Senegal gained independence from France in 1960 and formed a federation with Mali until it became an independent republic. In 1973, Senegal joined with other West African nations to create the West African Economic Community. Léopold Sédar Senghor was Senegal's first president, retiring in 1981. Senegal and Gambia formed a short-lived union called Senegambia from 1982 to 1989. Aminata Touré became prime minister in 2013 and still holds that position. Senegal is located in Western Africa along the North Atlantic coast between Guinea-Bissau and Mauritania, with terrain that rises from coastal lowlands to foothills inland.
