(TCO A) Select any company with which you are familiar. Define its
competitive advantage. What core competencies differentiate it from the
competition? Why?
Part 1
In answering this question and discussing this topic with your other
classmates, think about some of the topics related to competitive strategy
formulation from an undergraduate business policy class that you might
have taken or one strategy course you have recently taken in this
program.
When answering this question with examples, ask yourself this
fundamental question: "what does this organization do differently in
order to seperate itself from the rest of its competition and create a
product or service that is superior to others?"
Part 2
Let's look at the following high performing companies:
- Chic fil-A
- Apple
- Starbucks
- Costco
6. What do these companies do well that separates them from the rest of
their competition? What could an entrepreneur learn from these
companies and their strategies to form within their own small business
venture?
Part 3
Now let's look at the opposite side of competition and look at companies
that do not perform well such as:
- Sears
- Burger King
- Kodak
What are they lacking in their competitiveness and leadership that
continues to have them falter versus their competition. In regards to
innovation and revitalization of their concept, what could the
management in these organizationsdo? What could a small business
manager learn from these mistakes?

(TCO D) Ilene Polansky owns two trendy restaurants in Montreal,
Canada. Since starting her first restaurant, Polansky has been juggling
multiple roles, shortchanging a focus on profitability. Although her
restaurants' net profit margin of 10%-15% is within the industry
average and loyal patrons pack both locations virtually every night,
Polansky continues to experience periodic financial problems. Polansky
counts on what she learned in a 10-week bookkeeping course to manage
her company's finances. Her secretary writes all of the checks, but she
does not track the restaurants' expenses over time. Once a month, the
secretary goes to Polansky's father's accounting firm to use his
computer to input invoices. Polansky is planning to open a third location
within a year, but she knows that she has to get her financial plate in
order first.
Critique the existing financial control system Polansky has in place for
her restaurants. What recommendations can you make for improving
it? Which financial reports would you advise Polansky to prepare? How
should she use them to manage her restaurants?

(TCO H) David is a former drug user who has spent time in jail. For the
past three years, he has not used drugs, and he now operates a forklift at
a small construction company. However, lately, he has begun having
seizures, or flashbacks, as a result of his earlier use of the drug PCP. He
has been carefully evaluated by EAP professionals and was found to be
clean of current drug use; indeed, they say flashbacks of this nature are
quite common in ex-addicts. Mishandling of a forklift can be dangerous
to both David and his coworkers. However, he has already had
flashbacks while at the controls, and in each case, he responded by
releasing a handle that simply stopped the machine. Driving the forklift
is the only work that he is qualified to do within this company, and he
has pleaded to keep his job.
19. How would you handle this situation? What ethical and socially
responsible principles guided you in making your decision?
This section lists options that can be used to view responses.
