New is Easy but Right is Hard: Hacking Product ManagementBernard Leong
Talk given on 15 Nov 2013, in Hackers & Painters (http://http://hackersandpainters.sg/), Singapore @ Blk 71.
Synopsis: A great product is a synthesis of technology and business thinking. How do we decide what goes into the product and determine the roadmap of the product? How do we establish the balance between the business and technology of the product? In this session, we discuss some interesting lessons learned on product management and why both business leaders and technologists don't get it.
Why do startups need a minimum viable product (MVP)? How do we define the features for a MVP? What are the principles that we can use to move the team towards building that MVP which can be subjected to a lot of distractions in the market? In this session, I will guide the students in Singapore University of Technology & Design on a product development session and teach them to think, construct and work out a MVP.
A keynote about product design during the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES) Design Award 2013 competition. In this talk, I discuss how we should start from the user on product design, whether hardware and software. Part of the emphasis will centered on some interesting principles such as learn from data, less is more and focus on the most boring but interesting feature.
Presented on 7 Nov 2012 in the Singapore Computer Society, the talk focus on the priorities, challenges and paradigms where a product manager should decide if their digital product should go mobile or web first. The talk also introduce the lean startup model and responsive web design to the audience.

Building a (Mobile-Web) Start-up: the 2011 wayBernard Leong
Delivered on 25 April for Rotary Club, Tanglin
Synopsis: The era of business plans and presentations to raise money for mobile-web tech start-up ideas is over. In Silicon Valley, the venture incubator, Y-Combinator led by Paul Graham together with the business angels there have crushed the old school way of building an internet start-up by three core concepts: agile, iterate & pivot. In this talk, we examine how these three core concepts are applied in practice by examining the case studies of the latest and hottest of start-ups in US: Facebook, Twitter, Groupon and FourSquare.
Modern ideas in theoretical physics revolve around the concept of extra-dimensions and the attempt to unify the four fundamental forces of nature with string theories. Our Universe has been a great & extraordinary laboratory where we formulate hypotheses to disprove these ideas. Can we find extra dimensions via the cosmic microwave background radiation left over from the first three minutes in our Universe? How do we test such an idea using modern satellite technologies like Planck and WMAP? The story started from a doctorate thesis & ends with a satellite that has been recently launched into space.
7 Tips for Idea Generation for Start-upsBernard Leong

It also gives a short glimpse to mobile social networking and its rise in 2010.
This is based on the Executive Summary Workshop I have been conducting in the past two months for NTU Ideas Inc. It also focus on the following topics: (1) Identification of Idea and Opportunity, (2) How to write an executive summary and (3) Resources required for setup in Singapore.
Ever since the launch of the iPhone, the iTunes platform has brought together the mobile and web developers into the same space of development. How does the developer navigate in such a space filled with apps stores (Android Market, Apple iTunes and Nokia Ovi)? This talk addresses the trends and observations in the current market and seek to provide a perspective in where the roadmap for the mobile-web economy will head to.
Presented at 16th Infocomm & Media Horizons, 7th October, Genexis Theatre, Fusionopolis.
The topic will address online social networks in Asia (Mixi, Xiaonei and Cyworld), mainly on its trends and patterns across southeast Asia, and also discuss various strategies on technology platforms (for building one), growth and monetization.
From a theoretical physicist who come up with experiments to find extra dimensions in the universe and searching genes using machine learning, I want to talk about two realistic and achievable ideas that I like to build as a technologist. These two products revolve around speech recognition & next generation social networks. Presented for Barcamp Singapore 3.

Narrated Business Proposal for the Philadelphia Eaglescamrynascott12
Slide 1:
Welcome, and thank you for joining me today. We will explore a strategic proposal to enhance parking and traffic management at Lincoln Financial Field, aiming to improve the overall fan experience and operational efficiency. This comprehensive plan addresses existing challenges and leverages innovative solutions to create a smoother and more enjoyable experience for our fans.
Slide 2:
Picture this: It’s a crisp fall afternoon, driving towards Lincoln Financial Field. The atmosphere is electric—tailgaters grilling, fans in Eagles jerseys creating a sea of green and white. The air buzzes with camaraderie and anticipation. You park, join the throng, and make your way to your seat. The stadium roars as the Eagles take the field, sending chills down your spine. Each play is a thrilling dance of strategy and skill. This is what being an Eagles fan is all about—the joy, the pride, and the shared experience.
Slide 3:
But now, the day is marred by frustration. The excitement wanes as you struggle to find a parking spot. The congestion is overwhelming, and tempers flare. The delays mean you miss the pre-game excitement, the tailgate camaraderie, and even the opening kick-off. After the game, the joy of victory or the shared solace of defeat is overshadowed by the stress of navigating out of the parking lot. The gridlock, honking horns, and endless waiting drain the energy and joy from what should have been an unforgettable experience.
Our proposal aims to eliminate these frustrations, ensuring that from arrival to departure, your experience is extraordinary. Efficient parking and smooth traffic flow are key to maintaining the high spirits and excitement that make game days special.
Slide 4:
The Philadelphia Eagles are not just a premier NFL team; they are an integral part of the community, hosting games, concerts, and various events at Lincoln Financial Field. Our state-of-the-art stadium is designed to provide a world-class experience for every attendee. Whether it's the thrill of game day, the excitement of a live concert, or the camaraderie of community events, we pride ourselves on delivering a fan-first experience and maintaining operational excellence across all our activities. Our commitment to our fans and community is unwavering, and we continuously strive to enhance every aspect of their experience, ensuring they leave with unforgettable memories.
Slide 5:
Recent trends show an increasing demand for efficient event logistics. Our customer feedback has consistently highlighted frustrations with parking and traffic. Surveys indicate that a significant number of fans are dissatisfied with the current parking situation. Comparisons with other venues like Citizens Bank Park and Wells Fargo Center reveal that we lag in terms of parking efficiency and convenience. These insights underscore the urgent need for innovation to meet and exceed fan expectations.
Slide 6:
As we delve into the intricacies of our operations, one glaring issue emer

8. Can we explain this via a
microscopic model?
✤ We initialize 20 managers with two attributes: (1) Reputation and (2)
Tenure Length.
✤ Use the standard round robin (38 games) with each managers playing
against each other and a simple scoring system. The principles of
relegation, “Home” and “Away” apply.
✤ We use a set of criteria to decide how we fire a manager.
✤ Then run it for a hundred years (steady state) and see if we can
produce the power law distribution relating tenure length and
frequency.
9. When do we “fire” a manager?
✤ A manager is fired for poor performance - Firing threshold.
✤ A manager is poached by another club by good performance -
Poaching threshold
✤ A manager retires due to old age - Ossification threshold
✤ A manager is replaced when the team is relegated in the main league
