Mies van der Rohe was a renowned German-American architect known for pioneering modern architecture and popularizing the phrases "Less is more" and "God is in the details." Some of his most notable works included the Seagram Building in New York, which featured a simple rectangular form and extensive use of glass, and the Villa Tugendhat in Brno, which demonstrated his concept of fluid interior space. Mies was a master of steel and glass construction and is renowned for exposing and refining structural details to an exceptional degree, as seen in his Barcelona Pavilion which used various natural materials like marble, onyx, and glass.
Neo-Eclectic architecture is a 20th century style that combines elements of different historical designs. It uses materials like brick, stone, and vinyl siding. Common features are two-car garages, homes set back from the street, and earth-toned paint colors. Neo-Eclectic homes are found in North America and are characterized by their inexpensive construction, lack of front porches, and covered entryways.

The Yale University Art Gallery was Louis Kahn's first major commission and is considered one of his early masterpieces. Kahn designed the building while he was a critic at Yale's School of Architecture. The gallery introduced several new concepts for Kahn, including clear separation of spaces, symmetry, and a vocabulary based on triangles and circles. The modular concrete and brick building featured an innovative triangular staircase and a distinctive concrete roof structure that housed lighting and ventilation. The Art Gallery of Yale University established Kahn as an important architect and demonstrated his emerging style.
The document discusses the International Style of architecture. It describes the International Style as a design approach that developed in Europe in the 1920s and was influenced by developments in visual arts. It emphasizes functionality over ornamentation with regular forms and volumetric masses. Some key characteristics include an emphasis on regularity and form following function using industrial materials. The document also discusses famous architects like Le Corbusier and some of their notable buildings designed in the International Style such as the Villa Savoye.
French architecture between 1000-1400 AD included Romanesque and Gothic styles. Romanesque descended from Roman architecture and used thick walls, small windows, and groin vaults. Gothic originated in France and was the opposite of Romanesque, using large windows, thin walls, and rib vaulting. Stone and stained glass were the main materials, with limestone commonly used since metal was too expensive. Architecture evolved from bulky Romanesque to more open and welcoming Gothic designs as walls became thinner.
