The document describes the West African Initiative to Strengthen Capacities through Health Systems Research project. The project aims to generate evidence through research to inform health policy and strengthen relationships between researchers, policymakers, and practitioners. It established a Regional Consultative Committee of experts to provide technical support and promote regional collaboration. Four research teams in Benin, Sierra Leone, Senegal, and Burkina Faso were selected to conduct studies on improving primary healthcare access. The project is implemented through the West African Health Organization and provides support to the research teams, including establishing national steering committees to facilitate dialogue between researchers and health ministries.
UCSF conducts extensive international HIV research. [1] Over 200 faculty conduct research in over 100 countries, with over $77 million in grants involving international work. [2] Coordination of this research has increased through groups like the AIDS Research Institute but more is needed. [3] Next steps include improving tracking of grants and sites, providing more support for researchers abroad, and creating a "one stop shop" to facilitate the entire research process from start to finish.
1) Dr. Patrick Corley gave a presentation on Fighting Blindness' research strategy and vision for the future at their Annual General Meeting.
2) Fighting Blindness funds research grants at several Irish universities and institutions aimed at preventing or curing blindness. Their strategic goals include advancing gene therapy, stem cell technology, and retinal implant research.
3) One of their key initiatives is establishing a Vision Research Institute to unite their research portfolio, accelerate patient-focused research, and raise the profile of vision research in Ireland. The Institute would employ dedicated researchers and help attract additional funding.
The West African Health Organization (WAHO) conducted a situational analysis to understand how research evidence is currently used for health policymaking in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) region. Here is a summary of Pneumothorax:
Pneumothorax, also known as a collapsed lung, is a condition that occurs when air leaks into the space between the lung and chest wall. This air buildup puts pressure on the lung, preventing it from expanding fully when you breathe. A pneumothorax can cause a complete or partial collapse of the lung.

Hypotension, or low blood pressure, is when the pressure of blood circulating in the body is lower than normal or expected. It's only a problem if it negatively impacts the body and causes symptoms. Normal blood pressure is usually between 90/60 mmHg and 120/80 mmHg, but pressures below 90/60 are generally considered hypotensive.

CONCLUSION
The overall objective of this call is to support a West African initiative that contributes to establishing a body of knowledge about strengthening equitable health systems that is in turn used to influence national and local programs and policies. The research teams and the resulting research will also be linked to efforts by the West African Health Organization (WAHO) and a regional reference group of leaders to contribute to regional strengthening of institutions and key stakeholders in their effort to improve health outcomes for their region.
Specific objectives
Generate an evidence base of rigorous and relevant research results addressing specific health systems problems that can be used to inform policy development and implementation
Strengthen relationships across multi-stakeholder groups of researchers, practitioners and decision-makers with the responsibility for addressing the specific problems that have been identified
Build the capacity of junior researchers through provision of bursary support as part of each grant
Promote regional collaboration for policy influence through strengthening relationships with the West African Health Organization, regional leaders on health systems and researchers engaged through this project in health systems research
Produce strategic outputs that can inform policy and practice based on the results and lessons learned, e.g. policy briefs, peer‑reviewed articles, and a special peer-reviewed supplement on research results.
*Strengthening in country health policy and systems research capacity in West Africa
