Queen Liliuokalani was the last monarch of Hawaii, reigning from 1891 until 1893 when she was deposed by American businessmen and missionaries. As queen, her goal was to protect Hawaii and its native people, but increasing U.S. influence led to Hawaii becoming a U.S. territory in 1898, bringing an end to her rule. She remained an important figure for native Hawaiians after her reign.
