Lesson 1.2
Identifying Useful
Materials
Objectives
describe characteristics
of household materials
that are useful; and
classify different
household materials as
useful based on their
properties.
1
At the end
of the
lesson, you
should be
able to:
2
Learn about It!
A material is said to be useful when it served its main purpose
and people benefit from it.
When is a material considered useful?
Learn about It!
• Household products like detergents, bleach, and soap are
often used for cleaning.
• These materials have cleaning properties that could
remove stains and other dirt from clothes and other
materials.
• They contain surfactants that lift the dirt from a material,
which make it easier to wash away.
Examples of Useful Materials
Learn about It!
• A liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is
a mixture of gas in liquid form and is
stored in a metal canister under high
pressure.
• It is a flammable material that could
easily catch fire and burn.
• LPG serves as a fuel for stoves which
are essential for cooking.
Examples of Useful Materials
LPG
Learn about It!
• Pans are used for cooking food.
• The high conductivity of metals
makes it an appropriate material
for creating cooking pans.
• It also has insulated handles,
which prevents the person from
getting hurt when they touched
the hot handles.
Examples of Useful Materials
cooking pans
Learn about It!
• Most houses have windows made
of glass.
• Glass are known to be
transparent, which allows light to
pass through it.
• Its transparency provides natural
lighting inside the house.
Examples of Useful Materials

glass
Key Points
A material is said to be useful when it served its main
purpose and people benefit from it.
1
Some useful materials are cleaning products and tools,
cooking pans, glass, hammer, garden hose, and pillow to
name a few.
2
Check Your Understanding
Look at each illustration and describe the
property that makes it useful.
Challenge Yourself
What other useful materials can you see at home
and school? List them down and give their uses.
