15. RECOVERY OPERATION (RE-OPENING SEALED OFFAREA)
When sealed off area is large; inspection by rescue team cannot be done in one try, i.e. should
be opened in stages :-
1. Build air lock with 2 steel doors on out bye side of stopping of intake airway.
2. Establish fresh air base.
3. Breach only small area only allows rescue team to enter.
4. Only inspect 50-100m distance, marking rescue tracings.
5. If favorable conditions found by rescue team, another team send in to further explore
extending 200m. Decision on data from both rescue teams. Construct temporary stopping
at place up to which has to be reopened.

16. 6. Break the stopping after constructing temporary stopping.
7. Open door of airlock (temporary stopping)- allow small quantity of air (20m3/min) to
flow in further-till gas % falls to 2.
8. Construct permanent brick stopping in front of temporary stopping. Provide doors at
A.B, in temporary stopping to allow materials etc. inside keep rescue team on standby.
9. For further recovery, construct air lock at A, and repeat all steps. Auxiliary fan may be
used for recovered area. Normal fan cannot be used- air may be charged with fire
damp.

It is an emergency shelter installed in
hazardous environments, typically
underground.
Mine rescue chambers are used in multiple
industries, including metalliferous mining, coal
and tunneling.
In 2007, West Virginia mandated refuge
chambers in response to the 2006 Sago mine
disaster, Which resulted in 19 worker fatalities.

24. Inspection and maintenance
∙ For a refuge chamber to fulfill it’s purpose in mine, it should be ready at all times for
immediate, dependable use.
∙ After every blasting, chambers should be inspected regularly and basic tests conducted
to ensure full functionality.
∙ Refuge chambers being moved, it should be inspected after each relocation.
∙ Where a deficiency can not be remedied quickly, underground crews should be
informed of the non availability of chambers.
∙ Basic training on the use of refuge chambers should be included.
