3. GOZO ISLAND, DIVE THE ISLAND OF THE
SEVEN HILLS
Gozo is the second largest island in Malta, more rural as well. Crystal clear waters
and steep walls characterize dives in Gozo as well as the fact that it´s less busy
than Malta Island. It is a popular destination for independent divers. Known as the
“island of the seven hills” because of its 7 miniature table mountains, Gozo has a
roughed coastline with cliffs and bays with breathtaking views.
Mgarr Ix Xini and its tow caves cutting their way into the rock face is the main
attraction here, it´s a popular site for juvenile marine life with a wide variety
of sponges. Raz ll Hobbz has a pillar of rocks that starts 128 ft. (40 m.) down and
rises to 32 ft. (10 m.), making it an easy dive. Jacks and dentex are very common
here also crayfish, crabs and various types of corals. It is a good site
for snorkeling too.
Cathedral Cave is another good site, makes for a good deep dive. It has many holes
and cracks in the ceiling and the sunlight bursts through creating beautiful light
effects. There are over 18 dive sites in Gozo, and Double Arch Reef, another
good dive spot, is a favorite among local divers. It has one arch on top of
another, and it´s a good site for bigger fish such as barracuda and groupers. From
Gozo you can hop to the neighboring Comino Island, where there is excellent spots 3
4. Gozo will keep you busy above water too, with a picturesque, tranquil city to
explore, and layers of history behind every monument.
The Citadel is a great place to explore, cafes and souvenir shops can be found
here. Ta´ Dbiegi Craft Village has artisans working with textiles, leather and
metal, it´s a beautiful market. There are also plenty of hotels and restaurants to
choose from in Gozo.

5. MALTA ISLAND, EXCELLENT WRECK DIVES
Malta Island has over 20 great dive sites, including wrecks, reefs and caves.
Several dive sites can be accessed from shore.
One of them, the Madonna Statue is recommended by dive operations to be the best
“first dive” in Malta, so as to be blessed by the Madonna. It has great visibility and no
currents, so this site is very easy to dive.
The Rozi wreck, another site accessible from the shore, is a popular dive site. Scuttled off
Cirkewwa in 1992 to create an artificial reef, the Rozi wreck is a good site for
photographs and red scorpionfish, amber jacks and nudibranchs.
Cirkewwa Right Arch, a boat dive close to the Rozi, has a naturally formed bowl behind
the arch worth exploring. It is a fun dive and a good site to find octopus hiding in the
cracks.

6. The HMS Stubborn and Imperial Eagle MV are excellent wreck dive sites. The Stubborn
should be done with Trimix, it´s for experience deep divers only.
The P29 is another very popular wreck dive, this German mine sweeper was scuttled as an
attraction in 2007, it´s 166 ft. (52 m.) long and in really good condition. It can be accessed
from shore. The Qawra Jesus is another easy and popular dive site; it features a large statue
of Jesus.
While in Malta, there is plenty of sightseeing to be done. Malta has many
monuments, castles, cathedrals and squares to be explored, as well as beautiful beaches.
The upper Baraka Gardens, created in 1661 by Italian knight Flaminio Balbiani, has
incredible flower beds. Visit The National Museum of Archeology to learn about the ancient
history of the Maltese Archipelago.
