OSMC 2014: From monitoringsucks to monitoringlove (and back) | Kris BuytaertNETWAYS
Back in June 2011 John Vincent ranted on twitter that #monitoringsucks, and for a lot of us he was absolutely right.
At #devopsdays Rome 2012, in November, Ulf Mansson proclaimed his new found love for monitoring and we changed the hashtag into #monitoringlove.
Based on a new era of open source tools, Ulf started loving monitoring again. And for a lot of us he was absolutely right. Over the past 5 years an enormous amount of new tools and new patterns has come out of the community sometimes tagged with #devops, pretty much all of them open source. Do you still know what you should be using for what? And what the differences are?
An opinionated overview of the open source monitoring landscape to clear up the confusion on what you should use, or make the decision even more difficult on you :)

WHATS'ON is a software solution of MEDIAGENIX that manages the lifecycle of content within media companies.
For a new project with a telecom operator we needed to handle incoming metadata, video files and images and make this content available on several VOD platforms. These workflows can become very complex and require intense communication with various systems (transcoders, encryption software, a VOD backend system...).
In this presentation, we will show how we are using our in-house product WHATS'ON (written in Smalltalk) in combination with Camunda BPM and Apache NiFi, using external tasks and the Camunda BPM REST API.
Managing Serverless Microservices in the Wild
Handing off responsibility for your microservice's infrastructure with AWS API Gateway and Lambda is great, but it also means losing visibility and influence over your app in production.
In this talk, we'll discuss different strategies to gain insights into what actually is going on inside your serverless app. We will present a tool we've built at atomData to get high quality, actionable logs and metrics about our services.
Solution for the reactive relational DB connection when programming using Spring WebFlux. When you want all you app to be reactive, don't make JDBC DB connection a bottlenack. Use R2DBC driver. In the presentation I share my experience on how to work with the driver, and if it is already ready to be used in serious projects on production. The talk was presented at Devoxx Ukraine, Nov 1, 2019.
Microservices architecture has changed how companies develop and deploy applications. This change has affected testing process as well. New techniques have emerged and others have been enhanced. Does your organization wish to achieve unicorn like speed? With N deploys per day? Or a lead time (time to business value from idea to production) measured in days/weeks instead of months/years? In this session, we will not only describe how to use Istio and Kubernetes but actively demonstrate 3 specific techniques that you can use immediately following the session.
Currently, Istio is gaining a lot of traction as service-mesh implementation for Kubernetes. In this session, we are going to explore how to install Istio, and how to deploy and release resilient, tested, fault-tolerant cloud-native services.

Building applications that leverage blockchain data can be cumbersome, but it’s not impossible. Because blockchains don’t typically have RESTful APIs, delivering data to your web app can be complicated. However, we found a way around this challenge by deploying a blockchain node to an EC2 instance. With this approach, we were able to request data and deliver it to our web app using Lambda.
In this presentation, you will learn:
-How we used AWS Lambda and blockchain to build a robust web app
-Best practices for delivering blockchain data to your web app
-Cost-effective ways of serving blockchain data to your application

In this talk, I'd go through the Evolution of JavaScript build tools, their features of most javascript build tools and what we should be expecting in the future from build tools.
ServiceStack is probably best known for its simple approach to write webservices, no matter if it is the REST-way or anything else. Have you looked what come in the package besides just the services? There are allot of tools that could help you developments get even faster. Getting tired of big ORMs, well there is OrmLite for several different databases, besides dataaccess there are several other goodies that comes along. From dataaccess, logging to caching there are plenty of helpful things that integrate straight into ServiceStack.
This session will dig deeper into what the different packages can solve for you, and how they are used…of course it is impossible to get deep into all of them, but you will see how to get going in different areas.

SOCRadar Research Team: Latest Activities of IntelBrokerSOCRadar
The European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol) has suffered an alleged data breach after a notorious threat actor claimed to have exfiltrated data from its systems. Infamous data leaker IntelBroker posted on the even more infamous BreachForums hacking forum, saying that Europol suffered a data breach this month.
The alleged breach affected Europol agencies CCSE, EC3, Europol Platform for Experts, Law Enforcement Forum, and SIRIUS. Infiltration of these entities can disrupt ongoing investigations and compromise sensitive intelligence shared among international law enforcement agencies.
However, this is neither the first nor the last activity of IntekBroker. We have compiled for you what happened in the last few days. To track such hacker activities on dark web sources like hacker forums, private Telegram channels, and other hidden platforms where cyber threats often originate, you can check SOCRadar’s Dark Web News.

Globus Compute wth IRI Workflows - GlobusWorld 2024Globus
As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.
Exploring Innovations in Data Repository Solutions - Insights from the U.S. G...Globus
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has made substantial investments in meeting evolving scientific, technical, and policy driven demands on storing, managing, and delivering data. As these demands continue to grow in complexity and scale, the USGS must continue to explore innovative solutions to improve its management, curation, sharing, delivering, and preservation approaches for large-scale research data. Supporting these needs, the USGS has partnered with the University of Chicago-Globus to research and develop advanced repository components and workflows leveraging its current investment in Globus. The primary outcome of this partnership includes the development of a prototype enterprise repository, driven by USGS Data Release requirements, through exploration and implementation of the entire suite of the Globus platform offerings, including Globus Flow, Globus Auth, Globus Transfer, and Globus Search. This presentation will provide insights into this research partnership, introduce the unique requirements and challenges being addressed and provide relevant project progress.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Semi-automated bank transfers with Rails and Shinsei
1. Tokyo Rails Meetup #36
July 24th, 2017
19:00 - Doors Open
19:30 - Semi-automated bank transfers with Rails and
Shinsei - David Stosik
20:10 - Drinks, food, and networking
20:40 - Project Show and Tell
21:20 - Wrapping up
22:00 - Doors Close
10. Thor ⚡️
• https://github.com/erikhuda/thor
• Toolkit for building powerful command-line interfaces
• In shinseibank-ruby, allowed us to create a CLI to
perform common operations
11.
12.
13. envchain 🔑
• https://github.com/sorah/envchain
• By @sorah, Cookpad developer
• Securely stores secrets (Mac OS X: Keychain, Linux: Gnome’s
Keyring)
• Dynamically retrieves secrets and sets them as environment
variables
• Avoids storing secrets in clear text files
14.
15.
16.
17.
18. Difficulties
• Encoding:
• Shinsei’s Internet banking does not accept UTF-8
• String#toutf8:
This method decode MIME encoded string and convert
halfwidth katakana to fullwidth katakana. If you don't want it,
use
NKF.nkf('-wxm0', str) 🏻🏻♂️ ???
https://ruby-doc.org/stdlib-1.8.6/libdoc/nkf/rdoc/String.html#method-i-toutf8
• Testing
19.
20. Goal 🎯
• Automate monthly rent transfer
• Open to evolutions
• Avoid issuing multiple transfers
• Security
• Keep last step manual
21. Solution
• Daily task checks if new transfer needs to be issued
• On new transfer:
• Create a transfer record with all details
• Send by email a one-time link that executes the transfer
• (Almost) No UI!
30. Just a little bit more magic ✨
• Daily task that checks
schedules to issue new
transfers
• Mailer that sends email
with one-time link
• Plain text responses for
simplicity
31. Conclusions ✅
• Limits:
• Only Shinsei, not modular
• Shinsei is updating their Internet
banking! 😱
• No interface to manage
schedules
• One instance per user/account
• Learned:
• shinseibank-ruby gem uses
Shinsei’s design flaws as an
API
• CLI with Thor
• Scheduling with IceCube
• Rails 5’s has_secured_token
32. Thank you!
