Ricardo O. Henry presents on the importance of mental health and self-care for experienced healthcare workers. He defines mental health as a person's psychological and emotional well-being, including how they think, feel, and behave. Mental health is important because caregivers are susceptible to conditions like depression, stress, and burnout due to the demands of their jobs. Henry provides strategies for self-care like getting professional help, connecting with others, and controlling outlets for frustration to help prevent mental health issues. The presentation emphasizes that self-care is not selfish and is necessary to effectively serve others from a place of wellness.

Editor's Notes
What are you other thoughts on mental health?
>> LEAD OUT.. Very often we think of mental health in relation to the mental illness, without giving accord to the WELLNESS side of mental health… lets look at who we are talking about when we speak about mental health in relation to our children
This depression prevalence includes 2nd & 3rd time mothers . Infants often react to depressed mothers with anger, distress, withdrawal behavior, avoidance, and disruptions in the ability to regulate their own emotions. Consequently, infants of depressed mothers tend to cry more than babies of nondepressed mothers. (Field, et. Al 1998; Murray & Cooper,1997; and others). In The National Survey of Child and Adolesent Well-being, a stud of primary (at home) caregivers, spanning 1999-2006, it was found that in the population sample of 5,501 persons – 25% suffered major depression, another 37% mild or moderate depression . The study was conducted while the children were respectively 12, 18 and 36mths anf then at 5yo. At each of the researcher found that there was no statistical significant difference in the mood and mental status of the caregivers (across the respective racial groups). Although the larger percentage of the sample (53%) did not self report symptoms of depression, that 46.3% of the caregivers were depression is alarming and concerning. Of concern is also the concomitant effect of the caregiver depression. That those children were themselves also miserable, fussy, irritable… One concerning factor for depression was intimate partner violence… this does not only represent a beginning cycle for the adults but also for the children in those homes… both in interms of child abuse and learnt behavior.

Spirituality – for many people, the first point of contact for social services or for mental wellness services is church. Either through their spirituality program, mass and confession, pastoral counselling, health fairs etc. MH professionals but dialogue and where there is deficiency train and empower these spiritual leaders with knowledge to offer guidance
SCHOOL – Even with the presence of school counsellors, many schools dismiss the misbehaviour, inattention and inattendance to miscreance and often overlook mental health causes. Healthcare and MH, and social work professionals should continue to dialogue with school to support the education that school counsellors no doubt impart to staff who are also trained to identify these problems. The additional neutral voice can sometimes circumvent the red-tape and introduce novel, low or no cost remedies which can achieve short-term and long term effects… There is a difference between ADHD and defiance; between a LD and Mischief…. Vision, hearing, LD, ODD, conduct disorder
Health Care System is often the first point of entry
- To mitigate burn out, the professional caregiver – in what ever title, must engage in SELF CARE!!
- To education the family you work with is self care

Start at work
- Sometimes we are so stiff; so busy; so consumed we forget to laugh and when we work in a caustic environment its twice as bad, however laughter is food for the soul. When we get involved in games, our inhibitions are lifted, we learn to trust, we become somewhat endeared to the participants and release endorphins which numbs our discomfort and helps us feel better. Dopamine levels are also regulated in these activities as we seek to continue the pleasure from the gains of participation and connecting.
