Tumblr as a ‘queer ecosystem’ amongst young LGBTIQ+ people in Australiabradyjay
In this conference paper, we ask: is there something queer about Tumblr?
For young lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ) people, the internet has long been considered a valuable resource for finding connections, friendship, and a sense of belonging in heteronormative and sometimes hostile worlds. For young LGBTIQ+ people in regional and rural areas, where access to visibly queer spaces (bars, parades) and services (sexual health clinics, mental health services) is limited, digital social media provide a potentially even more significant resource. In the Scrolling Beyond Binaries survey, we sought to better understand the role of social media in the lives of young LGBTIQ+ people. Our respondents (n=1304), aged 16-35, reported using a range of social media platforms, including Facebook (97%), Instagram (70%), Snapchat (67%), and Tumblr (64%). In other research on social media use among the general population, Tumblr use is three to six times lower (Pew Internet Research, 2015). This suggests that Tumblr plays a significant role as what Cho (2015) calls a ‘queer ecosystem’.
In this paper, we argue that Tumblr provides a space for sourcing information on sex, gender and sexuality identities, sexual health, and LGBTIQ+ cultures. The anonymity of the platform supports this information seeking, providing a feeling of safety for many young people. However, many participants also reported that this anonymity also contributed to what they described as a sometimes ‘toxic environment’. Respondents also report that Tumblr is most used to ‘communicate with people who are like me’, more so than for Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat, which tend to be centred around existing local networks. This suggests that Tumblr is not only a space of intimate communications, but is a key space for identity practice and formation, where one’s peers are present, despite geographic limitations, including for young people living in regional and rural locations. Participants who grew dissatisfied with their Tumblr communities and experiences speak of leaving this space, but often clarified its importance for them at a particular time of their lives. For many, Tumblr is cast as a beginning for identity-work around diverse genders and sexualities, where users became exposed to a range of queer and gender diverse identity projects, and could access a range of people offering their experienced based knowledge of these. We draw on Cho’s (2015) formulations of Tumblr as a ‘queer ecosystem’, and the notion of ‘queer reverb’, to contextualise our empirical work.

1) The document discusses issues around sexuality in social work research, learning, and practice. It notes that while concepts of equality and diversity are embraced, sexuality continues to be marginalized or excluded.
2) Sexuality remains underfunded and underresearched in social work despite calls to include it more. It is also often overlooked in learning materials and training.
3) Common mistakes include reducing sexuality to sexual behavior, problems, or the needs of minority groups alone. The document calls for moving beyond such approaches.
Sex education provides instruction on issues relating to human sexuality including anatomy, sexual activity, reproduction, safe sex practices, and abstinence. It is considered comprehensive if it covers all these topics. Sex education has traditionally been a controversial issue, with debates around appropriate ages to begin instruction and topics to include. While many see it as important for sexual health and reducing risks like teen pregnancy, others have opposed discussing sexuality in schools.

Sex education has traditionally been a controversial issue, with debates around appropriate ages to begin instruction and topics to include. While many see it as important for sexual health and reducing risks like teen pregnancy, others have opposed discussing sexuality in schools.
Sex education is an important but controversial topic in the Philippines. While introducing comprehensive sex education and contraceptives in schools could help address issues like teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, many conservative groups oppose it due to concerns about promoting premarital sex. Educators argue that youth today face different challenges and need age-appropriate information to make informed decisions. Studies show sex education can help delay sexual activity and promote safe behaviors. While controversial with some Church leaders, adapted Catholic school modules and public school programs indicate support from other educators in providing sexuality education.
Social Media and Free Expression -- Explicit Content -- Kian McIntoshKian McIntosh
This document discusses research on the interaction between social media users and explicit content. It finds that social media is a significant medium for explicit content, especially among younger adults. While the research shows correlations between explicit content and risky sexual behavior, the causal relationships are unclear. Motivations for posting explicit content on social media include seeking attention, empowerment, and as a form of communication. Individuals' perceptions of others' explicit content are usually negative. However, more research is still needed due to limitations in the existing studies.

This presentation outlines the public response to youth sexting as a cultural phenomenon, including its construction as an act of deviance and promotion of abstinence to 'protect' young people. The presentation then outlines young people's perceptions and practices surrounding youth sexting, and explores moving away from abstinence and victim blaming narratives to focus on privacy and consent.
Sex education provides instruction on issues relating to human sexuality including relationships, sexual anatomy, activity, reproduction, consent, health, and rights. It aims to educate using comprehensive approaches covering all relevant topics. Common avenues for sex education are parents, school programs, and public health campaigns. While traditionally considered taboo, sex education was introduced in schools in the late 19th century and has expanded with goals of preventing teen pregnancy and disease. It remains a controversial issue with debate around appropriate topics and delivery methods.

Formulating a Data Presentation Brief

A brief is a way of communicating to clients and stakeholders about the objectives of a business and what the business aims to achieve at the end. Formulating a brief provides information to clients and partners and thus it is important to provide the right information in a proper manner for the best results (Brigham, 2016). An effective data presentation brief utilizes the relationship between the presenter and the clients and ensures that it puts data in a clear and concise manner which is able to draw the attention of the audience and make them comprehend the data (Kirk, 2016). Data presentations may contain large volumes of variable data and using the right method to formulate a brief determines the ease with which the audience is able to understand, visualize the data and create interest in the project.
One of the methods of formulating an effective data presentation brief is through the use of charts. Charts provide an interesting way of presenting data to an audience. Charts have an advantage when presenting a data brief in that they enable presenters to display data in ways that are appealing to the audience (Kirk, 2016). This is because different charts like bar graphs can use different colors that are appealing which help to capture the attention of the audience (Kirk, 2016). In addition, bar graphs are easy to read, interpret and understand at a glance. One of the disadvantage of using charts as a method of presenting data briefs is that focusing on the visual aspects of charts as a way to make them attractive to the audience may end up camouflaging the data being presented which can make the audience to miss the objectives (Brigham, 2016). In addition, presenting complex data on charts may be boring to the audience. Another limitation with the use of charts such as pie charts is that they are limited to the number of variables that they can display and therefore, if the data contains numerous variables, they become inappropriate.
Using a Tedtalk can help in presenting data statistics to an audience. This is normally accompanied by some data slides. This method gives the presenter a golden opportunity to be more convincing to the audience through their display of confidence (Brigham, 2016). The presentation can win over the audience depending on the credibility of the speaker. This method might be a disadvantage if the presenter has poor communication skills and lack of confidence. Talking might also get the audience bored and make them fail to visualize the data.
The method of formulating a data brief presentation is very critical to the success of a presentation in terms of the ease in which the audience is able to visualize and comprehend the data.
Network Structures For A Better Twitter CommunityWeiai Wayne Xu
This document summarizes a presentation about using different network structures on Twitter to create a better online community. It identifies six types of Twitter networks: divided polarized crowds, unified tight crowds, fragmented brand clusters, clustered community clusters, in-hub and spoke broadcast networks, and out-hub and spoke support networks. The presentation aims to demonstrate how these different network structures can be used to build a healthier Twitter environment.
1) The document discusses findings from the Toronto Teen Survey regarding the sexual health of LGBTQ youth and youth questioning their sexuality.
2) It finds that LGBTQ youth have higher pregnancy rates, engage in riskier sex, and have higher substance use than heterosexual youth.
3) It also finds that 50% of questioning youth are newcomers or immigrants to Canada, and that LGBTQ and questioning youth face challenges accessing sexual health services.
Sex education provides instruction on issues relating to human sexuality including relationships, sexual anatomy, activity, reproduction, consent, health, and rights. It aims to give comprehensive and medically accurate information to help adolescents make informed decisions. Evidence shows that comprehensive sex education which includes discussion of contraception can help reduce risky behaviors and unintended pregnancy rates compared to abstinence-only programs. It is considered important by health organizations for promoting sexual health, well-being, communication and informed decision making among youth.
The new Ontario sex education curriculum introduces topics at earlier grade levels and in greater depth than previous curricula. It aims to provide age-appropriate education about topics like consent, puberty, gender identity, online safety, and healthy relationships. However, some oppose these changes as inappropriate for young children or contradictory to religious beliefs. Supporters argue it empowers children and promotes tolerance, but critics argue it undermines the role of parents. Its implementation has led to both positive impacts like empowering children, and negative impacts like controversy that affected some teachers' jobs.
Managing adolescent sexual reproductive health issues cope with best evidence...PPPKAM
The document discusses adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) and strategies for effectively addressing ASRH issues. It describes the physical, emotional, and developmental changes that occur during adolescence and associated health risks. A comprehensive, evidence-based approach is needed that provides adolescents with knowledge and services, creates an enabling environment, and addresses social and cultural norms. Interventions should be tailored to adolescents' diverse needs and involve stakeholders at all levels including adolescents themselves. The goal is to enable adolescents to protect their sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Suicide Prevention and Social Media - presentationSuku Sukunesan
This document proposes using a Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework to address issues of cyberbullying, suicide ideation, and reporting suicide on social media among young Australians. The CoI framework involves cognitive presence, social presence, and teaching presence. The document describes how each element of the CoI framework could be operationalized on social media, including facilitating discussion, sharing experiences, and structured prevention programs. Existing organizations and programs like ReachOut, Bullying.Noway, and Orygen Youth Health are provided as examples that demonstrate elements of an ideal CoI model for suicide prevention on social media. Challenges in enforcing policies across international social media platforms are also discussed.

The document discusses child maltreatment and resilience promotion. It defines child maltreatment according to the WHO as physical, emotional or sexual abuse, neglect or exploitation that harms a child's well-being. The presentation connects child maltreatment to developmental tasks in adolescence and emerging adulthood, and global goals to end violence against children. Research findings on rates of child sexual abuse globally and in different populations are presented, showing impacts on mental health. Promoting resilience in vulnerable youth through community support and mindfulness is discussed.
As part of our discussion, we proposed that social media can be a tool to help social work academics and practitioners to discover and share knowledge as well as build relationships for collaborative work. Social media platforms are well-placed to allow social workers across the professional continuum to engage with each other, creating communities of learning and practice that bridge the gap between practice and research in social work.
Could social networking online help NEET young people gain employment?John Mowbray
This document discusses research into whether social networking online can help young people classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) gain employment. It begins by defining NEET and providing statistics on NEET rates. It then reviews literature on social networks and information diffusion, networking as information seeking behavior, and use of social media tools for networking. The document outlines research questions on offline networking behaviors, how social media supports networking during job searches, and how networking can improve employability. The proposed methodology includes surveys and case studies to explore how NEETs source information through social contacts and use social media for networking during job searches.

2. BACKGROUND
For queer and gender diverse people, the internet can be
used for:
• coming to terms with a sense of self (Hiller et al. 2010;
Taylor et al. 2014; Hanckel & Morris 2014);
• connecting with like-minded others (Russell 2002);
• participating in civic life (Vivienne 2016);
• finding sexual health information (Mustanski, Lyons &
Garcia 2010); and
• dating or hook-ups (Light, Fletcher & Adam 2008; Roth
2014)
Growing body of literature on the ‘risks’ associated with
social media use amongst young people (broadly) in relation
to…
• bullying (Nilan et al. 2015);
• privacy (Marwick & boyd 2014);
• sexting (Albury & Crawford 2012; Albury 2015);
• sharing sexual health information (Byron, Albury &
Evers 2013); and
• predation (boyd & Hatgittai 2013)
3. THE SCROLLING BEYOND BINARIES PROJECT
How do young LGBTIQ+ people in Australia use digital social media?
• For communication?
• For maintaining existing relationships? (Family, friends, romantic and/or sexual
partners, peers, co-workers)
• For creating new relationships? (Friendships, romantic and/or sexual
partnerships, and mentorships)
• For finding out information? (On sexual identity, on sexual health, on local
community, on queer culture)
What forms of social media are young queer people in Australia using to establish a
sense of connection and community, especially in areas outside the major cities?
What is the relationship between young queer people’s social media use and their
health and well-being? (Including mental health and sexual health)
Can a sense of connection or community fostered through the internet help to
mitigate against the effects of homophobia, rejection, isolation and exclusion?
4. APPROACH
• Mixed methods study – two phase project
• Phase One: Survey
• Sample: Young LGBITQ+ Australians, 16-35 years of age
(n=1387)
• Data Collection Period: June – November 2016
• Recruitment: Facebook, Instagram paid advertisements;
targeted approaches to schools in rural Australia via school
networks; targeted approaches to LGBITQ+ health services and
networks (e.g. Twenty10, Working It Out)

1. Social media use–social media platforms, motivations,
connecting with who, time spent using, use over time
2. Community/Sense of belonging
3. Health and well-being–SF-8, sexual health, mental health,
experiences of harassment, etc.

13. CONCLUSIONS/TRAJECTORIES
• Different platforms serve different functions for LGBTIQ+ young
people, and can afford specific cultures and ‘queer ecosystems’
(Cho 2015)
• Platforms for information/culture: Tumblr, subreddits,
YouTube channels = safe digital spaces?
• Local physical communities: Facebook
• So much more to be done…
• Tumblr as queer ecosystem
• Dating and hook-up apps
• Regional/urban
• Past digital media (LiveJournal, MySpace)
• Phase 2: 23 interviews already done, 140+ volunteers

Editor's Notes
Examining this pattern further, we find that there is a significant association between ’hook-up apps’ and self-assessed health. Those who use ‘hook-up apps’ such as Tinder, Her, Grindr, Scruff and Hornet all have lower mean scores on health self-assessment question and thus rate their health as better than those who do not. Why? Unsure. These data here cannot explain the casual factors behind this but we hypothesis and suggest that those who use ’hook-up apps’ have more sex, which in turn leads to better health and well-being or alternatively….something about expressions of identity....
