Islam teaches that wealth should be distributed fairly and that the government is responsible for protecting people's economic rights. Income must be earned from legitimate, halal sources and spending must be moderate. Wealth above a certain level requires paying zakat (charity). Interest, corruption, gambling and other haram activities are prohibited as they harm society and the economy. Poverty should be addressed to promote economic progress. The Prophet Muhammad's life and teachings provide an exemplary model of ethical business practices and justice.
