WE SCULPT ARCHITECTURE
Nir Sivan Architects is a dynamic and creative practice whose international
projects are of architectural, sculptural and experimental significance.
Originally founded by architect Nir Sivan in 2006 and based in Rome, ITALY and holdes business base in ISRAEL and
BRAZIL.
We believe that the creation of architecture and design should not be limited by conventional instruments, but
expanded through a multidisciplinary approach. The terms “sculpture” and “automotive design”are common in our
everyday language and influence our way of thinking.
We pay special attention to the continuing evolution of technology and planning methodology. Our extensive
experience in parametric (100% BIM as Revit and others) design combined with different modelling environments
and within various industries means we are able to govern and refine the most complex geometries.
We can therefore offer clients a unique design, with the enhanced ability to illustrate each stage as it evolves while
simultaneously keeping tight control over the whole project.

RETAIL & LEISURE, Mix use design partner
Design International was founded in 1965 in Toronto, Canada and quickly built a reputation for truly innovative
design, particularly in retail architecture. Indeed, the practice pioneered many design features that have since
become industry benchmarks. These include the use of glazed roofs to create covered “streets” that are flooded
with daylight (Bugis Junction, Singapore) and creating the first mall that integrated retail and entertainment in one
centre (Coco Walk, Florida).

Description
The new Multifunctional Hall of the Police School, Marshals and Brigadieri “Felice Maritano” will be a point of ref-
erence as a space for training, creativity, sporting activity but above all, it will become a symbol of modernity and
attraction.
These goals will be achieved thanks to an analysis of the pre-existing structure and analyzing the needs, trends and
preferences of the new generation of the public institution.
The current structure, with its rational and clear architecture and composition, offers the right “frame” for a modern
and technologically advanced architectural intervention.
The axis and the central Gallery of the current structure, with its arched structure, will be interpreted in a modern
key, creating an energy that influences the composition and the volume of the new project. On the other hand, the
perimeter circulation of the piazza d’armi courtyard will be well highlighted and integrated into the L5 master plan in
order to create a more homogeneous area between the surrounding school and the central function. Depending on
the function and needs, the entrances to the new classroom can be opened or remain closed, creating a more con-
trolled flow in and out.
The ETFE cushions enclosed in the Grid shell of wooden beams symbolize the new realities created in the center.
From here comes a light, full of meaning, which reflects as DIAMONDS and symbolizes a resource of rejuvenation
and maturity at the same time, for today and tomorrow.

Context
Rio de Janeiro, a UNESCO World Heritage city, has been chosen to host the FIFA World Cup in 2014, and the Olympic
Games in 2016. The prestigious CasaShopping retail centre in which the project is located is in Barra da Tijuca, which is
the main site for both events.
Description
The freeform canopy of Carioca Wave is inspired by the impressive Barra da Tijuca coastline. The dynamics and
movement of the sea are what stimulated us to form the natural sculptural shape of an ocean wave from which it
takes its name. The project was driven artistically and emotionally, and developed architecturally, adding both
value and function to its surroundings.
Masterplan
Before embarking on the design we worked on a longer-term expansion and development plan for the entire retail
complex. This masterplan includes four additional canopies with the goal of not only meeting current requirements,
but also developing a unique and distinct brand identity for the future.
Structure and Precedent
The structural frame of the canopy is self-supporting, without any columns or lateral supports. The challenge here
was to combine this self-supporting ability with wide cantilevers to push technology to the limits. Indeed, this free-
form gridshell is considered to be the first in South America.

Rishon municipality is known for its origins related to greenery, water, and handwork tradition. We chose to empha-
size these origins while introducing and enclosing this with new sculpted design and technology innovation instru-
ments to let citizens feel this is their home and to attract and welcome them to enjoy the piazza in front as well as
the main Foyer inside the building. Images of the city life, as well as the city’s seashore and landscape, will be project-
ed in interior monitors during the day and light projection on the main membrane element inside the hall. This mem-
brane element will conduct the design and will form a Heart for the project. New city hall logo and identity design

Concept
The LANDMARK tower is a 205m high Skyscraper building, planned in the center of Tel Aviv Sarona market
area.
Our idea is to create a design that will express and describe the flow and the circulation of the ground floor
as the eye of a storm.
The sculpture at entry level will serve as Info point having a dynamic shape that generates and reflects its
concept to the floors above and the hundred meters high foyer by delicate elements like handrails and such.
This way the concept will fill the entire space while keeping it light, not massive, yet coherent and artistic.
Different materials as CNC wood base or fiberglass and advanced finishing will be used

GUILIN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT
TERMINAL 2 AND 3
Guangxi, China
Description
After a comprehensive study of the required functions and various phases of development for the future long-term
use of the airport, the geographic nature of the Guangxi region, with its endless hills, along with the shape of the
existing terminal, were what inspired us to create a design composed of soft shapes, bonded together to form a new
mass that is in harmony with its context.
This intention was given a special interpretation internally, by designing and carefully fitting each and every function
within the new terminal buildings to complete the overall concept.

PRVS Architecture; Eng.: ADR; Local CACC; Sistemi sas
Description
The planning of this extension was influenced by the requirement for flexibility in the flow and mix of the airport’s
domestic and international passengers.
This idea was then expanded to produce an overall design that is a composition of different masses, each with a dis-
tinct function, that join together.
A welcome canopy invites visitors to explore its many services (retail and restaurants), making a new shopping centre
attraction not only for passengers but also for nearby residents. The facade was designed as a patchwork of ele-
ments that reflect and interact with one another, emphasising the overall building concept.

New airport extension
€48 million
60,000 square metres
PRVS Architecture; Eng.: ADR; Local CACC; Sistemi sas
Description
Though the brief for this intervention was defined as an extension, it in fact consisted of planning a standalone
airport. One of the main challenges was confronting the problem of the existing water level and the multiple lakes
that predominate the terrain.
Our solution here was to take advantage of this distinctive characteristic of the site and use it to
create a large-scale Oriental-style garden, with water features and green areas gathered together in harmony with
both pedestrian pathways and the roads leading in and out of the airport complex.
The design of the terminal building itself is characterised by a symmetrical, frontal (curbside) drop-off point and
access area along the main facade, the intention of which is to open up the main entrance as a welcoming hug.
This idea was then reflected within the entire project by introducing a long opening to the terminal envelope,
highlighting its geometry while retaining a clear dialogue with the exterior.

Description
This project presented a number of challenges, one of which was not interfering with the existing airport, which
needed to operate without interruption during all of the construction phases.
The programme was also required to offer a large number of other facilities, such as office buildings and external
parking blocks. Another important design consideration was a modularity that will enable future expansion of the
terminal.
The simple design of the roof, inspired by a flock of birds, is the main element beneath which a conceptual
transparent box contains the various functions.
Though there are clear divisions between the check-in, retail and departure areas, voids in the roof allow the sun to
penetrate, cross and unify these elements below.

The goal was to give a practical interpretation of the infrastructure analysis provided by the authorities, to develop a
functional and understandable masterplan from this, and to conclude with basic studies of interaction/function and
volumes.
Multidisciplinary instruments of analysis were used, with final output and presentation provided at various resolutions
and scales, from reports to general flows and illustrations of typical people movement, stations and architectural
interventions.

Description
This project was characterised by very strict height limits due to the adjacent parliament, municipality buildings and
the view towards a valley to the west.
The plot is also on a prime junction next to the university and the national museum.
For this reason, we proposed lowering the ground area just below the existing lower walkways, thus creating a
welcoming piazza that is not only inviting, but also offers an open public space for interaction between visitors,
students and passersby.
The programme requirement was to accommodate the archives’ three core areas of specialisation: Judaic, Israeli and
Islamic literature, video and audio.
Our proposal here consists of one large element with three conceptual paths individuating each of the main areas.
This in turn created new external spaces at ground level that serve and connect with the upper walkway.
Finally, an opening through the building masses was created in the form of extruded transversal voids that allow views
of the parliament building and over the valley beyond.

Planners and IaN+
Description
The programme required the addition to the existing Museum of Nature of two new museums, of science and
technology, to create an ‘avenue of museums’.
We interpreted this as a form that functions as a blend of elements, but with each having its own individual and
distinct identity, in keeping with the ‘natural’ theme of the museum, inspired by and integrated with the beautiful
terrain of the site itself and the surrounding landscape.
Other important features were the pedestrian axes, which added an urban and landscape planning element to the
project.
All of this led us to form the complex partly underground, freeing up the surface to create natural green terraces that
are perforated so that light and atmosphere can penetrate the spaces below.
The ground covering most of the constructed volume acts as a thick layer of insulation, thus this underground
approach is also in line with the requirements for low energy consumption considering the harsh climate of Jerusalem.
The design of the interior spaces follows the same understanding. Paths cross and share common spaces, while
transparent facades allow views out towards the valley.

Inspiration
Horizontal White was inspired by the width of the panoramic view from this private residential plot.
The facade concept, with a predominantly white finish, offers maximum transparency and allows the spectacular
surroundings to penetrate the interior while protecting against intrusions.
Composition
The double-layer facade concept comprises an exterior double-glazing of mainly transparent panels, and an interior
layer of structurally independent steel mullions, both of which, created using non-linear rectangular shapes, compose
the overall design language, inspired by De Stijl.
The interior layer also works as shelving, and can accommodate elements such as coloured glass vases that add even
more atmosphere to the internal space.
A unique and dynamic feature is the aquarium-style boxes cantilevering form of the exterior layer, with coloured
glass panels interspersed throughout to help maintain privacy but at the same time bring in atmospheric light.
For this project, we worked closely with a small handcraft steel fabricators, who allowed us to create a unique yet
simple project with a modest budget.

and rebuilding.
When the Val d’Orcia, today UNESCO world heritage, territory was redrawn in the 14th and 15th centuries, Tuscan
leaders hoped to create an aesthetically pleasing landscape.
Hundreds of years later, you’ll see their success as soon as you arrive at La Galleria, a restored villa near Sarteano
and the most attractive Val d’Orcia hill towns of southern Tuscany.
From UNESCO website:
“The landscape of Val d’Orcia is part of the agricultural hinterland of Siena, redrawn and developed when it was
integrated in the territory of the city-state in the 14th and 15th centuries to reflect an idealized model of good gov-
ernance and to create an aesthetically pleasing picture. The landscape’s distinctive aesthetics, flat chalk plains out
of which rise almost conical hills with fortified settlements on top, inspired many artists. Their images have come to
exemplify the beauty of well-managed Renaissance agricultural landscapes. The inscription covers: an agrarian and
pastoral landscape reflecting innovative land-management systems; towns and villages; farmhouses; and the Roman
Via Francigena and its associated abbeys, inns, shrines, bridges, etc..”

Inspired by Nature, the Hospital 9 de Julho in

to develop for Amil, Brazil’s largest managed

Our idea is to bring more organic environ-

hospitals as it is known that good design and
atmosphere contributes directly to patients
feelings and helps their recovery.
The Hospital 9 de Julho (H9J) is also a par-

its specific context, as it is located in a typi-

wildly considered “concrete jungle”, as locals
call it.

  • 4. Nir Sivan Architects is a dynamic and creative practice whose international projects are of architectural, sculptural and experimental significance. Originally founded by architect Nir Sivan in 2006 and based in Rome, ITALY and holdes business base in ISRAEL and BRAZIL. We believe that the creation of architecture and design should not be limited by conventional instruments, but expanded through a multidisciplinary approach. The terms “sculpture” and “automotive design”are common in our everyday language and influence our way of thinking. We pay special attention to the continuing evolution of technology and planning methodology. Our extensive experience in parametric (100% BIM as Revit and others) design combined with different modelling environments and within various industries means we are able to govern and refine the most complex geometries. We can therefore offer clients a unique design, with the enhanced ability to illustrate each stage as it evolves while simultaneously keeping tight control over the whole project. www.nirsivan.com info@nirsivan.com + 39 340 0795 381 (WhatsApp) RETAIL & LEISURE, Mix use design partner Design International was founded in 1965 in Toronto, Canada and quickly built a reputation for truly innovative design, particularly in retail architecture. Indeed, the practice pioneered many design features that have since become industry benchmarks. These include the use of glazed roofs to create covered “streets” that are flooded with daylight (Bugis Junction, Singapore) and creating the first mall that integrated retail and entertainment in one centre (Coco Walk, Florida). FLORENCE POLICE SCHOOL Florence- Italy date client category function area role partners team December 2018 Florence Police Public, Entertainment Int. public tender Mix use, Entertainment, Education, Public landmark 2500 seats / 3 basket field, covered 3,300 m2 Design and architectural design, PM EUTECNE, LANIK, other arch. Nir Sivan, arch. Andrzej Samsonowicz, arch. Luca Marcotullio, arch. Federica Natoli Description The new Multifunctional Hall of the Police School, Marshals and Brigadieri “Felice Maritano” will be a point of ref- erence as a space for training, creativity, sporting activity but above all, it will become a symbol of modernity and attraction. These goals will be achieved thanks to an analysis of the pre-existing structure and analyzing the needs, trends and preferences of the new generation of the public institution. The current structure, with its rational and clear architecture and composition, offers the right “frame” for a modern and technologically advanced architectural intervention. The axis and the central Gallery of the current structure, with its arched structure, will be interpreted in a modern key, creating an energy that influences the composition and the volume of the new project. On the other hand, the perimeter circulation of the piazza d’armi courtyard will be well highlighted and integrated into the L5 master plan in order to create a more homogeneous area between the surrounding school and the central function. Depending on the function and needs, the entrances to the new classroom can be opened or remain closed, creating a more con- trolled flow in and out. The ETFE cushions enclosed in the Grid shell of wooden beams symbolize the new realities created in the center. From here comes a light, full of meaning, which reflects as DIAMONDS and symbolizes a resource of rejuvenation and maturity at the same time, for today and tomorrow.

CARIOCA WAVE/ONDA CARIOCA AT CASASHOPPING Rio de Janeiro- Brazil www.casashopping.com/expansao/ date client category function area role partners team 2015 CasaShopping, shopping center Retail, Public Freeform canopy and public landmark Canopy: 1,130 m2 , Context: 1,500 m2 Design–build: architectural design, PM Engineering: Knippers Helbig; Construction: seele do brasil N. Sivan, K. Felix Dorl, A. Samsonowicz, D. Nardone, A. Borgogni, P. Boldeanu Context Rio de Janeiro, a UNESCO World Heritage city, has been chosen to host the FIFA World Cup in 2014, and the Olympic Games in 2016. The prestigious CasaShopping retail centre in which the project is located is in Barra da Tijuca, which is the main site for both events. Description The freeform canopy of Carioca Wave is inspired by the impressive Barra da Tijuca coastline. The dynamics and movement of the sea are what stimulated us to form the natural sculptural shape of an ocean wave from which it takes its name. The project was driven artistically and emotionally, and developed architecturally, adding both value and function to its surroundings. Masterplan Before embarking on the design we worked on a longer-term expansion and development plan for the entire retail complex. This masterplan includes four additional canopies with the goal of not only meeting current requirements, but also developing a unique and distinct brand identity for the future. Structure and Precedent The structural frame of the canopy is self-supporting, without any columns or lateral supports. The challenge here was to combine this self-supporting ability with wide cantilevers to push technology to the limits. Indeed, this free- form gridshell is considered to be the first in South America. “...CasaShopping states that all services were done with the greatest attention and quality and that final results meet our full satisfaction and above...” Francisco Grabowsky Director CasaShopping

Images of the city life, as well as the city’s seashore and landscape, will be project- ed in interior monitors during the day and light projection on the main membrane element inside the hall. This mem- brane element will conduct the design and will form a Heart for the project. New city hall logo and identity design elements were implemented

LANDMARK TOWER INTERIOR DESIGN Tel Aviv, Sarona, Israel date client category function role team 2018, competition, in collaboration with Alex Meitlis Melisron, Africa Israel (AFI Group) Private Interior Design of Entrance, Foyer and terrace. 205 meter high Skyscraper building Architecture, Design N. Sivan, M. Sacco, A. Giancristofaro Concept The LANDMARK tower is a 205m high Skyscraper building, planned in the center of Tel Aviv Sarona market area. Our idea is to create a design that will express and describe the flow and the circulation of the ground floor as the eye of a storm. The sculpture at entry level will serve as Info point having a dynamic shape that generates and reflects its concept to the floors above and the hundred meters high foyer by delicate elements like handrails and such. This way the concept will fill the entire space while keeping it light, not massive, yet coherent and artistic. Different materials as CNC wood base or fiberglass and advanced finishing will be used See Virtual Reality (on mobile as well) http://panorama.enscape3d.com/view/iur1nql5 Open VR in mobile device

This intention was given a special interpretation internally, by designing and carefully fitting each and every function within the new terminal buildings to complete the overall concept.

This idea was then expanded to produce an overall design that is a composition of different masses, each with a dis- tinct function, that join together. A welcome canopy invites visitors to explore its many services (retail and restaurants), making a new shopping centre attraction not only for passengers but also for nearby residents. The facade was designed as a patchwork of ele- ments that reflect and interact with one another, emphasising the overall building concept.

CHANGZHOU INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT EXTENSION Jiangsu, China date client category function budget area collaborators 2008 competition, winning project, awaiting execution Changzhou International Airport Aviation, Transportation, Public New airport extension €48 million 60,000 square metres PRVS Architecture; Eng.: ADR; Local CACC; Sistemi sas Description Though the brief for this intervention was defined as an extension, it in fact consisted of planning a standalone airport. One of the main challenges was confronting the problem of the existing water level and the multiple lakes that predominate the terrain. Our solution here was to take advantage of this distinctive characteristic of the site and use it to create a large-scale Oriental-style garden, with water features and green areas gathered together in harmony with both pedestrian pathways and the roads leading in and out of the airport complex. The design of the terminal building itself is characterised by a symmetrical, frontal (curbside) drop-off point and access area along the main facade, the intention of which is to open up the main entrance as a welcoming hug. This idea was then reflected within the entire project by introducing a long opening to the terminal envelope, highlighting its geometry while retaining a clear dialogue with the exterior.

LAMEZIA TERME INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT EXTENSION Lamezia, Italy date client category function budget area collaborators 2007 competition proposal Lamezia Terme Aeroporto Authority Aviation, Transportation, Public New airport extension €114 million 80,000 square metres PRVS Architects, Ausglobe Formula S.p.a, Pascall+Watson Architects and AICOS Description This project presented a number of challenges, one of which was not interfering with the existing airport, which needed to operate without interruption during all of the construction phases. The programme was also required to offer a large number of other facilities, such as office buildings and external parking blocks. Another important design consideration was a modularity that will enable future expansion of the terminal. The simple design of the roof, inspired by a flock of birds, is the main element beneath which a conceptual transparent box contains the various functions. Though there are clear divisions between the check-in, retail and departure areas, voids in the roof allow the sun to penetrate, cross and unify these elements below.

BRIDGE OVER RAILWAYS Terni, Italy date client category function budget collaborators 2012 competition proposal Terni municipality Public Pedestrian and cycle bridge and passageway €3 million PRVS Architecture; Engineers: Eutecne srl Description The project is a part of the general development of the city’s airport and coastline, an area that serves as a transportation junction for the whole of central Italy, combining air, land and partly sea movement. The goal was to give a practical interpretation of the infrastructure analysis provided by the authorities, to develop a functional and understandable masterplan from this, and to conclude with basic studies of interaction/function and volumes. Multidisciplinary instruments of analysis were used, with final output and presentation provided at various resolutions and scales, from reports to general flows and illustrations of typical people movement, stations and architectural interventions.

  • 51. NATIONAL ARCHIVES Jerusalem, Israel date client category function area collaborators 2012 competition proposal National Archives, Israel Public, Cultural National literature, video and audio archives 60,000 square metres David Nofar Architects and IaN+ Description This project was characterised by very strict height limits due to the adjacent parliament, municipality buildings and the view towards a valley to the west. The plot is also on a prime junction next to the university and the national museum. For this reason, we proposed lowering the ground area just below the existing lower walkways, thus creating a welcoming piazza that is not only inviting, but also offers an open public space for interaction between visitors, students and passersby. The programme requirement was to accommodate the archives’ three core areas of specialisation: Judaic, Israeli and Islamic literature, video and audio. Our proposal here consists of one large element with three conceptual paths individuating each of the main areas. This in turn created new external spaces at ground level that serve and connect with the upper walkway. Finally, an opening through the building masses was created in the form of extruded transversal voids that allow views of the parliament building and over the valley beyond.

MUSEUM OF NATURE Jerusalem, Israel date client category function area role collaborators 2012 competition proposal Jerusalem Development Authority Public, Cultural Museum complex 60,000 square metres Architecture, design and coordination David Nofar Architects & Urban Planners and IaN+ Description The programme required the addition to the existing Museum of Nature of two new museums, of science and technology, to create an ‘avenue of museums’. We interpreted this as a form that functions as a blend of elements, but with each having its own individual and distinct identity, in keeping with the ‘natural’ theme of the museum, inspired by and integrated with the beautiful terrain of the site itself and the surrounding landscape. Other important features were the pedestrian axes, which added an urban and landscape planning element to the project. All of this led us to form the complex partly underground, freeing up the surface to create natural green terraces that are perforated so that light and atmosphere can penetrate the spaces below. The ground covering most of the constructed volume acts as a thick layer of insulation, thus this underground approach is also in line with the requirements for low energy consumption considering the harsh climate of Jerusalem. The design of the interior spaces follows the same understanding. Paths cross and share common spaces, while transparent facades allow views out towards the valley.

Demolition&reconstruction 200 square metres Architecture, design and project management N. Sivan Inspiration Horizontal White was inspired by the width of the panoramic view from this private residential plot. The facade concept, with a predominantly white finish, offers maximum transparency and allows the spectacular surroundings to penetrate the interior while protecting against intrusions. Composition The double-layer facade concept comprises an exterior double-glazing of mainly transparent panels, and an interior layer of structurally independent steel mullions, both of which, created using non-linear rectangular shapes, compose the overall design language, inspired by De Stijl. The interior layer also works as shelving, and can accommodate elements such as coloured glass vases that add even more atmosphere to the internal space. A unique and dynamic feature is the aquarium-style boxes cantilevering form of the exterior layer, with coloured glass panels interspersed throughout to help maintain privacy but at the same time bring in atmospheric light. For this project, we worked closely with a small handcraft steel fabricators, who allowed us to create a unique yet simple project with a modest budget.

Sivan, L. Marcotullio, Inspiration The endless natural Tuscany landcape is a frame for this emotional work of an 18th century house Interior Design and rebuilding. When the Val d’Orcia, today UNESCO world heritage, territory was redrawn in the 14th and 15th centuries, Tuscan leaders hoped to create an aesthetically pleasing landscape. Hundreds of years later, you’ll see their success as soon as you arrive at La Galleria, a restored villa near Sarteano and the most attractive Val d’Orcia hill towns of southern Tuscany. From UNESCO website: “The landscape of Val d’Orcia is part of the agricultural hinterland of Siena, redrawn and developed when it was integrated in the territory of the city-state in the 14th and 15th centuries to reflect an idealized model of good gov- ernance and to create an aesthetically pleasing picture. The landscape’s distinctive aesthetics, flat chalk plains out of which rise almost conical hills with fortified settlements on top, inspired many artists. Their images have come to exemplify the beauty of well-managed Renaissance agricultural landscapes. The inscription covers: an agrarian and pastoral landscape reflecting innovative land-management systems; towns and villages; farmhouses; and the Roman Via Francigena and its associated abbeys, inns, shrines, bridges, etc..”

The Hospital 9 de Julho (H9J) is also a par- ticular study case to bring more warmth to its specific context, as it is located in a typi- cal quarter of San Paolo were architecture is wildly considered “concrete jungle”, as locals call it.
