Scenario-Based Activity:
"P2P NETWORK
CHALLENGE"
Following are 10 problem-
based scenarios designed to
assess your critical thinking,
technical understanding, and
collaboration in setting up a
peer-to-peer (P2P) network.
General Instructions to Students
(Group Task):
Work as a group to analyze and
solve each given scenario related to
peer-to-peer networking. Write
your answers clearly on paper, then
prepare to report your findings and
proposed solutions to the class.
All group members must
participate in answering,
discussing, and presenting. Group
leader may assign roles (e.g.,
presenter, explainer, technician,
recorder).
Goal: Demonstrate not only your
technical knowledge, but also
your ability to collaborate and
explain networking concepts
clearly and accurately.
Scenario 1: No Ping Response
Two computers are physically connected
using an Ethernet cable. You assigned
static IPs correctly (PC1: 192.168.1.1, PC2:
192.168.1.2). However, the ping test from
PC1 to PC2 fails.
Question:
List 3 possible causes for this issue and
provide the steps to resolve each.
Scenario 2: Identical Computer Names
During setup, both computers were
renamed to "LAB-PC1". Later, users
reported that shared folders were not
accessible from one computer.
Question:
What is the problem in this setup? Why
is it important to assign unique
computer names in a peer-to-peer
network?
Scenario 3: No Shared Folder Access
You successfully pinged both computers
and used the 192.168.1.1 command.
However, when accessing a shared folder,
a message appears: “Access Denied.”
Question:
Explain what might have gone wrong
with the folder sharing settings and
describe how to set proper permissions.
Scenario 4: Mismatched Workgroup
The computers were named correctly and
can ping each other. However, when
browsing the Network tab in File Explorer,
the other PC is not visible.
Question:
Identify the likely cause of this visibility
issue and explain the importance of a
common workgroup name in a P2P
network.
Scenario 5: Wrong IP Configuration
A student accidentally assigned the
following IPs:
• PC1: 192.168.1.1
• PC2: 192.168.10.2
Question:
Explain why the computers cannot
communicate and what should be
corrected in the IP setup.
Scenario 6: Forgot to Restart
After setting the computer names and
workgroup, the students skipped the
restart step and attempted file sharing
immediately.
Question:
Why is restarting important after these
changes? What can go wrong if it is
skipped?
Scenario 7: Shared Folder is Missing
You’ve shared a folder in PC1 and set
permissions correctly. But on PC2, when
accessing via 192.168.1.1, no folder
appears.
Question:
What additional sharing setting might
be disabled, and how can this be
enabled to make the folder visible?
Scenario 8: Windows Firewall Blocking
Connection
Even after setting IPs, enabling sharing,
and using correct computer names, the
computers cannot access each other via
ipaddress.
Question:
How can the Windows Firewall cause
this issue? What should you check or
configure?
Scenario 9: Using DHCP Instead of
Static IP
Instead of assigning static IPs, the
students left the configuration on "Obtain
IP Automatically" for both PCs.
Sometimes, the connection works, and
sometimes it doesn’t.
Question:
Why is static IP configuration preferred
in a P2P setup? What problems can
Scenario 10: One-Way File Sharing
PC1 can access and copy files from PC2,
but PC2 cannot access anything from PC1,
even though both are in the same
workgroup.
Question:
Give possible reasons why the file
sharing only works in one direction,
and describe how to resolve it.
Group Reporting Instructions
After completing your written answers:
1. Prepare a 3–5 minute presentation of
one assigned scenario (will be assigned by
the teacher).
2. All group members must speak during
the report (e.g., one reads the scenario,
another explains the solution, another
demonstrates or simulates).
Group Reporting Instructions
After completing your written answers:
3. Be ready to answer follow-up
questions from your classmates and
teacher.
4. Use visuals if necessary (diagrams,
screenshots, sample IP tables).
🔹 Scenario 2: Identical Computer Names
During setup, both computers were
renamed to "LAB-PC1". Later, users
reported that shared folders were not
accessible from one computer.

it important to assign unique computer
names in a peer-to-peer network?
