3. Brendan is a young monk, he is twelve years old
and lives with his uncle Cellach, the Abbot, in the
Abbey of Kells (IX Century, Ireland).
Along with the other brothers, he is building a
wall to protect the abbey from the attacks of the
Vikings.
4. One day, Aidan, Cellach’s brother and his cat
Pangur Bán arrive at the abbey. Aidan is an old
monk from Iona who keeps a secret manuscript
he is working on. He decides to teach Brendan
all his knowledge to draw the book pages.
5. Brendan discovers the art of miniature to finish
the book. He leaves the Abbey for the first time
and he goes into the enchanted forest to get
some berries for ink. There, where the pagan
monster Crom Cruach and other dangerous
creatures are hidden, he meets Aisling, a girl
who turns into a wolf to help him.
6. THE BOOK OF KELLS,
“the book that turned darkness into light”.
The Book of Kells is an illuminated manuscript
book written in Latin.It was created by Celtic
monks by the year 800 and it could have been
started in Iona before being continued in the
town of Kells.
7. It contains the Gospels of the New Testament.
The manuscript is 33 cm long and 25 cm wide
and each page of text contains between sixteen
and eighteen lines.
8. The book was never finished and the manuscript
remained in the town of Kells until 1654 when the
governor sent it to Dublin.
Since 1661 it is kept in the Old Library at Trinity
College.
9. The Book of Kells is one of the finest and most
famous manuscripts and one of the most
important remains of medieval religious art.
