teeth can grow to be 7-10 feet long. They live in pods of 2-10 and hunters on Baffin Island hunt them using rifles, though not all whales that are shot are retrieved. Their tusks are valued and sold internationally, providing income for Inuit communities.

Great white sharks are apex predators that can breach out of the water at speeds up to 40 mph to attack seals. Seal Island near Cape Town is home to over 60,000 seals and is frequented by a dozen great whites, making it a place where shark breaching occurs commonly as the sharks hunt the seals. Witnessing shark breaching in their natural habitat from the safety of a shark cage is an opportunity offered by tour companies like Extreme Scene, with trips available to Seal Island in False Bay or to Gansbaai, known as the Shark Capital of the World.
This document summarizes archaeological research on Norse settlements in Greenland. It discusses two main Norse settlement areas in Greenland, the Eastern and Western settlements, and excavations at several sites within the Vatnahverfi region of the Eastern Settlement. The excavations uncovered large amounts of archaeofauna, including seal bones. Analysis found changing proportions of seal species over time that may relate to climate change and increasing summer sea ice after 1250 AD, which likely impacted seal populations and farm productivity in the Norse settlements.
The document discusses several bizarre deep sea creatures, including the blobfish, candiru, coelacanth, fangtooth, goblin shark, longnose chimera pup, monkfish, oarfish, northern snakehead, vampire squid, viperfish, bathysaurus, snaggletooth, wolf fish, axolotl, longlure frogfish, fangtooth fish, and deep-sea glass squid. Shark tagging in the galapagos islands 2012
1. The Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean Seascape
Cocos Island (Costa
Rica)
Malpelo Island
(Colombia)
Galapagos Islands
(Ecuador)
Also Coiba & Las Perlas (Panama)
Gorgona (Colombia)
Isla de la Plata, Machalilla (Ecuador)
2.1 million km2
2. Why sharks?
•Sharks are a key group in the marine ecosystem
•Apex predators, drive natural selection processes
•Distinct evolutionary group from bony fishes
•Slow growth, late onset of sexual maturity, low
fecundity – intrinsic characteristics which make sharks
vulnerable.
•Recent studies have shown declines in shark
populations in almost every single population studied
Internal reproduction and live young (mostly).
6. Focus: Research Questions
Nations encouraged to develop Shark Plans of Action to manage and conserve
their shark populations
• How to delimit stocks?
• No baseline from which to follow trends
Do hammerheads display residency at particular
sites?
Do hammerheads move between sites?
Do they display synchronous behavior?
Is their connectivity between MPAs on a regional
scale?
What are the mechanisms behind site preference
and migrations?
7. Shark Tagging: ultrasonic coded tags
VEMCO V16 coded
tags. Emit train of
pulses at 69 KHz.
Tags are attached to darts and placed on pole
spears. Free divers descend onto sharks and VEMCO VR2 listening stations
insert tag behind the dorsal fin, at a distance (and temp logger), deployed
not greater than 50 cm from the shark. on subsurface moorings

14. What have we learned so far?
•Hotspots and site fidelity
•Seasonal changes in abundance
•Nocturnal foraging behavior
•Movements between islands
•Long distance migrations
15. Hotspots and site fidelity
Tagging data showed the same
preference for east coast
Census data showed greatest abundance in January, and
always on eastern side of Wolf

The largest abundances of species were along the eastern
coast of the island.
17. Manual Tracking
The Galapagos shark patrols the entire island each
day, never more than 200 m offshore, but it
prefers the area between Shark Point and Rockfall
The hammerhead hangs around Shark Point
during the day, but heads out to sea at
night, making deep dives (foraging?)… similar
pathways each night… how does it navigate?
