Nitrogen Fertilizer experiment on Rice
Research:
Nitrogen fertilizer only supplies one element which is Nitrogen. The addition of nitrogen to the soil
helps in the rapid, healthy growth and protein of the plant. By using nitrogen fertilizer, it also increases
the greenhouse gas in the atmosphere.
Question:
Rice is the stable diet for more than half the population of the world and counting but there are not
enough rice to feed the hungry world so what is needed to make rice grow faster to support the
population of humans.
Hypothesis: Will nitrogen fertilizer really make plants grow faster and healthier?
Materials: 2 Pots
42 seeds (21 each pot)
Tap water
Nitrogen Fertilizer
Fertilizer Solutions
Ruler (to measure)
Potting soil
Procedure
1. Put the Potting soil half way up 2 pots.
2. Mix the soil with Nitrogen Fertilizer
3. Put 21 seeds of rice in to each pot.
4. Each seed should be about 3 centimeters under the top level of soil
5. water it with tap water with the measurement of 250 ml

3. Observation
During the first few days, nothing was happening on both pots. The rice in the control pot came up from
the soil on day six with the measurement of about 0.1 centimeters. The nitrogen fertilizer doesn’t seem
to be effective to the plant because the rice in the test pot didn’t come out of the soil until day 12 with
the measurement of 6 centimeters. At the end of the experiment, the rice without the fertilizer grew
faster and taller than the rice with the nitrogen fertilizer.
Conclusion:
In Conclusion, The rice without the nitrogen fertilizer grows faster than the rice with the nitrogen
fertilizer. Back to the data above on day 12, the rice without fertilizer grows faster than the ones with
the fertilizer and that stays as the same throughout the experiment and after. Due to the large amount
of people around the world that eats rice, using nitrogen fertilizer will not be appropriate to use because
you need to buy the nitrogen fertilizer for an amount of money and also, it increases the amount of
green house gas in the atmosphere.
Reflection:
From this experiment, I learned that not all fertilizer make plants grow faster and healthier. It might be
that I used too much fertilizer. I am still unsure that less amount of nitrogen fertilizer will make the
plant grow faster and healthier, so I am deciding to do a follow up test using less amount of nitrogen
fertilizer.
