INTRODUCTION DECK
2. The Shaka is the symbolize of Hawai’i.
More importantly, it holds the secrets to living life
to the fullest, making dreams into reality and
creating a strong and sustainable community.
3. Sustainability
The original Shaka Man was a man
named Hamana Kalili of La‘ie, Oahu who
lost three fingers while working at the
Kahuku Sugar Mill. Despite his injury,
Hamana went on to become the village
fisherman and a beloved & respected
Kupuna (elder).
As Master Fisherman, Hamana was
responsible for feeding the village while
managing the reef from being fished out.

And more...
In 2019, we were invited to capture
the story of the Shaka from present
day La‘ie Kupuna, who with advancing
age, wish their stories of Tutu
Hamana to be documented and
shared with the world.
The Kupuna are 100% Hawaiian
which is extremely rare and a result
of LDS Church members marrying
only those from within the church.
5. Multiculturalism
The word “Shaka” derives from
Japan’s “Shakyamuni Buddha”
who’s mudra (hand gestures) mean
“Fear not” and “It’s OK, go for it.”
Interviews confirm that Okinawan
plantation workers brought the
word from Japan with use starting
in the mid-1960s.
6. Historica Layers
Lippy Espinda, a car salesman and
”Hawai’i Five-O” actor, popularized
the Shaka on TV.
Honolulu Mayor Frank Fasi added a
shaking motion during “wave sign”
campaigning.
7. Epic & Extreme
Surfers adopted Shakyamuni’s “Fear not, go for it”
and search for nirvana, added “Hang Loose” and
sent the Shaka around the world.
8. Wisdom for the Ages
The Shaka holds the secrets to how Hawaii’s
people created a harmonious paradise despite

20. Filmmaker’s Statemen
“Shaka the Movie” started as a passing curiosity. A
friend introduced me to elders in La‘ie who as young
keiki (children), learned life and fishing from the Shaka
Man, Hamana Kalili. The elders (Kupuna) had guarded
their stories for nearly a century. But given advancing
age, they o ered to tell their stories on tape to preserve
the story for future generations.
We’re honored to play a role in preserving this story. The
Shaka holds timeless wisdom to harmony, satisfaction,
and surviving trying times. It’s secrets are as relevant
today as ever.
