Do you remember having guest
speakers in class when you were
in school? Remember how that
speaker made you feel or helped
you realize that you wanted to
do something in a specific in-
dustry? That’s what the
Speaker’s Bureau does for area
students.
There are many speaking en-
gagements that need to be filled.
Though some of the presenta-
tions have been specifically re-
quested, there are plenty of open
engagements. If you or someone
in your office would like to vol-
unteer some time to be a guest
speaker, please contact BEA
coordinator, Heather Asker.
Being a guest speaker is great
exposure for your company/
organization and helps enrich
the minds of the youth in our
community. The presentations
span from grades k-12, so as
diverse as the grades levels so
are the presentations.
Your careful consideration to
become a speaker is greatly ap-
preciated. The BEA and San
Joaquin County students hope
you’ll become a guest speaker.
Examples of speaking engage-
ments that need to be filled:
October 4– IBML
October 9– Project LIVE
November 3– Edison AVID
November 4– CaMP
The Speaker’s Bureau is con-
stantly growing and more and
more teachers are booking guest
speakers for their classes. The
students really enjoy the experi-
ence and opportunity to talk to
professionals from diverse busi-
nesses. Let’s help these students
raise their awareness of the dif-
ferent career opportunities there
are within our community.
Through the Speaker’s Bureau,
we can make this happen!
For a complete list of engage-
ments that need to be filled call
or email Heather Asker at
2 0 9 . 7 5 1 . 2 7 1 6 o r
hasker@stocktonchamber.org.
Also, if you have any assembly
opportunities for the school’s
please allow the BEA to help get
you into the schools.
This year there’s a new Director
of Student Services for Stockton
Unified School District. Julie
Penn is the new director and has
taken her time to meet with the
BEA coordinator and re-
approve dates for a couple of
events for our local high school
students.
Operation College Bound, a
college fair for juniors and sen-
iors will be held on Friday, Janu-
ary 26th, 2007. Specific details
are still in the works. Career Jam
2007 has been set for April 27th,
2007 @ Heald College– Stock-
ton. Operation College Bound is
strictly for colleges, universities,
and trade schools. Career Jam is
more for career exploration and
preparation.
These events are specifically
designed for local high school
students. With the participation
from the local business commu-
nity, we are able to show stu-
dents that there are good jobs in
our community. This helps show
the students that they do not
have to leave Stockton to find a
good job.

Dates Re-Approved for
BEA Events
On November 9th the Greater
Stockton Chamber of Com-
merce’s Business Education
Alliance will facilitate the 11th
annual “Principal for a Day”
event. Principal for a Day
(PFAD) is a proven way for
leaders in schools and members
of the community to share ideas,
resources, and a sense of re-
sponsibility for education in our
region. By providing a first-hand
perspective of the decisions and
responsibilities principals face
daily, PFAD participants are
encouraged to take a greater
interest in public education and
in many cases develop personal
relationships with the school. At
the same time, Principal for a
Day provides principals with an
opportunity to create meaning-
ful relationships with individuals
in the private sector. This
fulfilling event continues to
grow each year, with over 80
schools participating countywide
in 2005. The Principal for a Day
volunteer may spend as little as
two hours or up to the entire
day at their adopted school.
Once the PFAD is assigned to a
school, specific arrangements
are mutually agreed upon be-
tween the school principal and
volunteer.
Volunteer applications are avail-
able on the BEA website,
www.bea2003.com, or you may
call Heather Asker at
209.751.2716. If you are an edu-
cator and would like to partici-
pate, contact Heather and we’ll
get you set up.
This event is a great way to build
on the relationships the BEA
already has with the business
community and educators.
A few schools that have confirmed
participation:
• Pittman Elementary
• Huerta Elementary
• Stockton Skills School
• Chavez High School
• Weber Institute
A few businesses sending volunteers
for PFAD:
• National University
• Humphreys College
• Heald College
• Allied Waste
• Bertilacchi Insurance
• MBH Insurance and Financial
Services, Inc.

Office
