is the result of continued success in collaboration between local health
care providers and innovative research and biotech companies. The
target industries in this cluster include pharmaceuticals, other biological
products, medical laboratories and biotech research. Geographic
clustering is particularly important for these industries to support
innovation and to connect those conducting clinical trials with health

AND TECHNOLOGY A fundamental catalyst of Arizona’s economy has been entrepreneurship
and small business. Today, entrepreneurs are recognized as important
drivers of economic and social advancement, and new and young
enterprises are seen as vitally important sources of innovation, job
creation and productivity growth.
The National Venture Capital Association reports that Arizona ranked
17th in terms of total venture capital dollars invested ($212 million),
and 24th in terms of number of deals (15) in 2012. In 2011, Kauffman
Foundation’s Index of Entrepreneurial Activity reported that Arizona had
the highest rate of innovators starting new businesses in the U.S. That
year, 520 of every 100,000 Arizonans between the ages of 18 to 64 in
the state created a business, compared to the national average of 320.
In Scottsdale, an increasing number of startup and young enterprises
have been concentrating in the community in recent years.
