RICHES is also holding regional meetings this spring on reproductive health and webinars throughout the year on topics like social media networking and new educational materials. The organization invites agencies serving women and children to join their growing network and take part in upcoming activities and resources to support women's health.

She has worked for 18 years to improve birth outcomes through programs like Adopt-A-Mom, which provides prenatal care to women without insurance. In 2009, North Carolina saw over 1,000 infant deaths, or more than two per day. Purdum started in this role due to her own struggles with infertility and desire to help others have healthy babies. The Coalition's Adopt-A-Mom program has served over 4,000 women and resulted in 90% of infants being born full-term. Purdum is proud of the progress but wants to do more to educate women on their health.

1) Nearly 3 million people in the US experience homelessness each year, including 1.3 million children, and the rates are similarly high in North Carolina according to a 2008 survey. 2) Renee Parks-Bryant of the Durham County Health Department is passionate about helping the homeless population maintain their health. 3) At a resource fair in Durham, Parks-Bryant introduced a Health Journal Tool Kit to over 350 attendees to help disadvantaged individuals track health information and goals.

Sharon Carter teaches nutrition classes through Buncombe County's EFNEP program to help families learn healthy eating habits on a limited budget. She works with groups like those at homeless shelters, drug rehab centers, and a community college career program called ASPIRE. In her six-week cooking courses, Carter teaches participants how to plan meals, cook nutritious and inexpensive dishes, and practice food safety. Through this program and her work with over 90 families per year, Carter sees many improve their nutrition and food safety practices based on pre- and post-testing. As a member of the RICHES network, she hopes to collaborate with other organizations to help more families develop healthier lifestyles.
